අළුයම 2.15 ට පමණ යතුරුපැදි හතරකින් පැමිණි කණ්ඩායමක් විසින් එම ගිණි තැබීම සිදු කර ඇතැයි සැලකෙන අතර හෝටලයේ විශාල කොටසක් සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම දැවී විනාශ වී ඇත.

ඒ සමග දේශපාලනඥයන්, නගරයේ ව්‍යාපාරික සංගමය සහ ආගමික නායකයන් එක්ව අද දවස තුළම එම හෝටලය කලින් තිබුණ තත්වයට පත් කර එය විවෘත කරන බව කියා සිටියහ.

ඒ අනුව ආණමඩුවේ 250 කට වැඩි පිරිසක් ස්වේච්ඡාවෙන් හෝටලය ප්‍ර‍තිසංස්කරණය කිරීමට එක්වූහ.

පාර්ලිමේන්තු මන්ත්‍රී,රාජ්‍ය ඇමති පාලිත රංග බණ්ඩාර, ආණමඩුව ප්‍රාදේශීය සභාවට තේරී පත් වූ දේශපාලන පක්ෂවල සභිකයින්, පොලීසිය සහ ආගමික නායකයන් ද මෙම අවස්ථාවට එක්ව සිටියහ.

"රාත්‍රී හතට පෙර අපි මේ ආපන ශාලාව නැවත විවෘත කරනවා. ආනමඩුව නගරයේ තියෙන එකම මුස්ලිම් හෝටලය මෙයයි. අපි හැමදාම සාමයෙන් ජීවත් වූ පිරිසක්," එම මෙහෙයුමට එක්ව සිටි පුද්ගලයෙක් පැවසීය.

ගින්නෙන් ඇති වූ අලාභය ස්ථිර වශයෙන් තක්සේරු කර නොමැති බව හෝටල් හිමිකරු ප්‍රකාශ කළත්, බැලූ බැල්මට රුපියල් ලක්ෂ පනහකට ආසන්න අලාභයක් සිදුව ඇති බවක් එම අලාභය දුටු පුද්ගලයෝ පවසති.

එම ස්ථානයට රැස් වූ සියලු ජන කොටස්වල මැදිහත්වීමෙන් 'ආනමඩුව වෙළෙඳ සංගමය' විසින් එක දිනක් ඇතුළත හෝටලය යථා තත්වයට පත්කරනු ලැබීම බොහෝ දෙනාගේ විශ්මයට හේතු විය.

Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara today requested the public in Kandy Administrative District to come out with necessary particulars and evidence to lodge complaints in the nearest police station whose property had been vandalized recently due to violence incidents.

Although severe damages were occurred to shops and places of religious worships following the recent violence incidents, the damages were not yet estimated. (Thilanka Kanakarathna)

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday warned of a possible repercussion on the employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in Middle- East countries if the racially motivated attacks against certain communities continued.

Addressing a gathering of ministers, parliament members, religious leaders and businessmen of all three communities at the Central Province Governor's office in Kandy, Mr. Jayasuriya stated that leaders of certain countries have been hurt by the violent incidents in the Kandy District.

"A large number of Sri Lankans are working in Middle East countries. If the leaders of those countries after being hurt over a certain community here being threatened, take steps to send back the Sri Lankans, it would affect the country in a big way" the Speaker warned after inspecting the situation in the areas where attacks on Muslim houses, businesses and mosques had taken place last week .

He pointed out that the riots had already taken a heavy toll on the tourism industry while a UN official visited the country to express the concern of the world body. He lamented that the situation tarnished the image of the country seriously.

Denouncing extremism and racism as a threat to all communities, the Speaker observed that no country could progress if these social maladies are condoned. "Countries have perished due to racism and extremism. We must ensure that there won't be a recurrence of the incidents that took place in Ampara and Kandy" he asserted.

Public Administration, Law and Order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara who attributed the spread of the violence to the false and slanderous social media propaganda stated that stern action would be taken against those responsible for the situation that defamed the country's image.

While the Secretary of the Muslim Traders Association A.C.M. Rahuman expressed displeasure over the conduct of the authorities responsible for the security of the area, Maulavi Fasrul Rahman bemoaned his community was hurt by the insults hurled against them. "We are not importing Arab culture here" he said and urged that those responsible for the mayhem be punished while compensation must be paid for the damages. (J.A.L. Colombo Chief Magistrate today ordered to detain the two students who were arrested over social media posts till March 22 at the Youth Detention Centre at Makola.

They were arrested on Friday (9) and Saturday (10) by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Minuwangoda and Homagama.

