NSC's Resolution about Hate Speeches, Racial and Religious incitements

The National Shoora Council at a special meeting with its Member Organisation (MOs) held on 11 July 2016, resolved as follows:


  1. In the backdrop of the re-emergence of anti-Muslim hate speeches, racial and religious incitements against the minority communities, the NSC calls upon the Government that it has a duty to create and ensure an environment where all its citizens can live peacefully.

  2. The Government and the relevant State agencies like the Police must protect and safeguard the fundamental rights of its citizens without discrimination as enshrined in the Constitution and uphold the Rule of Law without fear or favour.

  3. To meet with HE The President, Mr. Maithripala Sirisena, The Hon. Prime Minister Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe, Muslim Politicians ,The Defence Secretary, advocacy groups and Civil organisations to discuss with them the rise of racism and religious violence in the country.

  4. NSC also notes that there could be a hidden agenda in the recurrence of such uncultured racist behaviour which may also include destabilising the government, create economic turmoil and drag the country towards anarchy.

  5. The NSC recognises that the media in all its form has a crucial role to play in keeping with the ethics of journalism and moral values.

  6. The NSC recognises that the bad conduct of a few does not in any way represent the majority of the cultured, decent and respectable Sinhalese people. It also understands that the bad behaviour of some disgruntled monks do not represent the majority of the Sangha community.

  7. Therefore, the NSC strongly appeals to the Muslim community to ignore all forms of provocation, incitement or intimidation and to be patient and calm without resorting to any form of reaction whatsoever. The NSC reminds the Muslims that Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance.

  8. The NSC plans to set up a permanent arm aimed at addressing this phenomenon, to help the government by identifying solutions, to clarify misinformation, misconceptions and misperceptions about Muslims and Islam and other activities which will help create understanding and peaceful co-existence.

நாட்டில் தற்போது தோன்றியிருக்கும் இனவாத சூழல் தொடர்பான தேசிய ஷுரா சபையின் தீர்மானங்கள்

2016 ஜூலை 11 ஆம் திகதி அன்று தேசிய ஷுரா சபையின் அங்கத்துவ அமைப்புகளுடனான விஷேட சந்திப்பின் போது நாட்டில் நிலவும் தற்போதைய சூழ்நிலையை கருத்திற் கொண்டு பின்வரும் சில முக்கியமான தீர்மானங்களை எடுக்கப்பட்டன :

  1. முஸ்லிம்களது மனதைப் புண்படுத்தும் அவர்களுக்கெதிரான விஷமப் பிரசாரங்களும் சிறுபான்மை இனத்தவர்கள் மற்றும் மதங்களுக்கெதிரான இனவாத மதவாத செயற்பாடுகளும் மீண்டும் அதிகரித்து வரும் தற்போதைய சூழலில் நாட்டின் சகல குடிமக்களும் சாந்தி சமாதானத்துடன் வாழும் ஒரு சூழலை உருவாக்கும் மற்றும் அதனை ஊர்ஜிதப்படுத்தும் பொறுப்பு அரசாங்கத்துக்கு இருக்கிறது என்பதை தேசிய ஷூரா சபை வலியுறுத்த விரும்புகிறது.

  2. அரசியல் யாப்பில் வலியுறுத்தப்பட்டிருப்பதுபோல அரசாங்கமும் நீதி மற்றும் சட்டத்தை நிலைநாட்டும் பொறுப்பை ஏற்றுள்ள  பொலிஸ் போன்ற அரச நிறுவனங்களும் நாட்டின் சகல பிரஜைகளினதும் அடிப்படை உரிமைகளைப் பேணிப்பாதுகாக்க வேண்டும். மேலும் சட்டத்தையும் ஒழுங்கையும் நிலைநாட்டும்  விடயத்தில் எவ்வித அச்சமோ  பாரபட்சமோ இல்லாமல் நடந்து கொள்ளவதும் அவசியமாகும்.

  3. இது தொடர்பாக ஜனாதிபதி கெளரவ மைத்திரிபால சிரிசேன, கெளரவ பிரதமர் ரணில் விக்ரமசிங்க, முஸ்லிம் அரசியல்வாதிகள், பாதுகாப்பு செயலாளர் மேலும் அதிகரித்து வரும் இன மற்றும் மத விரோத சக்திகளின் முயற்சிகளை முறியடிக்க பாடுபட்டு வரும் தன்னார்வக் குழுக்கள் போன்றோரை சந்தித்து அதிகரித்துவரும் இனவாதம் மற்றும் மதரீதியான வன்முறைகள் தொடர்பாக கலந்துரையாடுவதற்கு தேசிய ஷூரா சபை தீர்மானித்துள்ளது.

  4. தற்காலத்தில் தலைதூக்கியிருக்கும் பண்பாடற்ற இனவாத செயற்பாடுகளின் பின்னணியில் மறைவான ஒரு நிகழ்ச்சி நிரல் இருக்கலாம் என தேசிய ஷூரரா சபை  கருதுவதுடன் அவற்றின் மூலம் அரசாங்கத்தை ஆட்டங்காணச் செய்து, தேசத்தின் பொருளாதாரத்தை சீர்குலைத்து நாட்டை மீண்டும் அராஜக நிலைக்கு கொண்டுவரும் நோக்கமும் அதற்குள் அடங்கியிருக்கலாம் என தேசிய ஷூரா சபை சந்தேகிக்கின்றது.

  5. இதேவேளை ஊடக தர்மத்தைப் பேணிக்கொள்வதிலும் அதற்கான ஒழுக்க விழுமியங்களுக்கு மதிப்பளித்து நடந்து கொள்வதிலும் சகல வகையான ஊடகங்களுக்கும் அதிமுக்கிய பங்கு உண்டு எனவும் தேசிய ஷூரா சபை நம்புகின்றது.

