Following the election of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Dinesh Gunawardena said both "Rauff Hakeem and Rishad Bathiudeen will not be part of the new government." This was repeated by both Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila.

The Muslim community is not concerned whether the government gives Rauf Hakeem and Rishard Badurdeen ministerial portfolios or not. What the Muslims need is for the new government to understand their plight, stop violence against them, and attend to their grievances.

Time was when the Sri Lankan Muslim community was not interested in forming a separate party. As everyone knows, the Muslims were part and parcel of the two major national...

Rising Hindutva fascism against minorities under Modi
Bound to  divide communities and destabilise India

By Latheef Farook

Ever since  Narendra Modi waselectedPrime Minister two years ago theRSS,Rastriya Swayam Sevak, began implementing its fascist Hindutva agenda against Muslims, so called low caste Hindus called Dalits and Christians.

Under the guise of protecting cows, RSS thugs calling  themselves” Cow Vigilante”have unleashed medieval style barbarityonMuslims ,cruelty towards  Dalits and death for  Hindus converting to other religions.

Theseracist thugs haveModi governmentpatronage and police protection.

In the latest of these attacks on Muslims, RSS gangs beaten up, kicked and punched   two Muslim women last week on suspicion of carrying beef. This happened while the two women were  in detention at Mandsaur railway station in central Indiain the presence of large crowd  as policemen watched. The meat the women were carrying has since turned out to be buffalo.

In June 2016 a Muslim animal trader and his helpers were nearly lynched  when they were strippednaked, mercilessly beaten and their bones smashed and crushed in the presence of police.  Earlier  four other Muslimswere killed on suspicion of eating beef or smuggling cows across the country.

A video showedtwo battered Muslim men being forced to eat cow dung. The Indian Express reported: “The video shows the so called  Cow Protection Group forcing two men to eat a mixture of cow dung, cow urine, milk, curd and ghee near Delhi. Dharmendra Yadav, president of the Gurgaon Gau Rakshak Dal admitted that they had forced the two men – Rizwan and Mukhtiar – to eat cow dung concoction on 10 June 2016.

Another video showed two young poverty stricken Muslim boys were severely thrashed to say “Sri Ram is My God”.There was also anothervideo showing four half-naked men tied to a car as the activists took turns to thrash them with belts and batons at a crowded marketplace. At least three Muslims suspected of eating or transporting beef were killed.

They also unleashed violence against Dalits- regarded as low caste Hindus.Hundreds of protesters took to streets in theIndian state of Gujarat in July 2016 after an attack on low-caste villagerswho were taking a dead cow to be skinned. In violent clashes a police officer was killed and several others were injured.

Two Dalit women in their twenties were stripped naked and severely beaten by so called high caste men, women and children while some shouting” kill them, kill them”.

Shankar, a Dalit, who married Kausalya, a high-caste Hindu, was hacked to death by hired killers in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday March 13, 2016.

On 28 April this year a 29-year-old Dalit law student, Jisha was brutally raped, attacked andslaughteredin Kerala. The barbarity was such that the Post mortem reports showed deep wounds on her body; her private parts were pierced by a rod, the large intestine ripped out and face shattered by a hammer blow. She was also beaten with an iron rod from the back of her head, and that her nose was broken. .

The dastardly crimereminded of the December 2012 attack on a paramedical student in Delhi, which shook the nation.

One of the worst attacks on Christians was the rape of a 70 year old Nun in West Bengal in  a convent school that sent shockwaves throughout India and the world. In response, Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, president of the Catholic bishops conference, said the country should work to "protect not just cows, but human beings also."

In the midst of this mayhem Shiv Sena, another RSS deceptive front, called to declare India a Hindu State. This was followed by a BJP member of parliament whocalled for the death sentence for anyone who converts a Hindu to another religion.  He said a law will be passed in Parliament in which anyone indulging in cow slaughter and conversion will be punished with the death sentence."

However evenbefore the law is prepared  it appears that RSSthugs started murdering Hindus converting to other religions.

For examplea24-year-old IT professional,Swathi   was brutally murdered in broad daylight on June 24, 2016at Nungambakkam Railway station   in Tamilnad .

According to Indian Express, Swathi died of horrific injuries after the murderer used a sickle to attack causing multiple blows to her face and neck before she collapsed onto the railway platform, in a pool of blood.

Though a person called Ram Kumar was accused of the murder reports  emerged later  stating that Swathiwas massacred by suspected RSS cadres  as she lovedand married   a Muslim, Bilal Malik in Bangalore, embraced Islam and observed fasting during the Holy Month of Ramadhan. This massacre was reported to have been committed with the cooperation of police which later found to have cut the throat of Ram Kumar who was earlier accused of killing Swathi.

India’s Constitution has the provisions for safeguarding the rights of minorities, but Prime Minister Modi and his government and BJP had shown utter disregard to it and has been committing atrocities on minorities with impunity.  The Indian state has failed appallingly in its obligations to Muslim citizens.

Modi is no  man of peace. His hatred towards Islam and Muslims remain inherent and well known.  His role in the massacre ofMuslims in Gujarat in February 2002 made many countries, including United States and Europe, to refuse him entry visa though  they, including gullible Gulf tribal sheikhs, now roll red carpet to receive him.

Under the circumstance India doesn’t need enemies to destabilise that great ancient country where civilisations flourished.RSS with its fascist ideology and its deceptive fronts such as BJP,Shiv Sena, VHP, Bajrang Dal and the like are doing that job.

Summing up the unfolding mayhem in India, Dubai based columnist.¬ Aijaz Zaka Syed had this to state;

Since the change of guard in India two years ago, stray animals loitering on the streets are more secure and protected than humans.

No wonder the guardians of the holy cow get bolder  by the day. And why wouldn’t they? They are made  to believe that they enjoy political patronage at the highest level in the land and can get away with murder. And they do.

There is a desperate need for Dalits, Muslims and all right thinking people who believe in the idea of an inclusive India to join forces against the growing threat of fascism.

The Muslims in particular must get out of their comfort zone to reach out to Dalits and other marginalised groups and communities. They cannot tackle the coming threat on their own. The very future of India as a secular and pluralist democracy is at stake. We need to stand together to fight the darkness that is fast closing in. We are in this together.

Simple Steps to a Healthier, Happier You!

Latest

By Umm Ayman

Complete health should be a balanced and holistic endeavour. Below are just a few concise steps toward achieving full physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social and even financial well-being and contentment, Inshaa-Allah.

1. ALWAYS SAY BISMILLAH (I BEGIN IN THE NAME OF ALLAH)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught us:

‘Every deed that does not begin with BISMILLAH - In the name of Allah,  is incomplete, (devoid of blessings)’.

