My Journey to Freedom - By Sumayyah JoanMy Journey to Freedom By Sumayyah Joan
It will be three years since I stood before two Muslim sisters and declared openly my belief in God (Allah) and His Messenger, Peace be upon him, and thus freeing and liberating myself from my former self-imposed bondage. Stepping out of the darkness of disbelief into the light of Islam, it’s funny that I found such freedom in the very thing that was keeping me from Islam in the first place - the hijab.
Even though I get the wide gamut of strange stares, points and comments, this covering makes me feel honored, safe and cherished.Backbiting and SlanderBackbiting and Slander '...Allah will defend him in this world and in the next....' And why did you not, when you heard it, say? Lies, suspicion, back biting, slander and gossip are totally alien to Islam. In fact they are considered amongst the most destructive of major sins.

Allah the Most High & Exalted says: “By the Dawn; By the ten nights” [Surah Al-Fajr:1-2]
This oath substantiates the greatness and sacredness of these ten nights in the eyes of Allah. This is an extraordinary oath; it is very reliable and significant and the wise men can understand that by this oath, Allah too attaches great importance and value to the ten nights of Dhul Hijjah.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) has said regarding these blessed days:
“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” The people asked , “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah?” He said, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out, giving himself and his wealth up for the cause (of Allah), and came back with nothing.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]
It is clear then that these 10 days possess tremendous blessings and excellence. Therefore we should spend these 10 blessed days and nights in intensive worship and virtuous acts. Therefore we cannot possibly afford to miss out on such immense rewards otherwise we will definitely be in utter regret in the Hereafter!
The following are recommended acts to do during the blessed 10 days and nights of Dhul Hijjah.
1. Fasting the 9 days of Dhul Hijjah
It is recommended to fast on the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah, especially on the 9th which is the blessed day of Arafah. Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) encouraged us to do righteous deeds in the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah; and indeed fasting is one of the best of deeds. Almighty Allah says, “All the deeds of the son of Adam are for him, except fasting, which is for Me and I shall reward for it.”’ [Sahih Al-Bukhari]
Note: The 10th of Dhul Hijjah is the day of Eid ul Adha and it is prohibited to fast on this day.
Sunday, 13 October 2013 13:53
Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fasting on the day of 'Arafah is an expiation (of sins) for two years, the year preceding it and the year following it. (Reported by Ibn Majah)

Is wudoo for you just a quick wash before prayer? Then it’s time to learn about the amazing benefits of this productivity booster in this life and the next. Let’s find out how you can perform your next wudoo with a deep love insha’Allah!
Allah ‘azza wajal says in this week’s central ayah, which has a tremendous influence on our life multiple times a day: O you who believe! when you prepare for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows, rub your heads (with water) and (wash) your feet to the ankles..(Quran, 5:6)
Here’s a selection of 7 benefits of making wudoo linked to being more productive:
Sins weigh you down. They make your heart feel heavy and press your spiritual productivity. Doing wudoo is an ultimate way for forgiveness so your spiritual productivity increases again! The Prophet salallahu’ alayhi wa sallam said: When a Muslim servant or a believer washes his face (in the course of wudoo) every sin he has committed with his eyes is washed away from his face along with the water, or with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin they wrought is erased from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin towards which his feet walked is washed away with water, or with the last drop of water, with the result that he comes out cleansed of all sins.[Muslim] Action: pay attention to every single step of your wudoo and do not rush or neglect any body part by reminding yourself of this immense reward!
To have a blessed sleep.
Imagine an angel staying very close to you all night long and not only that, imagine that angel begging Allah ‘azza wajal to forgive you! This is what happens when you make wudoo before you go to sleep, what a blessing. You can even sleep in a productive way. The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: Purify these bodies and Allah will purify you. Whenever a slave sleeps in a state of purification, an angel sleeps within his hair and he does not turn over during the night except that he [the angel] says: ‘O Allah, forgive Your slave, for he went to sleep purified. [Tabarani] Action: Next time when you feel tired or sleepy, push yourself by thinking about this hadith!
For anger management.
Anger is one of the true productivity-killers, how many decisions you made in a moment of anger were good for you? Saying things in anger is one of the reasons many friendships and even marriages get damaged, there was a reason the sahaaba would fear their own tongues. Doing wudoo is a very underestimated weapon from the sunnah. The Prophet salallah ‘alayhi wa sallam said: Anger comes from the devil, the devil was created of fire, and fire is extinguished only with water; so when one of you becomes angry, he should perform ablution. [Sunan Abu Dawood] Action: We all know we should, but who of us really makes wudoo when we are angry. At least try it once next time and see the difference!