  6. இதேவேளை சிங்கள சமூகத்திலுள்ள ஒரு சிலரது மோசமான நடவடிக்கைகளைப் பொருத்தவரையில் பண்பாடான மரியாதைக்குரிய பெரும் எண்ணிக்கையிலான சிங்கள மக்களை அவை எந்தவகையிலும் பிரதிநிதித்துவப்படுத்தவில்லை என்பதை ஷூரா சபை நன்கு உணர்ந்துள்ளது. ஒரு சில பெளத்த மதகுருக்களது மோசமான நடவடிக்கைகள் முழு பெளத்த பிக்கு சமூகத்தையும் பிரதிநிதித்துவப்படுத்தமாட்டாது  என்ற உண்மையயும் அது விளங்கிவைத்துள்ளது.

  7. எனவே தீய சக்திகளின் தூண்டுதல் மற்றும் தந்திரங்களுக்குள் சிக்க வேண்டாம் என்றும் பொறுமையை கடைபிடிக்கமாறும் விட்டுக் கொடுத்து நடக்குமாறும் முஸ்லிம்களை தேசிய சூரா சபை வலியுறுத்திக் கேட்டுக் கொள்கின்றது. இஸ்லாம் என்பது அமைதியையும் அன்பையையும் வலியுறுத்தும் சாந்தி மார்க்கம் ஆகும் என்பதையும் அது முஸ்லிம்களுக்கு நினைவூட்ட விரும்புகிறது.

  8. இந்த அசாதாரண சூழலை கையாழுவதற்கும்  பிரச்சினைகளுக்கான தீர்வுகளை அரசு காண்பதற்கு உதவும் வகையிலும் இஸ்லாத்தையும்முஸ்லிம்களையும் பற்றிய தவறான செய்திகளையும் பிழையான கருத்துக்களையும் தெளிவுபடுத்துவதற்குமான ஒரு பிரத்தியேகமான பிரிவை அமைப்பது பற்றி; தேசிய ஷூரா சபை ஆராய்ந்து வருகின்றது. இது பரஸ்பர புரிந்துணர்வும் சமாதான சகவாழ்வும் எற்பட வழிவகுக்கும்

Ramadaan almost over…Now what???

The Month of Ramadaan is coming to an end and the transition from Ramadaan to Eid and thereafter should be a path the that brings us closer to our Creator and a path that treads the Sunnah i.e. The way of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) .

After a month of sacrifice, Allah Ta’ala takes it upon Himself to reward His faithful servants. Allah Ta’ala is the Most Generous and Most Benevolent. Indeed Allah Ta’ala’s Generosity multiplies in Ramadaan. When Allah Ta’ala sees His servants carry out all their duties  faithfully and strive to gain closeness to Him through fasting ,salaat (prayer) ,patience,recitation of Quraan ,zikr ,dua ,and controlling of even permissible desires  and needs like food, drink etc. then Allah Ta’ala bestows on His faithful servants a special prize on the night preceding the day of Eid…


Allah Ta’ala bestows the rewards on those who have spent the month in His obedience and all their Du’as (prayers) on such an occasion are indeed accepted. It has been the practice of The Messenger of Allah Ta’ala (pbuh)that he would not sleep during the night preceding  Eid-ul –Fitr, this night has been named Laylatul Jaaiza (The Prize Giving night). The night when the faithful and obedient servants of Allah Ta’ala are given the true reward. To benefit from this opportunity, one should exert in prayer and ask Allah Ta’ala for all our needs.Our Beloved Rasulullah (Salallaho alaihe wassallam) said: "The person who stays awake on the nights preceding the two Eids occupying himself with ibâdah(worship), his heart will not die on the day when everyone's heart will perish." (his heart will not die during the time of evil and corruption). It could also mean that with the blowing of the trumpet his soul will not become unconscious. (Hadith –Ibn Majah)

The then comes the joyous day of…


Celebrated on the first day of Shawwaal, at the completion of Ramadhaan. Shawwaal is the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. Eid-al-Fitr is a very joyous day for the believing men and women. On this day Muslims show their real joy for the many blessings Allah Ta’ala has given to them to fulfil their obligation of fasting and other good deeds during the blessed month of Ramadhaan.

Indeed this joyous day can cannot pass by without remembering the poor and destitute…


Islam has prescribed a simple yet graceful way to observe this happy day. First of all well off Muslims start their day by giving charity Sadaqtul Fitr to the poor of their society, so that the less endowed can also enjoy their day along with others. Ibn Abbas(RA) said that theMessenger of Allah Ta’ala (pbuh ) enjoined Sadaqatul Fitr so that those who fasted  may be purified of idle deeds and shameful talk committed during Ramadaan and so that the poor may be fed. Whoever gives it before salaah( even days before) will have his obligation accepted, and whoever gives it after salaah it will be an ordinary charity.(Hadith -Abu Dawood)

This day of Eid should be spent in the way shown to us by The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)…


  • Wake up early.
  • Take a Ghusl (bath) before Eid Salaah
  • Brush your teeth (use Miswaak)
  • Dress up, putting on best clothes available.
  • Use itr (perfume)
  • Eat something sweet before proceeding to the Eid Musallah e.g. Dates etc.
  • Pay Sadaqatul Fitr before Salaatul-Eid (on Eid-al-Fitr).
  • Go to Eid Musallah (Eid Gah/prayer ground) early.
  • Offer Salaah-al-Eid in congregation in an Eid Musallah except when weather is not permitting like rain, snow, etc.
  • Use different roads en route to the Eid Musallah and back home.
  • Recite the following Takbir on the way to Eid Musallah :

Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar. La ila-ha illallahu Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar. Wa-lillahil hamd. (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is Greatest, Allah is Greatest. And all praises are for Allah)

THE EID PRAYER-And then comes along the morning of Eid, Allah Ta’ala sends down the angels to all the lands in the earth, where they take their positions at access points of roads calling out with a voice that is heard by all accept man and jinn. Allah Ta’ala then says: I call you to witness, Oh my Angels that for their having fasted during the month of Ramadaan ,and for their having s tood before me in prayer by night, I have granted to them as reward My pleasure and have granted them forgiveness.-Allah Ta’ala will then say…,Oh my servants ask now of Me, for I swear by My honour and My Greatness, that whatsoever you shall beg of me this day in this assembly of yours for the needs of the Hereafter ,I shall grant you, and what so ever  you shall ask for your worldly needs shall look at you favourably. (Hadith-Targheeb)

'When the companions of Allah Ta’ala's Messenger (peace be upon him) met on the day of `Eid, they would say to each other, 'TaqaballAllahu Ta’ala minna wa minkum (may Allah Ta’ala accept from you and us ).” (Fathul  Bari ).


  • Keep in mind the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala and upholding Shari'ah at ALL times.
  • Adorn yourself and your family modestly in the best of garments (not necessarily new).
  • Avoid over eating and other festivities that have no benefit.
  • Visit the poor, needy, orphans, elderly and sick.
  • Should Eid be made at “my mum or your mum or wherever?” This requires Shura/Mashurah (mutual consultation). Shurah is a Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (Sallalaho alaihe wassallam).Try to compromise and accommodate each other.
  • Maintain and strengthen family bonds- Rasulullah (Salallaho alaihe wassallam) is reported to have said, "Anyone who wishes to have his means of livelihood enlarged and a prolonged life, should treat his relatives with kindness."(Hadith)
  • Don't forget the suffering, oppressed, poor and needy Muslims in all parts of the world in your du’as and charity.
  • Be punctual with your acts of worship and on this joyous day.

BE CAUTIOUS!- Avoid excessive indulgence of any kind and stay away from places where the laws of Islam are violated. It is a joyous occasion indeed and let it be spent in ways that are pleasing to our Creator. Use the day profitably to earn the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala and continue to do so everyday.

WHAT NOW AFTER RAMADAANWe leave the month Ramadaan, its beautif ul days and nights, we leave the  Month of Mercy wherein we excelled in recitation of the Quraan , Taqwa and Ibadat, sympathy ,forgiveness...we need to ask ourselves: Ramadaaan is over and what have we gained?

Ramadaan was a 30 day course on self restraint and piety , have we graduated from the course having learnt to fight our desires and defeat them..? Have we recharged our spiritual batteries and gained Taqwa (Allah consciousness)? If we have …then ALHAMDULILLAH (Praise be to Allah)…now let us continue to obey Allah Ta’ala and ask Allah Ta’ala to keep us steadfast. Ramadaan is over and Shawwal has come,  let us save the changes that we all made in our lives during the month of Ramadaan. Let Ramadaan not be a final destination but a stepping stone to greater good from now on. We need to make a firm resolution to cont inue with the momentum and lead a life of piety and free of sins. We now face another eleven months after this training. Let it be that we come out stronger and better servants of Allah Ta’ala…AMEEN!

The Prize Giving!

“What! Are they crazy?” shouted Fatima, banging the knife on chopping board hard enough to scatter carrots in every direction and send the cat racing for the back door.

“What do they think? How can they possibly...” she sighed deeply, and raised the knife for another assault on the chopping board.

“Don’t they realise we have so much work to do? I mean who schedules a prize giving for the night before Eid.”

“But ma...that’s what Moulana(Sheikh)  said today. That there definitely is a prize giving,” whispered Ahmed, cowering behind a chair in case another barrage of carrots was launched.

“Which Moulana? And why don’t they think!” she continued, pausing just long enough to heave another heavy sigh, “We have so much to do the night before Eid. Get the kids clothes ready, prepare the plates, layer the biryani...and...this year Eid is by us, so everyone from ninety nine kilometres around will be here. So is Moulana going to come layer the Biryani?”

“I think I must phone him. Now! He must cancel this madness,” she moaned, “Prize giving before Eid! My foot!”

“And who must be there? Must we all come?”

Ahmed lifted head just a little above the chair and said “Yes, ma. He said it’s for everybody. No one should be left out.”

“Well I’ll explain to him,” said Fatima, reaching for the mobile phone, “then maybe he’ll understand why some people...some me just can’t be there. We have work, you know?”

Fatima began banging the numbers into the phone which let out loud beep with every painful prod.

“Gee, Moulana Yusuf!” she began, “What’s this about a prize giving the night before Eid? Whose crazy idea was this? Do you people know what the night of Eid is? We have so much to do?”

Without waiting for answers she continued, “I thought being a Muslim school you would think about us poor mothers who have to do EVERYTHING. I mean who decided that the school should have a prize giving the night before Eid? So whose grand idea was it?”

She sighed deeply and wiped the moisture collecting in her eye.

Moulana took advantage of the brief pause to squeeze in a word, “Sorry sister, but it wasn’t my idea.”

“Then who’s grand idea was this! Who decided this?” she shouted. The phone nearly slipping out of her hand.

“Allah’s idea,” came the almost inaudible reply.

“Moulana! If I wasn’t  fatsing I would have said such things that would have made your head spin in two directions. What has Allah got to do with the school timetable?” cried Fatima, her big frame collapsing into the nearest kitchen chair, accompanied by more deep sighs and a few moans.

“Sister, please listen to me,” said, Moulana taking advantage of the few second of silence, “There is a prize giving and it was at the request of Allah Ta’ala.”