Hence, with yaqeen (conviction), whatever you decide to do or consume, will be blessed, and no harm will come to you if it is not Allah’s decree. Yet to aid in this conviction you must most certainly make use of your‘aql (intelligence) and use what has been prescribed.

2. MAKE GOOD INFORMED CHOICES.

That’s right. Ask the well-informed and experienced, read a book, do research etc. Keep an open mind, cross reference and always, always verify – until you are satisfied that you have done your best. The rest is in Allah’s hands.Thus does Allah (SWT) advise us;

‘Then ask those who do know; if you, indeed, do not.’ (Qur’an Surah An-Nahl, Verse 43)

3.            EAT WHOLESOME FOODS.

Drink more water and eat more fruits and vegetables.  Avoid grease, salt and sugars.  Consume less refined, mass produced hazards and opt more for fresh, natural homemade goodness.  Eat moderately. Read the labels. Know what’s going into your body. Above all, enjoy what Allah has bestowed on you.

‘Eat of the wholesome foods we have provided you and give thanks to Allah.’ (Qur’an :Surah Al Baqara, Verse 172)

4.            EXERCISE YOUR MIND.

Don’t get stuck in a rut, don’t be idle, and don’t overload your brain with irrelevant nonsense. Don’t become complacent and satisfied that you know enough. The brain, like any muscle, atrophies with disuse. So utilize that grey matter. Learn something new. Challenge yourself. Besides, it’s quite true: an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) instructs us: ‘Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every male and female Muslim’ (Hadith Ibn Majah & Bayhaqi)

And in quite a few instances in the Holy Quran, Allah (SWT) admonishes us: Why then do you not make use of your intellect?’ (Qur’an -Surah Al-Anbiya, Verse 67)

5.            GET SOME SUNSHINE AND FRESH AIR.

Breathe deeply and get some exercise. Appreciate Allah’s creation. Simultaneously revel in the miracle that is your own body, as well as the majesty of nature, by getting out there and getting a move on it! Physical exercise is an essential part of achieving good health.

Our esteemed Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has admonished:

‘Your body has a right over you.’ (Hadith-Bukhari)

6.            FIND COMFORT AND PLEASURE IN WORSHIP.

Increase such deeds that bring you closer to Allah and those actions too that declare your love for The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).Says Allah (SWT):

‘Behold, by the remembrance of Allah shall you achieve contentment of heart.’ (Qur’an-Surah Ar-Ra'd, Verse 28)

With proper application, Salah (prayer) is that connecting line between Creator and creation. Performance of Salah, as it is required of us, and turning towards it in times of both thankfulness and need, is what adds lustre and essence to our lives.  Inculcating the Sunnah(practices) of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) too, adds dimension to our lives. Our actions and interactions then have better value.

7.            JOIN FAMILY TIES AND KEEP GOOD COMPANY.

Strengthen bonds with relatives, mend ties with loved ones and cultivate such relationships that will bring about righteousness. Enjoy lively conversations, create and uphold good customs and play with your children and each other. It’s a Sunnah!

Many, many ahadith enumerate the virtues of joining ties of family and friendship.  Among the dos and don’ts, one stands out; says The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him):

‘And be, oh slaves of Allah, as brethren.’(Hadith –Muslim)

8.            GIVE A LITTLE OF YOURSELF.

Share your time, money, skills or knowledge. Every little bit makes a difference, and no one benefits more than you.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

Smiling at your brother is a charity, enjoining good and prohibiting evil is a charity, giving directions to a lost person is a charity, removing harmful objects, thorns or bones from the roadway is a charity, and emptying from your bucket into your brother’s (to spare him the effort of filling his own) is also counted as an act of charity for you’.(Hadith Tirmidhi)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is also reported to have said:

‘Giving charity does not, in any way, decrease your wealth’. (Hadith-Muslim)

In fact, it increases the barakah (blessings) in one’s wealth, if Allah wills, as well as earning you multiple rewards. Giving sadaqah (charity) is a means of purifying one’s wealth and self.

9.            BE YOUR VERY BEST. AFTER ALL, ALL YOU CAN DO IS TRY!

We all have good days. We most certainly have bad days too. We make mistakes, we get hurt.   We feel disappointment in ourselves or anger toward others. Things break, people pass away.

Accept that this too comes from Allah, and this too shall pass. Accept that you’re human. Accept the pain, grief, anger or disappointment. Feel it, absorb it. Then take a breath and put your best foot forward. Life goes on, you can overcome. Your weaknesses are what make you human. Your humanity is your strength.Says Allah:

Allah wants to make things lighter for you, and mankind has been created weak.’(Qur’an Surah An-Nisa, Verse 28)

Yet when the angels, in bewilderment, asked Allah why he would place a being as flawed as man on earth, Allah answered: ‘Truly I know what you know not.’ (Qur’an Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 30)

It is because, despite our shortcomings, we constantly strive to overcome and excel.

10. REFLECT AND GIVE THANKS.

Take stock of yourself. Not only will it give you a clearer perspective and better ideas on how to proceed, it will also bring the realization of how fortunate indeed you are. Even if your circumstance seems so dire at this moment, give thanks that you are among a tiny percentage of the world’s population who has received education, enabling you to read this.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

‘The best form of dua is to say ALHAMDULILLAH (All praise is due to Allah)’.(Hadith)

Surely, giving sincere praise and thanks to a benefactor can only increase their benevolence upon you.

11. BE SINCERE.

Be true to Allah. Be true to people. Only then can you, in fact, be true to yourself. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has taught us:

‘Actions are judged by its intentions, and every man will have but what he intended.’ (Hadith Bukhari & Muslim)

12.         BE CLEAN.

Pay attention to your physical hygiene. Keep your environment clean. Use soap and water or a broom.

Purify your mind and soul. Make istigfaar (seek forgiveness and increase thikrullah-remembrance of Allah).

‘Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him inrepentance and loves those who purify themselves (through bathing, cleaning, and washing).’ (Qura’n Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 222)

‘Cleanliness is half of faith.’ (Hadith Muslim)

13. TAKE REST.

Adequate sleep is necessary for optimum performance. Relieve yourself from stress. Relax with your loved ones among the soothing natural bounties all around.

It has been reported that The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to make it a habit to take the afternoon for rest and relaxation, often at the homes of family or friends.

‘And We have made for you, your sleep as a means of rest.’ (Qur’an Surah An-Naba’a, Verse 9)

Thus truly, rest is among Allah’s gifts to us.

A lot of what has been mentioned above is perhaps well-known or common sense, yet indeed, ‘a reminder is beneficial to the believers’ (Qur’an Surah Adh-Dhariyaat, Verse 55)

And Allah knows best…!

