Rohingya boats sink off west Burma - many missing

At least 50 Rohingya Muslims are feared drowned after their boats capsized off western Burma, officials say.

The boats, said to be carrying about 100 passengers, were evacuating people ahead of powerful Cyclone Mahasen.

The vessels sank off Pauktaw township in Rakhine state late on Monday. More than 40 survivors have been found and eight bodies recovered.

Thousands of Rohingya Muslims are living in temporary camps in Rakhine after violence last year.

The UN had called for an urgent evacuation ahead of the storm, warning that many areas where displaced people are now living are in low-lying coastal areas at risk of flooding or tidal surges.

An Islamic perspective on Muslim - Buddhist dialogue

This important need is being increasingly felt today than ever before due to ever increasing violence and bloodshed , ethnic conflict, religious strife and many other challenges that are threatening the stable social order, peace and security.

Dr. M A M Shukri - Director Jamiah Naleemiah-Beruwala

Many conferences are being held in various part of the world in the form of Dialogue between Islam and Christianity and Islam and Judaism. Many Muslim and Christian Organizations on the part western world are playing a significant role in promoting understanding, dialogue and co-existence between Muslims, Christians and Jews, but very little attempts have been made to initiate a dialogue between Islam and other Oriental religions at International level.

The followers of oriental religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism constitute about half of the world population and the oriental religions had played an important role in shaping the spiritual traditions of humanity. The orient has a long history of peaceful co-existence between religions, except for few instances in which there had been frictions and conflicts due to reasons that are more political and economic and less motivated by religious impulses and more over conflicts of this nature are not the norm but exceptions.

STOP ATTACKS ON MUSLIMS – DALAI LAMA TELLS LANKAN MONKS

The Dalai Lama has implored Buddhist monks in Myanmar and Sri Lanka to put an end to a series of recent attacks on Muslims in their countries. He said Buddhists, including monks, were responsible for recent violence against Muslims in Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader spoke Tuesday night about religious violence when asked questions following a speech he delivered to 15,000 people at the University of Maryland. He condemned all killing being carried out in the name of religion and then turned to his own religion.

Myanmar has been wracked by sectarian violence that has displaced tens of thousands over the past year, while Sri Lankan Buddhist groups have recently attacked Muslim businesses, AP reports.

Patriotism, loyalty and allegiance of Muslims to Mother Lanka Part: III

There is no doubt that Muslims have been loyal citizens of Srilanka throughout Srilankan history. They fought with Sinhalese to protect the Island from the onslaught of colonial powers. Dewaraja notes that “when the Portuguese first appeared off the shoes of Srilanka, the Muslims warned the kings, sangha, nobles and the people of the potential threat to the country’s sovereignty. When the Portuguese tried to gain a foothold in Colombo, the Muslims provided firearms, fought side by side with the Sinhalese and even used their influences with South Indian powers to get military assistance to Sinhalese rulers. Through the intervention of the Muslims, the Zamorin of Calicut sent three distinguished Moors of Cochin with forces to help Mayadunne”. P. 50). This illustrates Muslim people’s loyalty to this nation and they defended this land with their lives against any foreign invasions. Muslim people did their best to get all help and support from Muslim world to protect

Islamic culture and the challenge of Buddhist fundamentalism

When I heard about the Boston explosions I had many hopes. First, I hoped that my teacher, who is at Harvard, was safe. Second, I hoped no one was killed. Third, I hoped there was no any Muslim connection to the explosion. Finally, I hoped Boston, one of my favourite American cities, liberal, leftwing, cosmopolitan and intellectually bent, was not disrupted by any fundamentalist attacks, internal or external.

I found out soon enough that my teacher was safe. Sadly, some people died, including an eight-year old boy- someone from my son’s generation. America has its own fundamentalists. When it goes to war, America (Washington) itself is fundamentalist. International terrorism is a real problem and all fundamentalists are party to that terrorism. America’s not-so-democratic acts in the past also keep following like the cart behind the oxen as it has in a Dhammapada verse. In Sri Lanka too we have to be mindful of our collective Karma.

My third hope was much more Sri Lankan than personal. In Sri Lanka, Bodu Bala Sena (‘the army of Buddhist power’) – the newest and crudest version of Sinhala nationalism- is up against Sri Lankan Muslims, claiming that they are invading the social, cultural, economic spheres, pushing aside the Sinhala majority. I do not know the factual position. But the rhetoric seems to suggest something much more dangerous than the facts (even if they are correct) ever could. Some of the BBS (or of the populace attracted to the organization) accusations are really absurd: some Muslim-owned clothing store (a chain of shops in fact) is selling an incredible female underwear that makes Sinhala women barren. The argument is that this shop chain is part of a Muslim conspiracy to reduce the Sinhala population in the country.

Ameen at the inaugural meeting of the Muslim Consultative Meeting, emphasized that while recognizing the need to meet challenges faced by Muslims in Sri Lanka the importance of interacting with all ethnic communities in the country to promote the Sri Lankan identity, while respecting diversity in multi - cultural Sri Lanka.

The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka is an umbrella organization comprising over fifty independent network organizations.