Fatima straightened up in the chair and began to say something but Moulana continued, “As part of a lengthy Hadith in a book called Targheeb narrated by Ibn Abbas Radiallahu anhuma, the Noble Messenger Sallahu alaihi wasalam said that the night of Eidul Fitr is called Laylatul Jaa’izah – the night of prize giving. And in another Hadith narrated from Abu Hurairah Radiallahu anhu, Rasulallah Salallahu Alaihi wasalam mentioned that on the last night of Ramadaan Allah Ta’ala forgives the believers. The Companions Radiallahu Anhum enquired if that last night was Laylatul Qadr, and the Messenger replied “No, but it is only right that a servant should be given his reward on having completed his service. ”

“So I explained to the children that just as they want to be honoured at the school prize giving and they work hard the whole year so they could get an award – Allah Ta’ala also rewards those servants of His who excelled during the months of Ramadaan and they are honoured with special awards for the Aghirah(Hereafter).”

Fatima’s faced flushed a bright pink and she let out a soft moan, “I didn’t know that”

“The night before Eid,” continued Moulana Yusuf, “is a very important night and we should at least spend part of it in the worship of Allah. Despite all the other work we have, we should not lose the blessing of this night, because this is a such a night that who so ever remains awake on this night in the worship of his Lord, Allah, his heart will not die on the day when hearts will die?”

“What does that mean?” enquired Fatima now curious about this special night.

The Fascist Danger Of BBS Gnanasara

The failure so far to curtail the extremist Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) activities against the Muslim community is a major black mark on the Yahapalana government as it promised to bring peace and reconciliation to the country. It is understood that people’s racial attitudes, hatred or prejudices cannot easily be eliminated just because of a governmental change after an election. However, it is the bounden duty of any government to curtail open extremist activities, spreading hate and incitement against communities. This is more so in the case of a government elected on the promise of good governance, rule of law and justice to all communities and particularly to the vulnerable minorities.

Preaching of Hate

What Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara has demonstrated at the Satyagraha meeting at Mahiyangana on the 21st of this month is not simply expressing his views. It does not cover under the freedom of expression. It is a clear incitement against the Muslim community and a challenge to the rule of law and the law enforcement authorities. He should have been already arrested and brought before the law of the country.

His hate against the Muslim community in this instance is very clear. It has been clear even before and throughout his ‘political career.’ He is simply not a proper Buddhist monk in my opinion but a political activist with extremist views and intensions bordering on a fascist ideology and intent.

Gnanasara is always an emotionally charged person often with the use of filthy language. These are clear signs of a fascist lineage. It is typical of a fascist propagandist to lie, distort or make a mountain out of a molehill. He has said “First they threw rotten eggs at our teachers in Madawala, and then they tried to build a mosque which was taller than the height of the Dalada Maligawa.” Who has given him the sole authority to speak on behalf of the Sinhala people or the Buddhists? Even if he has genuine concerns about the said incidents (which I doubt/dispute), threatening the Muslim community in general is not the way to resolve a dispute. The foremost place for Buddhism cannot be the height of the Dalada Maligawa!

Promotion of Incitement

Most alarming is his threat to enact the ‘phase two of Aluthgama.’ This is where his violent and fascist intent is very clear. After referring to possible ‘intelligence officers’ listening to his speech he said, “go and tell the authorities that if they don’t give a solution to what we demand, we will launch the phase two of Aluthgama.” The demand he placed was to release the two young persons in remand who had apparently intimidated the Muslim businesses in the area to close down their shops during a protest. The said protest had apparently organized because of the ‘pulling down of a Buddhist flag’ by a Muslim youth which should also be condemned and consider provocative. However, this is not a recent incident but more of a pretext.

In his speech, he not only attacked the Muslims but also the Tamils. In his speech, he didn’t fail to recall the ‘proverbial mother’! If anyone has concerns about the people in custody, the right place to go is the courts and not the market place. He has always opted to disregard the laws and law enforcement authorities in the country. In addition to fascism, he also demonstrates a complex strand of anarchism. He cannot simply be considered as a proper Buddhist monk.

His most alarming threat of violence was against the police. Referring to the IGP, he said, “If you can’t handle them, tell us, we will take care of them. We only need about 50 people to take care of them, and we are not scared to go behind bars.” He was referring to the Mahiyangana police as ‘them’ and clearly threatening mob violence as he admitted it would place them behind bars. However, such a threat is sufficient enough to arrest him as a precaution and charge him against incitement.

Why Not to Condemn All Monks

Gnanasara’s outburst, violence or fascism should not be a reason to condemn all Buddhist monks. He is in saffron robes, but he is not a proper Buddhist monk in my opinion. What is alarming however is he is flanked by several other ‘Buddhist monks,’ with or without knowing the gravity of what they do or utter. This is a matter to be untangled preferably within the Buddhist Sangha themselves. It is also apparent that Gnanasara is exploiting business enmities between different communities to promote his fascist cause and in this case at Mahiyangana.
It is not unusual for the clergy of different religions or denominations to get involved in politics, extremist movements or even fascism. However, this cannot be considered ‘healthy for religion or for politics.’ Particularly in Hungary during the rise of Fascism in 1930s, there were numerous Catholic priests who went behind Szalasi’s movement. Ference Szalasi was the leader of the Arrow Cross Party which was responsible for the killing and mayhem of thousands of Jews. This is just an example.

This is also the case today of many Imams and other Islamic religious leaders supporting the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). However, there are many other Imam’s and leaders condemning or distancing themselves from ISIS. Sri Lanka is fortunate to have moderate or ‘Abangan’ Islamic believers and the government or the public should be mindful of not to push the youngsters to the extremes like in some Western countries which could create a virtual hell as a result of these religious polarizations. That is one reason why lawful action should be taken forthwith against Gnanasara and his gang.