It's true that - sadly - the modern office environment has become a minefield of distractions! You simply can't shut yourself away from it completely. However, there are a few techniques to help you. Here are some:
1. Be an early riser: If you're able to get to work early, this could be your best time to get quality work done and get ahead of the game before distractions start pouring in and derail you from your work. Of course, you have to be disciplined with yourself and not waste these early hours checking e-mails or surfing the net; make them truly productive hours.
2. Stop ALL *optional* notifications: There are some notifications that you can't turn off (e.g., your office ringing, or your boss calling you!). However, there are a lot of optional notifications that you can turn off, e.g., alerts from your mobile phone, notifications on your desktop computer, etc. Turn these off! They'll reduce the urge for you to stop your work and go check the latest e-mail. Which reminds me...
3. Don't check e-mail ALL the time: The world won't stop if you don't check your e-mails. Trust me. I tried it. Things will move on. So don't be obsessed about checking your latest e-mails every 5 minutes. Check e-mails at certain reasonable intervals (e.g., every hour or 2 hours, etc.).
4. Ask your colleagues/boss for some quiet time: Sometimes simply asking your colleagues/boss to leave you alone a bit to focus on an important piece of work can work. You'll never know till you ask. Make it a regular habit (every morning from 8am - 10am, you'll be working on a particular project and need your colleagues/boss to understand to give you some quiet time to get the work done).
5. Work in Pomodoro sessions: I've spoken about Pomodoro technique before, the technique where you work on a single task for 25 minutes then take 5 minutes break. You can use this at work as well. During those 25 minutes, you can close your door (if you have an office) or put up a sign saying you're busy for 25 minutes, close all notifications, unplug the phone if you have to and simply sit down and get work done.
A lot of times we tend to invite the distractions in our lives without us knowing, then we blame everyone when we're not focused or when we're distracted. It's time that you take ownership of your focus and career and not let the distractions around you stop you from being productive.

We spend a third of our lives at work, and it's amazing how we sometimes forget that what we do or say at work will also be taken into account on the day we stand in front of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala).
The work environment is full of situations that can tempt a person to gossip, lie, backbite, or simply be ill-mannered. Yet we need to keep in mind our role model, Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), who said: "I have only been sent to perfect good manners".
It is hard sometimes to be polite and well-mannered especially in a stressful work environment, and with the social pressure to be like everyone else can make it difficult for you to stand out with your exceptional good manners. But in the end, on the Day of Judgement, when we stand in front of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, our work environment and colleagues won't help us, we'll need to help ourselves.
You might ask what does having manners have to do with being productive at work? The better your manners are at work, the less stressed you'll be, the more likeable you become, the easier it is for you to focus at work and for others to work with you and collaborate on projects together. All these factors and more improve your workplace productivity.
So here are 3 practical tips to boost your manners at the workplace:
Be conscious of your manners. Ask yourself: If the Prophet (Peace be upon him) as here with me today, would he approve of the way I behave and carry myself? Reflect on each day at work and how you handled yourself at different situations.
Be quick to apologize: If you've slipped or made a mistake or said something that was inappropriate (even if you're right), be quick to apologise to the person(s) you've hurt. Even if it's not your fault. Be the first to apologize.
Go the extra mile: Let your manners be exemplary. Be the first to say Salam and Good Morning when you walk in. Ask about people's well-being and about their families and how well they are doing. Write Thank You cards to those who've helped you or supported you. Bring small gifts and share with your colleagues at work. Keep your tongue clean of any evil saying and make it only say what's good and pleasant to hear.
May Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) help us all follow the example of our Prophet (Peace be upon him) and perfect our good manners Insha ALLAH.

Dear Mr. Secretary,
KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT DEFENSE SEMINAR 2013
We note with great dismay, media reports of the references to the Muslim Community in Sri Lanka and to Muslims elsewhere made by you in your address at the Defense Seminar held recently.
As you aware, we the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama, which is the apex body of Muslim theologians in Sri Lanka, have made representations to you and to those placed at the highest levels in Government in regard to the hate campaign against the Muslim community carried on by certain extremist elements. Being patriotic Sri Lankans, in making such representations, we have acted responsibly and with great restraint, being conscious of the fact that there are forces still operating which are hostile to Sri Lanka and that these misguided actions of a few, could be unfairly utilized, to vilify Sri Lanka by such groups. We are grateful that you and the Government have taken action consequent to such representations.

Ministry of Defense and urban development
15/5, Baladaksha Mawatha,
The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka appreciates your kind clarification confirming that you did not in any way insinuate that the Muslim Community in Sri Lanka endorsed the actions of external extremist elements in your speech at the Defense seminar on September 3rd 2013.
The Muslim Community also greatly appreciates your recognition of the unstinted cooperation extended by the Muslim Community and their unwavering loyalty and commitment to peace, prosperity and developments of our motherland.
Please be assured that the Muslims will continue to support and protect the hard won peace and stability in our motherland and will not allow any extremist forces from outside, whether Muslim or otherwise to operate under the cover of the Muslim community.
We further wish to place on record our deep appreciation of your support and assistance during the recent challenges faced by the Muslim Community.