Udhiya (Qurbani)

Udhiya (Qurbani)

By E-Islam Team

What is Udhiya?

‘Udhiya’ is an Arabic word meaning "blood sacrifice", and ‘Qurbani’ is an Urdu and Persian word derived from the Arabic word "Qurban" which literally means an act performed to seek Allah Ta’ala’s pleasure. It is technically used for the sacrifice of an animal slaughtered for the sake of Allah Ta’ala.

The sacrifice of an animal has always been a recognised form of worship in many religions, but in the ‘Shariah’ (Islamic sacred law) of The Last and Final Messenger of Allah Ta’ala (Peace be upon him), the sacrifice of an animal has been recognised as a form of ibadah (worship) during the three days of the month Zul Hijjah, namely the 10th, 11th, and 12th .

This is to commemorate the unparalleled sacrifice offered by the Prophet Sayyidna Ibrahim, Alayhi Salam, when he, in pursuance to a command of Allah Ta’ala conveyed to him in a dream, prepared himself to slaughter his beloved son, Sayyidna Isma'il, Alayhi Salam, and actually intended to do so, but Allah Ta’ala the Almighty, after testing his submission, sent down a sheep and saved his son from the logical fate of slaughter. It is from that incident that the sacrifice of an animal became an obligatory duty to be performed b y every Muslim who has the means to do it.

On who is it obligatory?

Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) on every Muslim who is

  • Of sound mind - mature (has reached the age of puberty),
  • Muqeem (i.e. he is not a Shari traveller)
  • Possesses the amount of 612,36 grams of silver or wealth equivalent to that value which is in excess of one's basic needs and debts on any of the three days of Qurbani. It is not necessary that this amount be in one's possession for a complete lunar year. (please do consult your local Islamic Scholars for more details and exact value in your local currency)

What the Quran and Ahadith says:

Allah Ta’ala Ta'ala, The Most Wise says:

"It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allâh, it is your piety that reaches Him. Indeed He has subjected them (animals) to you so that you may glorify Allah for guiding you, and give glad tidings to those who excel in good." (Quran-22:37)

The Noble Messenger of Allah Ta’ala(Peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

"For every hair that is on the sacrificial animal, one reward is recorded for the person making the Qurbâni."

"There is nothing dearer to Allâh during the days of Qurbâni than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Qiyamah with its horns, hair and hooves (to be weighed in reward). The sacrifice is accepted by Allâh before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart."

"Whoever has the capacity to sacrifice and does not do so, should not come to the place where the Eid prayer is offered." (Hadith-Ibn Majah).

Therefore if you have the means to do Qurbani, do not ignore this important part of Deen (religion). There are many more details that relate to Qurbani which we have not covered in this brief article.

Unethical media practices by Neth FM

On June 14th, 2016 the ‘Balumgala’ news programme on Neth FM sought to discuss the construction of a mosque at Sri Maha Vihara Road, Kalubowila, Dehiwela. We reproduce below a letter written by a civil society body with regard to what they call ‘unethical media practices’ by Neth FM. Of particular concern is the failure on the part of the presenters to interview any Muslim member of the congregation or a trustee of the mosque.

The Balumgala of June 14th, 2016 is reflective of a general problem of a failure on the part of the Sinhala language print and electronic media to give fair coverage to Muslim related news stories and features.

The Managing Director/CEO

Asset Radio Broadcasting (Pvt) Ltd

105/3, 5th Lane, Colombo 3

Dear Sir/Madam,

Unethical media practices by Neth FM

I am the President of the Advocacy and Reconciliation Council [ARC] which is an unincorporated association of Sri Lankans who have come together to work towards a united Sri Lanka where all citizens enjoy equality.

We at ARC write to raise our concerns with regard to unethical and dangerous media practices adopted by Neth FM in its ‘Balumgala’ programme broadcast on June 14th, 2016.

The said programme sought to discuss issues pertaining to the construction work taking place at the mosque at Sri Maha Vihara Road, Kalubowila, Dehiwela.

The presenters who presented the programme made several false assertions. They claimed that the mosque was an  ‘anthawadi Muslim palliyak‘ which was being constructed by ‘anthawadi pirisak’ and that the mosque was an ‘anthawadi anawasara idikireemak’ and that it was part of a ‘kumanthranayak’. We waited to hear your presenters back these broad statements with supporting material but no such material was produced.

This is not surprising as the assertions were entirely false. Accordingly to have made such allegations that the mosque was being built by ‘extremists’ who were part of a ‘consipiracy’ was unethical, irresponsible and dangerous.

The broadcasters also claimed that the construction was being done by ‘pitin aaup anthawadi kattiyak’ – which is also entirely false and which also they failed to substantiate.

The programme was biased, one sided and was clearly targeted at creating fear amongst its listeners against Muslims.  It was not a programme but propaganda. The bias of the broadcasters was evident in that despite making such serious allegations they failed to interview a single Muslim member of the congregation or a member of the board of trustees of the said mosque.

This failure to allow the Muslim side of the story to go on air confirms that the presenters had no intention of looking at the issue objectively but were furthering a plan to forment fear, hatred and anger against Muslims.  It is indeed disappointing that radio presenters have fallen to such low levels.

We expect radio channels to act to bring communities together. However Neth FM is doing its best to rip communities apart and damage social cohesion in Sri Lanka.

If the presenters have any material that the mosque and those involved in the construction of the mosque are a threat to public security in Sri Lanka – as good citizens which they claim to be they have a duty to bring it to the attention of the law enforcement authorities. They have not done so. This is because in fact there is no such material and the presenters are acting on pseudo – public interest and pretend to be patriotic just to further the political interests of their masters. The fact that the presenters have sold their independence and intelligence to political agenda – which was evident throughout the programme – is pathetic.

We do not need to remind you that radio stations broadcast on a special privilege conferred on them by the State. The radio frequencies are public property and are held in trust by the licensees and should only be used for the benefit of society. Neth FM has failed to discharge this duty.

Finally we write to also inform you that the construction work of the afore stated mosque at Sri Maha Vihara Road is complete and the Sinhalese, Muslim and Tamil residents of Kalubowila are going about their business peacefully.

Yours faithfully,

Aslam Othman

Keeping that Spark Alive

We enrolled 30 days in a course called Ramadhaan to reach “Taqwah”(Fear of Allah Ta’ala Ta’ala). It was a time of renewal and re-establishment of our commitment to our Beloved ALLAH TA’ALA and HIS beautiful Deen-ul-Islaam. Al-Hamdulillah! Many have graduated with flying colours – embracing them with positive Deeni (Islamic)changes. Now is a crucial time to put it into practice!