Cambodian Example

In the case of curtailing Buddhist monks going for politics or for extremist politics, there were prohibitions in the Cambodian constitution before 1975 forbidding Buddhist monks even in voting. I think it was influenced by the views of Prince Norodom Sihanouk of that time. However this position changed after the UN inspired new constitution in 1993 without any prohibition. Yet until 2006, the Buddhist Supreme Patriarchs (very much similar to our Sanga Nayakas) banned the Buddhist monks voting or even registering for voting, believing that the ‘monks should not be biased.’

However, in recent times this has changed again. A good number of Buddhist monks are now involved in various social causes like human rights and peace. However, there are no organizations such as the BBS or the 969 Movement of Ashin Wirathu in Mynamar (Burma). This is despite the presence of numerous Cham Muslims or minority Vietnamese in Cambodia. Still the Cambodian Buddhist Supreme Patriarchs hold the moral authority to refrain their respective member monks getting involved in extremist politics or unacceptable ventures contrary to the Buddhist principles. This is part of the Sangha Vinaya (discipline) fairly maintained in Cambodia.

I am not at all advocating a constitutional prohibition of Buddhist monks or other priests getting involved in politics like in pre-1975 Cambodia. However, there should be some constraints within all religions or religious denominations of their clergy men or women getting involved in politics or extremist politics. The case of Gnanasara however is different. He is obviously a potential fascist, who can derail all the good intentions of reconciliation and peace in the country. He is apparently a law breaker and inciter who should be brought before the law.

A Postscript

After finishing the above short peace, I had the occasion to watch an interview of Khaled Abol Naga, the prominent Egyptian actor, producer and the film director over the ABC 24 TV (Australia) this afternoon. When he was asked what he thinks about the reasons for many young people going for the cause of ISIS, he said that “when you leave a small injustice unaddressed, the grievances become accumulated. That is what happened after the creation of Israel neglecting the Palestinians and others.”

“The ISIS however is not the solution but the exacerbation of the problem,” he emphasized. The reason he gave was very common to Buddhism, Christianity or Islam: “hatred begets hatred” (Wairayen Wairaya Nosan Sinde). This is why the rule of law should be administered, for Gnanasara or any other perpetrators, without any hatred or vengeance.




Sadaqatul Fitr (or fitrah) is a Wajib (compulsory charity) which becomes payable on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The Noble Messenger of Allah ( Sallallâhu 'alayhi wasallam) said:

"The fast remains suspended between Heaven and Earth until the fitrah is paid."

Rasulullâh Sallallâhu ‘alayhi wasallam made charity of Fitr compulsory as a purification of fasts from useless talks and vile discourses and also as food for the poor .(Hadith-Abû Dawûd).

Sadaqatul Fitr is wâjib (compulsory) upon all and it is not permissible to delay the payment of fitrah later than the Day of Eid for:

1. Who is alive at dawn on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.

2. On Whom Zakaat is Wajib, or who possesses goods free of debt in excess of his personal needs (e.g. house, clothing, furniture, etc.) to the value upon which Zakaat is obligatory.

3. On the father, on behalf of his minor children.

Points to remember:

It is essential that Sadaqatul Fitr be distributed to the poor and needy Muslim before the Eid Salaah (prayer). However, if this obligation has not been discharged timeously it should be done as soon as possible.

It is preferable to give one’s Sadaqatul Fitr firstly to needy relatives, thereafter to one’s needy neighbours and then to other needy Muslims.

What amount should be paid?

The amount of Sadqatul Fitr is 1.633kg of wheat or 3.266kg of barley or the equivalent in cash.

An eye witness recounts, “I witnessed what happened. After the procession when the rioting began I called the police stations that administer the areas. When I called the Matugama police station, they told me that the OIC was not in. The Welipanna police told me that they had only one vehicle and didn’t have personnel. Other police stations were silent. When all this happened the police were made to act deaf and blind. The Police have consistently acted deaf and blind to the actions of Gnanasara Thera leading up to this violence” – UNP MP Palitha Thewarapperuma.
The precursor to the pogrom of June 15 and 16 of 2014, was the spewing of hate filled anti-muslim language by the so called disciples of the Buddha. The demagogic ranting arousing Sinhalese chauvinism, buddhistic fervour and racist nationalism from the robed monk was the perfect cocktail of adrenalin to the listening Sinhala audience. People both from the area and those mobilised from far away places were present.
The next two days bore testimony to the carnage perpetrated by these thug monks cruelly supported by the misled Sinhalese people who unfortunately, pay blind obeisance to these elements masquerading in the saffron robes. If the doctrine of Karma has any true sense in the consciousness of these criminals, then they need to fear the inescapable repercussion they will have to face. The immutable Law of Karma will be looking at the lies uttered, the provocative speech, the wrong intention, the wrong speech, the incitement for evil conduct, the destruction of property and the killing and injuring of innocent people.Attorney at Law Shiraz Noordeen and his team of  lawyers

