  • Unethical media practices by Neth FM
COLOMBO, MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS, PEACE AND CONFLICT, POLITICS AND GOVERNANCE, RELIGION AND FAITH Unethical media practices by Neth FM Photo courtesy The Star On June 14th, 2016 the ‘Balumgala’ news programme on Neth FM sought to discuss the construction of a mosque at Sri Maha Vihara Road, Kalubowila, Dehiwela. We reproduce below a letter written by a civil society body with regard to what they call ‘unethical media practices’ by Neth FM. Of particular concern is the failure on the part of the presenters to interview any Muslim member of the congregation or a trustee of the mosque. The Balumgala of June 14th, 2016 is reflective of a general problem of a failure on the part of the Sinhala language print and electronic media to give fair coverage to Muslim related news stories and features.   July 10th, 2016 The Managing...

  • Keeping that Spark Alive
By: Sister S Bemath We enrolled 30 days in a course called Ramadhaan to reach “Taqwah”(Fear of Allah Ta’ala Ta’ala). It was a time of renewal and re-establishment of our commitment to our Beloved ALLAH TA’ALA and HIS beautiful Deen-ul-Islaam. Al-Hamdulillah! Many have graduated with flying colours – embracing them with positive Deeni (Islamic)changes. Now is a crucial time to put it into practice! We fasted, gave charity, read the Qur'aan Kareem and performed the night especially the last ten, standing in prayer before ALLAH TA’ALA. We avoided gossip, slander and every evil that would invalidate our fasting. But now that Ramadhaan has bid us farewell, many of us, regrettably, will put the Qur'aan Kareem back on the shelves, will suspend fasting until next year and will abandon the night prayer. This is not the way it should...

  • Fasting in Shawwal
Keeping the six fasts of Shawwal after keeping the fasts of Ramadaan equals to 360 days of fasting Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansaari Radhiyallahu Anhu mentions that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “Whoever observed the fasts of Ramadhan, then follows them with the fasts of six days in the Month of Shawwal, he will be rewarded as if he fasted for the entire year.”(Muslim) Note: The reward of each good deed is multiplied at least ten times. Therefore, thirty days of fast in Ramadaan equals three hundred days and the six fast of Shawwal equal sixty days. Thus, totalling to three hundred and sixty days, which is the total amount of days in a lunar year. --

  • Attitude leads to Altitude!!!
www.eislam.co.za Ayoob was the kind of person who would always amaze you. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!" He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Ayoob was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day Ayoob was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Ayoob and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?" Ayoob replied, "Each...

  • The parents of the Hafidh will be honored on the Day of Judgment
The Holy Quran is the sacred Word of Allah Most High.  It is a means of reformation for the entire mankind.  Its verses are nothing but guidance and a cure.  Allah Most High revealed the other heavenly books but did not undertake the responsibility of protecting them.  The responsibility to do so was assigned to the scholars of that nation as given in the following verse of Surah Maida: …And the divines and the rabbis because they were assigned to safeguard the Book of Allah….Surah Maaida (5:44) As the Holy Quran was revealed to the last and Final Prophet, Hadhrat Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and its rules and precepts are to remain until the end of time, Allah Most High undertook this responsibility Himself.  Almighty Allah says in the Holy Quran: Verily, We alone have revealed this (the Holy Quran), and...

  • Ramadaan almost over…Now what???
By Umm Ammarah The Month of Ramadaan is coming to an end and the transition from Ramadaan to Eid and thereafter should be a path the that brings us closer to our Creator and a path that treads the Sunnah i.e. The way of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) . After a month of sacrifice, Allah Ta’ala takes it upon Himself to reward His faithful servants. Allah Ta’ala is the Most Generous and Most Benevolent. Indeed Allah Ta’ala’s Generosity multiplies in Ramadaan. When Allah Ta’ala sees His servants carry out all their duties  faithfully and strive to gain closeness to Him through fasting ,salaat (prayer) ,patience, recitation of Quraan ,zikr ,dua ,and controlling of even permissible desires  and needs like food, drink etc. then Allah Ta’ala bestows on His faithful servants a special prize on the night preceding the day...

  • The Prize Giving!
By Abdur Rahmaan Umar “What! Are they crazy?” shouted Fatima, banging the knife on chopping board hard enough to scatter carrots in every direction and send the cat racing for the back door. “What do they think? How can they possibly...” she sighed deeply, and raised the knife for another assault on the chopping board. “Don’t they realise we have so much work to do? I mean who schedules a prize giving for the night before Eid.” “But ma...that’s what Moulana(Sheikh)  said today. That there definitely is a prize giving,” whispered Ahmed, cowering behind a chair in case another barrage of carrots was launched. “Which Moulana? And why don’t they think!” she continued, pausing just long enough to heave another heavy sigh, “We have so much to do the night before Eid. Get the kids clothes ready, prepare the plates,...