We fasted, gave charity, read the Qur'aan Kareem and performed the night especially the last ten, standing in prayer before ALLAH TA’ALA. We avoided gossip, slander and every evil that would invalidate our fasting. But now that Ramadhaan has bid us farewell, many of us, regrettably, will put the Qur'aan Kareem back on the shelves, will suspend fasting until next year and will abandon the night prayer. This is not the way it should be, because all of these acts of worship carry rewards and are of benefit to us throughout the year, in addition to the fact there is no divine prescription limiting them to Ramadhaan.

What is it that happens in Ramadhaan to make you so motivated to change your life around and how can you get that spirit back to make long lasting, sustainable changes in your life? What is it that ALLAH TA’ALA  puts into your life to enable you to make all those changes in Ramadhaan? If we could examine that, maybe we’ll find clues to work out how we can make the Ramadhaan spirit last for more than 30 days, so you can make major sustainable changes in your life!

In Ramadhaan, it’s not only our bodies that are cleansed through fasting, our spirituality is also improved through increased Salaah and reading of the Qur’aan Kareem. Our finances are cleansed through Zakaah, our social relationships are improved through coming together for Iftaar, and our social contribution is increased through extra Sadaqah. The Ramadhaan spirit is developed through a balanced increase in every area of life, with each aspect having its own timing, amount, and purpose.

A whole new beautiful chapter in your life has opened – of peace, happiness, blessings and mercy with an elated feeling of spirituality, connecting with ALLAH TA’ALA and being immersed in HIS love, Subhaan-ALLAH. Fear ALLAH TA’ALA as HE should be feared for, the fear of ALLAH TA’ALA is the best treasure for you. Obey ALLAH TA’ALA and keep away from HIS restrictions, you will achieve HIS pleasure and be saved from HIS torment. On tasting the sweetness that comes with obedience, there is no desire to return to any form of disobedience.

A sinful desire is like a rose from afar, we get allured by its fragrance, become blinded by its beauty, and overlook the thorns.

Don't allow Shaitaan to be an anchor and halt your spiritual journey. Raise the sails of Imaan to reach the beautiful shores of Jannah. Would you rather invest for short term returns, or would it be more sensible to invest for everlasting returns? Don't let the chains of desire (naffs & shaitaan), bind us to Dunya whilst restraining our soul from pursuing Jannah. May ALLAH TA’ALA make our hearts the throne upon where our Imaan (faith) will sit, and let it rule over our Naffs (desires) before it tries to enslave us...

WAYS TO MAINTAIN THE GOOD HABITS YOU PICKED DURING RAMADHAAN:

Make Du'a

It was ALLAH TA’ALA who gave you the ability to keep the good habit in Ramadhaan, and only HE can help you maintain it afterwards. Make Du'a that ALLAH TA’ALA helps you not only keep the habit, but that HE accepts it and makes it a way for you to grow in closeness to HIM.

Make it a Habit

If you want to keep good habits, you’ve got to make sure they remain part of your daily schedule. For instance, fasting. Our beloved Messenger (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam) encouraged fasting on Mondays and Thursdays? He said: “A man’s deeds are reported (to ALLAH TA’ALA) on Mondays and Thursdays and I prefer that I should be fasting when my deeds are reported.” (Hadith-Tirmidhi)

Evaluate yourself Weekly

This helps you see the bigger picture. You’ll be able to evaluate on a more long-term level how well you’ve been keeping your habit in practice. You can do the same thing on a monthly and yearly basis.

Don’t fall apart once you make one Mistake

The beauty of Taubah (repentance) in Islaam, is that ALLAH TA’ALA blesses us with this opportunity to return back to HIM after doing something wrong. We should remember that we are humans and that we will err. Only ALLAH TA’ALA is Perfect.

Ask yourself WHY you kept the habit

Niyyah or intention is a key to ALLAH TA’ALA'S acceptance of our good deeds. If we developed a habit to impress others, for instance, we may be able to keep the momentum for a while, but most probably it’ll wear out afterwards.

But if we maintained a habit sincerely for the sake of ALLAH TA’ALA, Inshaa-ALLAH , not only will we be rewarded for it, but our intention will help us maintain the necessary motivation to continue to do good.

Work your Way up slowly

Aa'ishah (RadhiAllah Ta’alau Anha) reported that Rasulullah (peace be upon him) said: “Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and remember that you shall enter Paradise only through ALLAH TA’ALA'S Mercy, and also remember that the most beloved deed to ALLAH TA’ALA is that which is regular and constant even if it is little.” (Hadith-Al-Bukhari)

The wisdom in this Hadith is tremendous and it is one way of keeping up good habits you have picked up in Ramadhaan.

For example, let’s say you were motivated to read Qur'aan Kareem for half-an-hour on a daily basis in Ramadhaan. But now that it’s over, you feel sluggish, lazy and want to give it up. Yet, you had wanted to maintain this habit after the blessed month was over.

Instead of trying to read Qur'aan Kareem for the same amount of time, reduce the time period to as much as you are initially able to do, even if it’s just ten or twenty minutes a day.

If you keep up this ‘ten minutes a day’ habit, Inshaa-ALLAH TA’ALA, you will see the amount of Qur'aan Kareem you read will increase slowly but gradually, perhaps even surpassing your Ramadhaan maximum in the long-term, Inshaa-ALLAH !

Be steadfast and upright upon the Deen of ALLAH TA’ALA at all times, for you do not know when you’ll meet the Angel of Death. Beware of him taking you while you are in a state of heedlessness. Forgiveness is always billowing around us, but we must raise the sails of remorse and repentance, to feel it.

Now is the time to reprogram your life, rise up and get rid of the negativities, develop your potential, plan and execute, change and get changed, and you will become one of those gain happiness and blessings in this life and enjoy the bliss of the Hereafter, Inshaa-ALLAH TA’ALA! Be sure that reform is possible, seek help from our loving ALLAH TA’ALA, and do not feel unmotivated or lacking in strength.

May ALLAH TA’ALA accept our fasting, our Ibaadah and  other righteous actions, that our condition after Ramadhaan be a better one, the state of our Ummah improves and that we are granted honour and submit to HIS obedience. ..Aameen

“Each day in which no act of disobedience to ALLAH TA’ALA is committed is Eid and each day a believer spent in acts of obedience to his Lord is Eid.”