Monks Consummate In Virtue
To reflect on Buddha’s discourse with King Ajatusattu where the Buddha explained how a monk is consummate in virtue is profoundly educative, in this instance. Some relevant excerpts of this long discourse read as follows:
“Abandoning the taking of life, he abstains from the taking of life. He dwells scrupulous, merciful, compassionate for the welfare of all living beings. This is part of his virtue”.
“Abandoning false speech, he abstains from false speech. He speaks the truth, holds to the truth, is firm, reliable, no deceiver of the world. This, too, is part of his virtue”.
“Abandoning divisive speech he abstains from divisive speech. …… Thus reconciling those who have broken apart or cementing those who are united, he loves concord, delights in concord, enjoys concord, speaks things that create concord. This, too, is part of his virtue.
“Abandoning abusive speech, he abstains from abusive speech. He speaks words that are soothing to the ear, that are affectionate, that go to the heart, that are polite, appealing and pleasing to people at large. This, too, is part of his virtue”. (Samaññaphala Sutta: The Fruits of the Contemplative Life translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu).
This holy discourse was misinterpreted by these holy thugs with the following substitutions :
The abandoning of taking of life; Substituted with killing, maiming and injuring.
The abandoning of false speech; Substituted with the utterance of blatant lies, distortion and misinformation.
The abandoning of deception; Substituted with misleading people by gross deception.
The abandoning of divisive speech; Substituted with hatred and venomous speech dividing racial communities.
The abandoning of abusive speech; Substituted with boorish, uncouth and abusive speech.
Substituting reconciliation and unity with division and disunity.
The buddhistic virtues of mercy and compassion to these miscreants meant malevolence and vengeance. All perpetrated by taking unscrupulous advantage of the robe they don and in the name of Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism.
The Dumb Media
The acts of violence were perpetrated under the very nose of the Police and the STF who knew very well that they had no authority to interfere. Fearing reprisals from the then government, many were reluctant spectators of this violence. Even the Mahanayakes were surprisingly silent at the himsa (violence) perpetrated by those who profess ahimsa (Non-violence).
On the day of the pogrom in Aluthgama the media that makes so much noise today were like tamed pets. A highly placed official had informed editors of news and print media in Sri Lanka to desist from reporting the ground situation prevailing in Aluthgama. Colombo Telegraph was brave enough to at least report to the public the issuance of such a suppression of information order by the government (CT, 15.06.2014). The gymnastics that the media does today was never seen during that period. The right to information and freedom of media is limited in their minds to a set agenda even in today’s environment, barring a few media institutions.
The days following the riots, quoting unnamed police sources BBC Sinhala service reported that Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) V. Indran, who had refused to release the 13 suspects arrested over the Aluthgama clash, is facing serious threats to his life.
Shame Upon Us
Since the end of the war in 2009, the prevailing triumphalist ego made these Sinhala Buddhist nationalist forces to look down upon the other minority communities with disdain. To the extent that they did not even hesitate to trample upon the religious liberties of the minorities. The continuing harassment by these thugs by physical attacks on persons both Muslims and Christians, destruction of property of Mosques and Churches, threats and intimidation, hate campaigns and unfounded false propaganda against the religions of Christianity and Islam all went on unchecked.
Sri Lanka as a nation claiming to be the guardians of Theravada Buddhism was put to shame internationally after the Aluthgama incident. The riots slung mud on the stature of the respectable monks of the Sasana. They embarrassed a whole host of the decent, honourable and kind hearted Sinhalese people. They provided fodder to those waiting to pin down Sri Lanka in the international fora. So much for their parochial idealism!
Karmic Revenge
There is, however, a positive side to this narrative. From the minorities point of view Aluthgama was the Achilles heel of the Rajapaksa regime. Aluthgama was a sort of culmination of a spate of unabated attacks on Muslim places of religious worship and Muslim businesses.
Karma takes sweet revenge. Aluthgama also greatly contributed to get rid of a regime that was marching towards a dictatorship inebriated with power. Thus it was the good riddance to bad rubbish. Today, there is a sigh of relief with the Rule of Law gradually establishing itself. Cases have been filed against the accused monks for their actions with impunity. Cases filed against other violators of the law.
The case filed in the Supreme Court against the OIC Aluthgama on the torture and illegal arrest of a Muslim youth in the aftermath of the riots, was concluded yesterday (14.06.2016). The crime was that he had allegedly uttered the word ‘abasaranai’ to a lady. The OIC tendered an unconditional apology before Chief Justice Sripavan to the Petitioner Mohamed Asmi.
Unrelated to Aluthgama but related to the spate of violence and hate campaign was another case heard today (15.06.2016) at the Colombo Magistrate Court. Charges had been filed by the Police under Section 410 and 291 of Penal Code against five accused for causing damage to the Borella Jumma Masjid. The accused had tendered an unconditional apology and were ordered to pay compensation. Mr. Shiraz Noordeen appearing for the Trustees of the Borella Masjid said that Islam is a religion of peace and in view of the need for coexistence and as a goodwill gesture towards the other communities and religions, they agreed to the settlement.
This would not have been possible under the pseudo ‘Dutugemunu’s’ regime.
So, is this all? Is everything hunky dory now. The reply is a reverberating, “No”. There is a long way to go to cleanse the minds of the bureaucracy, the Police, the racist elements, the violent prone monks. The two recent mosque incidents in Kandy and in Bhatiya Road, Dehiwala are classic examples that this has as yet not become the so called Wonder of Asia.
If we do not understand what is coexistence, equality before the law, the rule of law, religious liberty, respecting the space of the other and tolerance we are in for certain disaster as a nation. No racism, no Sinhala buddhist nationalism, no chauvinistic rhetoric will be of any help to this beautiful island of ours. Shake off the dust and learn to live together folks. The call includes those in robes too.

The threat of repeating Aluthgama is tantamount to admission of responsibility for the pogrom of Aluthgama on 15 June in 2014


I have been accused by many in comments to my articles that I continue to write about the pogrom in Aluthgama and Muslims while the Tamils have had to undergo State terrorism during the 30-year ethnic conflict. For them, the two deaths and billions worth of damage is minor compared to the death of over 200,000 people and trillions worth of damage during the long-drawn ethnic violence against the Tamil population. 

While none can justify another, it is important that we as a nation learn to deal with our differences and live as a strong Sri Lankan community, celebrating our religious and cultural diversity. No one, not even Buddhist monks, should be allowed to act with impunity and to cause violence or take the law into their own hands.