ආණමඩුව නගරයේ තිබූ ආපන ශලාවකට (11) අද අලුයම කිසියම් පිරිසක් ගිනි තබා විනාශ කිරිමට කම්පා වූ නගරයේ ව්‍යාපරික සංගමය හා ජනතාව එක්ව දිනක් ගතවීමටත් මත්තෙන් අදාල ස්ථානය තිබූ තත්වයට ගෙන ඒමට කටයුතු කර තිබුණි.

ආණමඩුව නගරයේ ව්‍යාපාරිකයින් හා ජනතාව අතර ඉතා හොඳ ලෙන්ගතු කමින් සිටි ව්‍යාපාරිකයකුගේ කඩයකට මෙලෙස ගිනි තබා තිබිණි.


එම ව්‍යාපාරිකයාට සාධාරණයක් ඉටු කරමින් ආණමඩුව නගරයට කළු පැල්ලමක් එක් කිරීමට උත්සහ කළ කඩාකප්පල් කාරින්ට පාඩමක් කියා දෙමින් ගිනි ගෙන විනාශ වූ ආපන ශාලාව යලි සකස් කර දීමට කටයුතු කටයුතු කර තිබුණි.

මෙම ගිනි ගැනීමෙන් අසල තිබූ දුරකථන වෙළෙඳ සැලකටත් බුලත් විට අලෙවි කරුවකුගේ කුඩා පෙට්ටි කීපයකටත් හානි වී තිබුණු අතර ඒවාද යලි පිළිසකර කිරීමට ව්‍යාපාරික සංගමය කටයුතු කළේය.

ගිනි තබා විනාශ කරන ලද ආපන ශාලාවට ආසන්නයෙන් ඇති වෙළඳසලක සවි කර තිබූ ආරක්ෂිත කැමරා පද්ධතියක දර්ශන උපයෝගී කරගෙන  විමර්ශන සිදු කිරීමෙන් පසු සැකරුවන් අත්අඩංගුවට ගැනීමට පොලීසියට හැකි විය.

The religious and communal violence that erupted in Kandy could end up stymying the momentum built up in the tourism industry over the past three months, as signs are emerging that foreign tourists are cancelling their visits to Sri Lanka.

Over 80 tourists have cancelled their bookings made at one of the top three travel companies in Sri Lanka, which could possibly amount to a loss of 800 nights, Mirror Business learns.

This is despite the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) constantly issuing updates on the situation, and working with tourism stakeholders and the police to ensure the safety of tourists in the Central district.

Attempts to reach the top management of most of the leading travel companies and the two apex industry bodies—Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) and The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) were unsuccessful, as most were in attendance at ITB Berlin, the largest travel trade show in the world.

Back home, SLTDA Chairman Kavan Ratnayake hit back strongly against individuals and groups inciting religious and ethnic tension.

“This is a wakeup call that shows the significance and the gravity of immature action on the part of those who contributed to this situation. The next time before someone throws a stone, or engages in any kind of road-rage, they should think ten times of the wide-ranging economic consequences of their actions,” he said.

Ratnayake said that the tourism industry is projected to be the leading foreign exchange earner for Sri Lanka in two years, and the society should understand the importance of preserving a peaceful environment to sustain the growth of the industry.

“The loss of income affects not only the major hotels, but also the street seller, the tuk-tuk driver, the farmer and the restaurant worker,” he added.

The tourism industry was just getting back into gear after 2017 turned out to be a disappointment with a partial airport closure and a dengue epidemic, which resulted in nearly flat growth.

Relatively moderate growth last December was followed up by double-digit growth in January and February this year from key markets due to the winter season and the Chinese New Year, before the current tension in the major tourism hub of Kandy spurted.

Sparks flew with a roadside brawl over a truck driver thwarting a three-wheeler from overtaking, which resulted in the latter assaulting the truck driver who passed away from the wounds sustained.

The incident escalated into communal violence, with residents of the area fanning flames of religious hatred over the fact that the truck driver was Buddhist and the assailants were Muslim.

Another death of a Muslim resulted in the ensuing chaos.

Foreign media provided wide coverage on the developments, and the US, British, UAE and Australian governments issued travel advisories for their residents visiting Sri Lanka.

However, the national carrier SriLankan Airlines, which flies most of the tourists to Sri Lanka, issued a statement, which said that it has yet to see a massive cancellation trend.

“There could be some cancellations. We are closely monitoring the situation, but so far we are unaffected,” SriLankan said.

A source within the airline yesterday said that it would take a day or two before the airline could state whether cancellations have substantially increased due to the situation.

The unrest would not only result in cancellations by tourists who were set to visit Sri Lanka shortly, but would also discourage potential bookings for the coming months. (Chandeepa Wettasinghe)