Fasting in Shawwal

Latest

Keeping the six fasts of Shawwal after keeping the fasts of Ramadaan equals to 360 days of fasting
Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansaari Radhiyallahu Anhu mentions that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “Whoever observed the fasts of Ramadhan, then follows them with the fasts of six days in the Month of Shawwal, he will be rewarded as if he fasted for the entire year.”(Muslim)
Note: The reward of each good deed is multiplied at least ten times. Therefore, thirty days of fast in Ramadaan equals three hundred days and the six fast of Shawwal equal sixty days. Thus, totalling to three hundred and sixty days, which is the total amount of days in a lunar year.

Attitude leads to Altitude!!!

Latest

www.eislam.co.za

Ayoob was the kind of person who would always amaze you. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "If I were any better, I would be twins!"

He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Ayoob was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day Ayoob was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Ayoob and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?"

Ayoob replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ' Ayoob, Allah Ta’ala has given you two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.' I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life."

"Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested.

"Yes, it is," Ayoob said. "Life is all about choices Allah has given us. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people will affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: Allah has given you an option how you live your life!"

I reflected on what Ayoob said. Soon thereafter, I left the restaurant industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life before reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that Ayoob did something you are never supposed to do in a restaurant business: he left the back door open one morning and was held up at gunpoint by three armed robbers. While trying to open the safe, his hand, shaking from nervousness, slipped off the combination. The robbers panicked and shot him. Alhamdulillah , Ayoob was found relatively quickly and rushed to the local hospital’s trauma centre.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Ayoob was released from the hospital with fragments of the bullets still in his body.

I saw Ayoob about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied, "Alhamdulillah , Allah is so Great and so Merciful” and then he added “If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?"

I declined to see his wounds, but did ask him what had gone through his mind as the robbery took place. "The first thing that went through my mind was that I should have locked the back door," Ayoob replied. "Then, as I lay on the floor, I remembered that Allah had given me two choices: I could choose to live, or I could choose to die. I chose to live. By the Will and Acceptance of Allah I choose to live and Allah accepted my dua"

"Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked.

Ayoob continued, "The paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the emergency room and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read, 'He's a dead man.'

"I knew I needed to take action."

"What did you do?" I asked.

"Well, there was a big, burly nurse shouting questions at me," said Ayoob. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. 'Yes,' I replied. The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Bullets!' Over their laughter, I told them. 'I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead."

Ayoob lived, thanks to Allah who made available skilled doctors at this critical moment and also because of his amazing attitude that Allah had given him. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.

Attitude is like a price tag, it shows how valuable you are! The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said;“The best of people in Islam are those who have the best attitude (towards others).” (Hadith At-Tabaraani).

We may not be feeling happy or at ease at the moment, however we can still show a smile on our face or share a few friendly words and kind gestures. Often times, it is simply our attitudes that can influence someone to do good or inspire someone to seek the beauty of Islam.

It only takes a second to affect a person in a bad or good way, and this may very well depend not on your actions or deeds, but simply upon the attitude you have at that second. If you carry a frown walking into a house where there are guests, they may feel un-welcomed. The frown may only last a few moments, but that will be long enough to leave a bad impression on some hearts.

“No greater deed will be placed in the balance than a good attitude towards others”(Hadith-Tirmidhi)

Indeed attitude will lead a person to altitude. Often persons with the worst past build the best future!

The parents of the Hafidh will be honored on the Day of Judgment

Latest

The Holy Quran is the sacred Word of Allah Most High.  It is a means of reformation for the entire mankind.  Its verses are nothing but guidance and a cure.  Allah Most High revealed the other heavenly books but did not undertake the responsibility of protecting them.  The responsibility to do so was assigned to the scholars of that nation as given in the following verse of Surah Maida:

…And the divines and the rabbis because they were assigned to safeguard the Book of Allah….Surah Maaida (5:44)

As the Holy Quran was revealed to the last and Final Prophet, Hadhrat Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and its rules and precepts are to remain until the end of time, Allah Most High undertook this responsibility Himself.  Almighty Allah says in the Holy Quran:

Verily, We alone have revealed this (the Holy Quran), and surely We alone will guard it. Surah Hijr (15:9)

The revered Mufti said that Allah Most High is the Ultimate Protector of the Holy Quran and in this world of means and reasons, Allah Most High has made the scholars the means of safeguarding the meanings of the Holy Quran and the Huffadh the means of protecting the words of the Holy Quran.  Almighty Allah is the Reciter of the Holy Quran.  It is but His Grace and Benevolence that His worshippers also recite the Holy Quran.

In this world, no one can use the title of the highest ruler of the land.  If anyone does so, it is considered a crime.  However, it is only by virtue of the relationship with Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) that we human beings are also granted blessings of the Sacred Attributes of the Lord Almighty and we are also known as Hafidh and Qari of the Holy Quran.

The revered Mufti said that the recitation of the Holy Quran is the best activity and the best form of worship.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  The best among you is the one who learns the Holy Quran and instructs others in it.

Allah Most High has granted His sacred Word to us.  The way to show our thankfulness and gratefulness for it is to fulfill its rights.  The Holy Quran has 4 rights which we have to fulfill:

The first one is that we should recite it.

The second one is that we should memorize it.

The third is that we should develop understanding of it.

The fourth is that we should act on its demands.

The revered Mufti said that it is fast becoming a trend that in the name of developing the understanding of the Holy Quran, in Taraweeh, etc. relatively less number of the verses of the Holy Quran is recited and the same time is spent in understanding of the Holy Quran. This way, we are unintentionally drawing ourselves away from the recitation of the Holy Quran.  The desire to understand the Holy Quran is indeed valuable, but we should not turn away from the recitation of the Holy Quran for its sake.

There is reward for only the recitation of the Holy Quran as well.  If we read any other book of the world without understanding it, we get bored in a matter of minutes.  The Holy Quran is the only book which even if it is read without understanding it, the interest of the recite does not waver.

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said to me:  O Abu Hurairah!  Keep teaching the Holy Quran to people and keep learning it.  Because if death overtakes when engaged in this activity, then angels will come to visit your grave the way the Ka’aba is visited.

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  Whoever reads the Holy Quran and believes that the things permitted by it are permitted and believes that the things prohibited by it are prohibited, then that person will enter Paradise and will intercede and take 10 such people of his family into Paradise for whom entry into hell was certain.

On the Day of Judgment such a crown will be placed on the heads of the parents of the memorizer of the Holy Quran that its radiance will rival the sun.  If any person resolved to memorize the Holy Quran and starts memorizing it and due to some reason does not memorize the entire Holy Quran and dies, then it is mentioned in Hadith that Allah Most High will appoint an angel for that person who will teach him the Holy Quran in the grave.  Then on the Day of Judgment that person will be resurrected as a Hafidh of the Holy Quran.