Saffron violence

Sri Lanka has seen in recent history thugs in saffron robes who don’t respect the laws of the land and who act with impunity, leaving a trail of destruction, not only material but also destroying good relations between communities. Successive governments continue to either encourage or at least look away while these so-called priests engage in hate and violence. 

There is an urgent need to reach out to the moderate Buddhists who do not subscribe to this saffron violence. The majority of peace loving Buddhists in this country should act to stem religious hate and violence and ensure that law and order prevail, since Sri Lanka is a nation that prides in its rich cultural traditions and Buddhist values. 

Just two years after the violence that caused death and destruction to Muslim lives, businesses and property worth billions of rupees in Aluthgama and Beruwala, the Bodu Bala Sena’s call in Mahiyangana on 21 June for a repeat of Aluthgama is a dangerous threat to peace for all Sri Lankans. This time, the threat from Ven. Gnanasara and the Bodu Bala Sena is not targeted just at the Muslims, but also at the Police and Judiciary. 

He demands that the Police and Judiciary release two youth who were arrested for intimidating businesses to close their shops to protest against a previous incident involving an intoxicated Muslim youth who had pulled down a Buddhist flag. He and his supporters around him threaten that failure to comply with their demand would force them to take the law in to their own hands and get the youth released with mob violence. 

Ven. Gnanasara clearly states that this could be the next phase to the violence in Aluthgama. The threat of repeating Aluthgama is tantamount to admission of responsibility for the pogrom of Aluthgama on 15 June in 2014

Hate campaign restarted

The Bodu Bala Sena has restarted its hate campaign against the Muslims after a lapse of about a year and a half since the electoral defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2015. The BBS continues to bundle various incidents and issues including an internal rift between teachers, old boys and the Principal of Madeena Muslim Maha Vidyalaya, in Madawala Kandy. 

Some parents and old boys of the school had thrown rotten eggs at the Muslim Principal of the school where a Sinhala teacher had sided with the school head. This incident has been portrayed as a communal rift between the Sinhala and Muslim teachers when the Principal himself is a Muslim and the Sinhala teacher had sided with him. 

The local Police had intervened and warned all parties to refrain from any form of violence, and the matter was resolved. Yet, Ven. Gnanasara and the Bodu Bala Sena are presenting this as an assault on a Sinhala teacher, while the target of the old boys and parents had been the Muslim Principal.

Buddhist extremists led by some monks had also prevented the establishment of aMuslim primary school in Dambawinna, Welimada. The Welimada Muslim Maha Vidyalaya, located in the heart of Welimada town, had to expand due to the growing educational needs of the local Tamil and Muslim population. The school decided to shift its junior section to a separate location with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the Government had allocated the land in Dambawinna. 

A ceremony was organised to lay the foundation stone for the new building by the Uva Province Chief Minister Sammara Sampath Dassanayake, but a small group of Buddhist extremists led by a few young monks prevented it. They protested, stating that this area was allocated for Government offices, which led to unnecessary tension in the area between the two communities. The Chief Minister of the area confirmed that the Education Ministry had allocated the land for the school.

Shifting BBS allegiance

The Bodu Bala Sena recently accused the two sons of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Namal and Yoshitha to have caused the defeat of the Rajapaksa presidency. The sudden blaming of the Rajapaksas is interesting and is seen as an attempt at shifting BBS allegiance to the Maithri-Ranil administration, especially when the Joint Opposition is at the Government with its rhetoric of government failures. How much of the BBS bait the Maithri-Ranil Government will swallow is yet to be seen.

The continued hate of extremists against minority communities is a major threat to peace and development in the country. The Geneva resolutions and the support of the international community towards lasting peace in Sri Lanka should not be undermined. The Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC), who continued to support the Sri Lankan State against the various resolutions brought by the West and the USA should not be alienated. 

The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka has been demanding a special commission of inquiry to the hate campaign against the Muslims and evangelical Christians and punish as appropriate the perpetrators. It has had no response from the Government since January 2015. It has also continued to maintain that anyone breaking the law should be taken to task within the framework of the law, and that vigilante groups shouldn’t be the ones who take the law into their own hands, which will demean the Police and the Judiciary and cause a breakdown in law and order.

It is time that we as a nation came together to meet the development challenges of our nation and help usher in an era of peace and prosperity. Towards this, every citizen will have to make his or her own contribution. The peace-loving citizens should ensure that extremism in any form or from any religion should be eliminated.

නිෂ්පාදනය නම් දැවැන්ත යාන්ත්‍රණය ක්‍රියාත්මක වන්නේ කම්කරු ශ්‍රමය නම්, කුඩා දැති රෝදයන්ගේ සාමූහික ක්‍රියාකාරීත්වය තුළිනි. ලෝකය ඉදිරියට තබන සෑම පියවරක් පාසාම කවර හෝ ශ්‍රමිකයෙකුගේ වෙහෙස මහන්සිය විසින් වැගිරූ දහදිය කඳුළක තෙතමනය සලකුණුව තිබේ.

මේ දිනවල වඩාත් කතාබහට ලක්වන චරිතයක් වන විපක්ෂ නායක ආර්. සම්පන්දන් මෙවර මුහුණට මුහුණ හමුවේ.