Latest

13-07-2016

PRESS RELEASE:

NSC's Resolution about Hate Speeches, Racial and Religious incitements

The National Shoora Council at a special meeting with its Member Organisation (MOs) held on 11 July 2016, resolved as follows:

  1. In the backdrop of the re-emergence of anti-Muslim hate speeches, racial and religious incitements against the minority communities, the NSC calls upon the Government that it has a duty to create and ensure an environment where all its citizens can live peacefully.

  2. The Government and the relevant State agencies like the Police must protect and safeguard the fundamental rights of its citizens without discrimination as enshrined in the Constitution and uphold the Rule of Law without fear or favour.

  3. To meet with HE The President, Mr. Maithripala Sirisena, The Hon. Prime Minister Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe, Muslim Politicians ,The Defence Secretary, advocacy groups and Civil organisations to discuss with them the rise of racism and religious violence in the country.

  4. NSC also notes that there could be a hidden agenda in the recurrence of such uncultured racist behaviour which may also include destabilising the government, create economic turmoil and drag the country towards anarchy.

  5. The NSC recognises that the media in all its form has a crucial role to play in keeping with the ethics of journalism and moral values.

  6. The NSC recognises that the bad conduct of a few does not in any way represent the majority of the cultured, decent and respectable Sinhalese people. It also understands that the bad behaviour of some disgruntled monks do not represent the majority of the Sangha community.

  7. Therefore, the NSC strongly appeals to the Muslim community to ignore all forms of provocation, incitement or intimidation and to be patient and calm without resorting to any form of reaction whatsoever. The NSC reminds the Muslims that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance.

  8. The NSC plans to set up a permanent arm aimed at addressing this phenomenon, to help the government by identifying solutions, to clarify misinformation, misconceptions and misperceptions about Muslims and Islam and other activities which will help create understanding and peaceful co-existence.

Ramadaan almost over…Now what???

Latest

By Umm Ammarah

The Month of Ramadaan is coming to an end and the transition from Ramadaan to Eid and thereafter should be a path the that brings us closer to our Creator and a path that treads the Sunnah i.e. The way of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) .

After a month of sacrifice, Allah Ta’ala takes it upon Himself to reward His faithful servants. Allah Ta’ala is the Most Generous and Most Benevolent. Indeed Allah Ta’ala’s Generosity multiplies in Ramadaan. When Allah Ta’ala sees His servants carry out all their duties  faithfully and strive to gain closeness to Him through fasting ,salaat (prayer) ,patience, recitation of Quraan ,zikr ,dua ,and controlling of even permissible desires  and needs like food, drink etc. then Allah Ta’ala bestows on His faithful servants a special prize on the night preceding the day of Eid…

THE PRIZE GIVING NIGHT:

Allah Ta’ala bestows the rewards on those who have spent the month in His obedience and all their Du’as (prayers) on such an occasion are indeed accepted. It has been the practice of The Messenger of Allah Ta’ala (pbuh)that he would not sleep during the night preceding  Eid-ul –Fitr, this night has been named Laylatul Jaaiza (The Prize Giving night). The night when the faithful and obedient servants of Allah Ta’ala are given the true reward. To benefit from this opportunity, one should exert in prayer and ask Allah Ta’ala for all our needs. Our Beloved Rasulullah (Salallaho alaihe wassallam) said: "The person who stays awake on the nights preceding the two Eids occupying himself with ibâdah(worship), his heart will not die on the day when everyone's heart will perish." (his heart will not die during the time of evil and corruption). It could also mean that with the blowing of the trumpet his soul will not become unconscious. (Hadith –Ibn Majah)

The then comes the joyous day of…

EID-UL-FITR:

Celebrated on the first day of Shawwaal, at the completion of Ramadhaan. Shawwaal is the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. Eid-al-Fitr is a very joyous day for the believing men and women. On this day Muslims show their real joy for the many blessings Allah Ta’ala has given to them to fulfil their obligation of fasting and other good deeds during the blessed month of Ramadhaan.

Indeed this joyous day can cannot pass by without remembering the poor and destitute…

SADAQTUL FITR:

Islam has prescribed a simple yet graceful way to observe this happy day. First of all well off Muslims start their day by giving charity Sadaqtul Fitr to the poor of their society, so that the less endowed can also enjoy their day along with others. Ibn Abbas(RA) said that theMessenger of Allah Ta’ala (pbuh ) enjoined Sadaqatul Fitr so that those who fasted  may be purified of idle deeds and shameful talk committed during Ramadaan and so that the poor may be fed. Whoever gives it before salaah( even days before) will have his obligation accepted, and whoever gives it after salaah it will be an ordinary charity.(Hadith -Abu Dawood)

This day of Eid should be spent in the way shown to us by The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)…

SUNNAH ACTS ON THE DAY OF EID:

  • Wake up early.
  • Take a Ghusl (bath) before Eid Salaah
  • Brush your teeth (use Miswaak)
  • Dress up, putting on best clothes available.
  • Use itr (perfume)
  • Eat something sweet before proceeding to the Eid Musallah e.g. Dates etc.
  • Pay Sadaqatul Fitr before Salaatul-Eid (on Eid-al-Fitr).
  • Go to Eid Musallah (Eid Gah/prayer ground) early.
  • Offer Salaah-al-Eid in congregation in an Eid Musallah except when weather is not permitting like rain, snow, etc.
  • Use different roads en route to the Eid Musallah and back home.
  • Recite the following Takbir on the way to Eid Musallah :

Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar. La ila-ha illallahu Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar. Wa-lillahil hamd. (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is Greatest, Allah is Greatest. And all praises are for Allah)

THE EID PRAYER-And then comes along the morning of Eid, Allah Ta’ala sends down the angels to all the lands in the earth, where they take their positions at access points of roads calling out with a voice that is heard by all accept man and jinn. Allah Ta’ala then says: I call you to witness, Oh my Angels that for their having fasted during the month of Ramadaan ,and for their having s tood before me in prayer by night, I have granted to them as reward My pleasure and have granted them forgiveness.-Allah Ta’ala will then say…,Oh my servants ask now of Me, for I swear by My honour and My Greatness, that whatsoever you shall beg of me this day in this assembly of yours for the needs of the Hereafter ,I shall grant you, and what so ever  you shall ask for your worldly needs shall look at you favourably. (Hadith-Targheeb)

'When the companions of Allah Ta’ala's Messenger (peace be upon him) met on the day of `Eid, they would say to each other, 'TaqaballAllahu Ta’ala minna wa minkum (may Allah Ta’ala accept from you and us ).” (Fathul  Bari ).

TIPS ON HOW TO SPEND THE DAY OF EID:

  • Keep in mind the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala and upholding Shari'ah at ALL times.
  • Adorn yourself and your family modestly in the best of garments (not necessarily new).
  • Avoid over eating and other festivities that have no benefit.
  • Visit the poor, needy, orphans, elderly and sick.
  • Should Eid be made at “my mum or your mum or wherever?” This requires Shura/Mashurah (mutual consultation). Shurah is a Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (Sallalaho alaihe wassallam).Try to compromise and accommodate each other.
  • Maintain and strengthen family bonds- Rasulullah (Salallaho alaihe wassallam) is reported to have said, "Anyone who wishes to have his means of livelihood enlarged and a prolonged life, should treat his relatives with kindness."(Hadith)
  • Don't forget the suffering, oppressed, poor and needy Muslims in all parts of the world in your du’as and charity.
  • Be punctual with your acts of worship and on this joyous day.

BE CAUTIOUS!- Avoid excessive indulgence of any kind and stay away from places where the laws of Islam are violated. It is a joyous occasion indeed and let it be spent in ways that are pleasing to our Creator. Use the day profitably to earn the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala and continue to do so everyday.

A Muslim is a Muslim for life and not just during Ramadaan!”

WHAT NOW AFTER RAMADAANWe leave the month Ramadaan, its beautif ul days and nights, we leave the  Month of Mercy wherein we excelled in recitation of the Quraan , Taqwa and Ibadat, sympathy ,forgiveness...we need to ask ourselves: Ramadaaan is over and what have we gained?

Ramadaan was a 30 day course on self restraint and piety , have we graduated from the course having learnt to fight our desires and defeat them..? Have we recharged our spiritual batteries and gained Taqwa (Allah consciousness)? If we have …then ALHAMDULILLAH (Praise be to Allah)…now let us continue to obey Allah Ta’ala and ask Allah Ta’ala to keep us steadfast. Ramadaan is over and Shawwal has come,  let us save the changes that we all made in our lives during the month of Ramadaan. Let Ramadaan not be a final destination but a stepping stone to greater good from now on. We need to make a firm resolution to cont inue with the momentum and lead a life of piety and free of sins. We now face another eleven months after this training. Let it be that we come out stronger and better servants of Allah Ta’ala…AMEEN!

Eid Mubarak!

The Prize Giving!

By Abdur Rahmaan Umar

“What! Are they crazy?” shouted Fatima, banging the knife on chopping board hard enough to scatter carrots in every direction and send the cat racing for the back door.

“What do they think? How can they possibly...” she sighed deeply, and raised the knife for another assault on the chopping board.

“Don’t they realise we have so much work to do? I mean who schedules a prize giving for the night before Eid.”

“But ma...that’s what Moulana(Sheikh)  said today. That there definitely is a prize giving,” whispered Ahmed, cowering behind a chair in case another barrage of carrots was launched.

“Which Moulana? And why don’t they think!” she continued, pausing just long enough to heave another heavy sigh, “We have so much to do the night before Eid. Get the kids clothes ready, prepare the plates, layer the biryani...and...this year Eid is by us, so everyone from ninety nine kilometres around will be here. So is Moulana going to come layer the Biryani?”

“I think I must phone him. Now! He must cancel this madness,” she moaned, “Prize giving before Eid! My foot!”

“And who must be there? Must we all come?”

Ahmed lifted head just a little above the chair and said “Yes, ma. He said it’s for everybody. No one should be left out.”

“Well I’ll explain to him,” said Fatima, reaching for the mobile phone, “then maybe he’ll understand why some people...some people...like me just can’t be there. We have work, you know?”

Fatima began banging the numbers into the phone which let out loud beep with every painful prod.

“Gee, Moulana Yusuf!” she began, “What’s this about a prize giving the night before Eid? Whose crazy idea was this? Do you people know what the night of Eid is? We have so much to do?”

Without waiting for answers she continued, “I thought being a Muslim school you would think about us poor mothers who have to do EVERYTHING. I mean who decided that the school should have a prize giving the night before Eid? So whose grand idea was it?”

She sighed deeply and wiped the moisture collecting in her eye.

Moulana took advantage of the brief pause to squeeze in a word, “Sorry sister, but it wasn’t my idea.”

“Then who’s grand idea was this! Who decided this?” she shouted. The phone nearly slipping out of her hand.

“Allah’s idea,” came the almost inaudible reply.

“Moulana! If I wasn’t  fatsing I would have said such things that would have made your head spin in two directions. What has Allah got to do with the school timetable?” cried Fatima, her big frame collapsing into the nearest kitchen chair, accompanied by more deep sighs and a few moans.

“Sister, please listen to me,” said, Moulana taking advantage of the few second of silence, “There is a prize giving and it was at the request of Allah Ta’ala.”

Fatima straightened up in the chair and began to say something but Moulana continued, “As part of a lengthy Hadith in a book called Targheeb narrated by Ibn Abbas Radiallahu anhuma, the Noble Messenger Sallahu alaihi wasalam said that the night of Eidul Fitr is called Laylatul Jaa’izah – the night of prize giving. And in another Hadith narrated from Abu Hurairah Radiallahu anhu, Rasulallah Salallahu Alaihi wasalam mentioned that on the last night of Ramadaan Allah Ta’ala forgives the believers. The Companions Radiallahu Anhum enquired if that last night was Laylatul Qadr, and the Messenger replied “No, but it is only right that a servant should be given his reward on having completed his service. ”

“So I explained to the children that just as they want to be honoured at the school prize giving and they work hard the whole year so they could get an award – Allah Ta’ala also rewards those servants of His who excelled during the months of Ramadaan and they are honoured with special awards for the Aghirah(Hereafter).”

Fatima’s faced flushed a bright pink and she let out a soft moan, “I didn’t know that”

“The night before Eid,” continued Moulana Yusuf, “is a very important night and we should at least spend part of it in the worship of Allah. Despite all the other work we have, we should not lose the blessing of this night, because this is a such a night that who so ever remains awake on this night in the worship of his Lord, Allah, his heart will not die on the day when hearts will die?”

“What does that mean?” enquired Fatima now curious about this special night.

“On the day of Judgement when hearts will nearly die out of fear, this person will be free of such fear and anguish. Also, that person who remembers Allah is like a living person and the one who doesn’t is like a dead person. So to emphasise – this is a very important night that we often forget because we are too busy preparing for the next day or have already started celebrating Eid.”

Fatima stared at the pink slippers on her feet, “I’m sorry I shouted at you Moulana, but we just have so much pressure with Eid coming, there is so much to do. But I will have to make some time for Ibadat (worship) on this special night. But why didn’t Ahmed tell me this.”

Ahmed now stood boldly away from the kitchen chair, “Because, Ma.....you didn’t give me chance to explain.”

The failure so far to curtail the extremist Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) activities against the Muslim community is a major black mark on the Yahapalana government as it promised to bring peace and reconciliation to the country. It is understood that people’s racial attitudes, hatred or prejudices cannot easily be eliminated just because of a governmental change after an election. However, it is the bounden duty of any government to curtail open extremist activities, spreading hate and incitement against communities. This is more so in the case of a government elected on the promise of good governance, rule of law and justice to all communities and particularly to the vulnerable minorities.

Preaching of Hate

What Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara has demonstrated at the Satyagraha meeting at Mahiyangana on the 21st of this month is not simply expressing his views. It does not cover under the freedom of expression. It is a clear incitement against the Muslim community and a challenge to the rule of law and the law enforcement authorities. He should have been already arrested and brought before the law of the country.

His hate against the Muslim community in this instance is very clear. It has been clear even before and throughout his ‘political career.’ He is simply not a proper Buddhist monk in my opinion but a political activist with extremist views and intensions bordering on a fascist ideology and intent.

Gnanasara is always an emotionally charged person often with the use of filthy language. These are clear signs of a fascist lineage. It is typical of a fascist propagandist to lie, distort or make a mountain out of a molehill. He has said “First they threw rotten eggs at our teachers in Madawala, and then they tried to build a mosque which was taller than the height of the Dalada Maligawa.” Who has given him the sole authority to speak on behalf of the Sinhala people or the Buddhists? Even if he has genuine concerns about the said incidents (which I doubt/dispute), threatening the Muslim community in general is not the way to resolve a dispute. The foremost place for Buddhism cannot be the height of the Dalada Maligawa!

Promotion of Incitement

Most alarming is his threat to enact the ‘phase two of Aluthgama.’ This is where his violent and fascist intent is very clear. After referring to possible ‘intelligence officers’ listening to his speech he said, “go and tell the authorities that if they don’t give a solution to what we demand, we will launch the phase two of Aluthgama.” The demand he placed was to release the two young persons in remand who had apparently intimidated the Muslim businesses in the area to close down their shops during a protest. The said protest had apparently organized because of the ‘pulling down of a Buddhist flag’ by a Muslim youth which should also be condemned and consider provocative. However, this is not a recent incident but more of a pretext.

In his speech, he not only attacked the Muslims but also the Tamils. In his speech, he didn’t fail to recall the ‘proverbial mother’! If anyone has concerns about the people in custody, the right place to go is the courts and not the market place. He has always opted to disregard the laws and law enforcement authorities in the country. In addition to fascism, he also demonstrates a complex strand of anarchism. He cannot simply be considered as a proper Buddhist monk.

His most alarming threat of violence was against the police. Referring to the IGP, he said, “If you can’t handle them, tell us, we will take care of them. We only need about 50 people to take care of them, and we are not scared to go behind bars.” He was referring to the Mahiyangana police as ‘them’ and clearly threatening mob violence as he admitted it would place them behind bars. However, such a threat is sufficient enough to arrest him as a precaution and charge him against incitement.

Why Not to Condemn All Monks

Gnanasara’s outburst, violence or fascism should not be a reason to condemn all Buddhist monks. He is in saffron robes, but he is not a proper Buddhist monk in my opinion. What is alarming however is he is flanked by several other ‘Buddhist monks,’ with or without knowing the gravity of what they do or utter. This is a matter to be untangled preferably within the Buddhist Sangha themselves. It is also apparent that Gnanasara is exploiting business enmities between different communities to promote his fascist cause and in this case at Mahiyangana.
It is not unusual for the clergy of different religions or denominations to get involved in politics, extremist movements or even fascism. However, this cannot be considered ‘healthy for religion or for politics.’ Particularly in Hungary during the rise of Fascism in 1930s, there were numerous Catholic priests who went behind Szalasi’s movement. Ference Szalasi was the leader of the Arrow Cross Party which was responsible for the killing and mayhem of thousands of Jews. This is just an example.

This is also the case today of many Imams and other Islamic religious leaders supporting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). However, there are many other Imam’s and leaders condemning or distancing themselves from ISIS. Sri Lanka is fortunate to have moderate or ‘Abangan’ Islamic believers and the government or the public should be mindful of not to push the youngsters to the extremes like in some Western countries which could create a virtual hell as a result of these religious polarizations. That is one reason why lawful action should be taken forthwith against Gnanasara and his gang.

Cambodian Example

In the case of curtailing Buddhist monks going for politics or for extremist politics, there were prohibitions in the Cambodian constitution before 1975 forbidding Buddhist monks even in voting. I think it was influenced by the views of Prince Norodom Sihanouk of that time. However this position changed after the UN inspired new constitution in 1993 without any prohibition. Yet until 2006, the Buddhist Supreme Patriarchs (very much similar to our Sanga Nayakas) banned the Buddhist monks voting or even registering for voting, believing that the ‘monks should not be biased.’

However, in recent times this has changed again. A good number of Buddhist monks are now involved in various social causes like human rights and peace. However, there are no organizations such as the BBS or the 969 Movement of Ashin Wirathu in Mynamar (Burma). This is despite the presence of numerous Cham Muslims or minority Vietnamese in Cambodia. Still the Cambodian Buddhist Supreme Patriarchs hold the moral authority to refrain their respective member monks getting involved in extremist politics or unacceptable ventures contrary to the Buddhist principles. This is part of the Sangha Vinaya (discipline) fairly maintained in Cambodia.

I am not at all advocating a constitutional prohibition of Buddhist monks or other priests getting involved in politics like in pre-1975 Cambodia. However, there should be some constraints within all religions or religious denominations of their clergy men or women getting involved in politics or extremist politics. The case of Gnanasara however is different. He is obviously a potential fascist, who can derail all the good intentions of reconciliation and peace in the country. He is apparently a law breaker and inciter who should be brought before the law.

A Postscript

After finishing the above short peace, I had the occasion to watch an interview of Khaled Abol Naga, the prominent Egyptian actor, producer and the film director over the ABC 24 TV (Australia) this afternoon. When he was asked what he thinks about the reasons for many young people going for the cause of ISIS, he said that “when you leave a small injustice unaddressed, the grievances become accumulated. That is what happened after the creation of Israel neglecting the Palestinians and others.”

“The ISIS however is not the solution but the exacerbation of the problem,” he emphasized. The reason he gave was very common to Buddhism, Christianity or Islam: “hatred begets hatred” (Wairayen Wairaya Nosan Sinde). This is why the rule of law should be administered, for Gnanasara or any other perpetrators, without any hatred or vengeance.