● ඔබේ ෆෙඩරල් කතාව සමාජයේ දැඩි විවාදයට ලක්වෙලා. කොටි සංවිධානයේ සටනත් ඔබ සාධාරණීකරණය කරනවා?
රටේ ජනතාව ඔක්කොම ඇත්ත දැනගන්න ඕන. සිංහල වෙන්න පුළුවන් දෙමළ වෙන්න පුළුවන් මුස්ලිම් වෙන්න පුළුවන් හැම දෙනාම ඇත්ත දැනගන්න ඕන. යුද්ධය හේතුවක් නැතුව පටන් ගත්තේ නෑනේ. ඒකට හේතුවක් තිබුණා. දෙමළ ජනතාව බලෙන් කිසිම දෙයක් ඉල්ලුවේ නෑ.දෙමළ ජනතාවට කීප සැරයක්ම ප්‍රචණ්ඩත්වයට මුහුණ දෙන්න සිද්ධ වුණා. අපි මේ ප්‍රශ්නය සාමයෙන් විසඳගන්න උත්සාහ කළා. බණ්ඩාරනායක අගමැතිතුමා අපේ නායක චෙල්වනායගම් සමග 1957 එකඟතාවයකට ආවා. ඒකත් එක්ක අපි හිතුවා මේ ප්‍රශ්නය ඉවරවෙයි කියලා. ඒත් ඒ ගිවිසුම හරියට ක්‍රියාත්මක කරන්න බැරිවුණා. 1965 ඩඞ්ලි සේනානායක අගමැතිතුමා අපේ චෙල්වනායගම් මහත්තයා එක්ක එකඟතාවයකට ආවා. ඒකත් හරි ගියේ නෑ. එදා ඉඳලා ගත්තු උත්සාහයන් කීපයක්ම හරි ගියේ නෑ. දිගටම දෙමළ ජනතාවට හිරිහැර සිද්ධ වුණා.

මේ දේවල් උත්සන්න වෙලා තමයි යුද්ධය පටන් ගත්තේ. අපේ මිනිස්සු ගුටි කාගෙන හිටියා කාලයක්. යුද්ධය පටන් ගත්ත කාරණාවත් තිබුණා. සමගියෙන් කටයුතු කරන්න හදපු අවස්ථාවල එහෙම කළා නම් යුද්ධයක් පටන් ගන්නේ නෑ.

ඔය ප්‍රවෘත්ති සාකච්ඡාවේදීම මම කිව්වා මීට පස්සේ අපට “වයලන්ස්” එපා කියලා. යුද්ධයත් කළා. ඒක දැන් ඉවරයි. ආපහු අපට යුද්ධයක් එපා කියලා මම පැහැදිළිවම කිව්වා. ඒ ටික මාධ්‍යවල ගියේ නෑ. මම කියපු දෙයින් කෑල්ලයි හයිලයිට් වුණේ. ඒක නිසා තමයි මිනිස්සු මගේ කතාවට කලබල වෙලා තියෙන්නේ. එල්ටීටීඊ එක යම් හේතුවක් උඩ පටන් ගත්තත් ඒ අය වැරදි වැඩ ගොඩක් කළා. ඒක නිසා තමයි එයාලා පරාජය වුණෙත්. ඒ අය මානව හිමිකම්වලට ගරු කළේ නෑ. ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදයට ගරු කළේ නෑ. මම ඒකත් පැහැදිලිවම කියනවා. මම කියන්නේ ආපහු අපට යුද්ධයක් එපා. අපි ඒකට කැමැති නෑ. දැන් අපිට ඕන සාමයෙන් සමගියෙන් එකඟතාවයෙන් වැඩ කරන්න.


● ෆෙඩරල්වලින් මෙහා සතුටක් නැද්ද ඔබලට?
අපිට ෆෙඩරල්ම ඕන කියලා අපි කියන්නේ නෑ. ලෝකයේ ගොඩක් රටවල්වල ෆෙඩරල් ක්‍රමය තියෙනවා. ෆෙඩරල් ක්‍රමය නිසා විවිධ භාෂා කතා කරන අය එකට එකතුවෙලා ජීවත් වන රටවල් තියෙනවා. ඒ රටවල්වල කිසිම ප්‍රශ්නයක් නෑ. නයිජීරියාව, ස්විට්සර්ලන්තය, කැනඩාව, ඕස්ටේ්‍රලියාවෙ, ඉන්දියාවෙ වගේ  රටවල මේ ක්‍රමය තමයි තියෙන්නේ. ඒක නිසා අපිත් මේකට කැමතියි. ඒත් අපි බලහත්කාරයෙන් ෆෙඩරල් ඉල්ලන්නේ නෑ. අපි කවුරුත් සාකච්ඡා කරලා එකඟතාවයෙන් තමයි මේක ගන්න ඕන. දෙමළ ජනතාවත් එහෙම දේකට කැමැතියි. බණ්ඩාරනායක මහත්තය පිටරට ඉඳලා ලංකාවට ආවට පස්සේ එයා කිව්වා මේ රටට හොඳ ෆෙඩරල් කියලා. එයා ඒ කාලේ තිබුණු “මෝර්නින් ලීඩර්” කියන පත්තරේට ආටිකල් හයක් ලිව්වා මේ රටට ගැලපෙන්නේ ෆෙඩරල් ක්‍රමය  කියලා. අපිට කලින් බණ්ඩාරනායක මහත්තයා මේක කිව්වේ. ඩොනමෝර් කොමිෂන් එක මෙහේ ආපු වෙලාවෙ උඩරට නායකයො ගිහිල්ලා කිව්වා මේ රටට ෆෙඩරල් ක්‍රමයක් ඕන කියලා. ඒ 1929දී විතර. එතකොට අපි ෆෙඩරල් ගැන හිතලවත් නෑ. මේ අයත් රට බෙදන අදහසින් නොවෙයි ෆෙඩරල් ක්‍රමයත් ඉල්ලුවේ.


● ඔබේ මේ ප්‍රකාශය නිසා කලබලයට පත්වුණ අය කියන්නේ ප්‍රභාකරන්ගෙයි ඔබෙයි වෙනසක් නෑ කියලා?
එහෙම කියන එක වැරදියි. අපි දෙන්නා අතරෙ හුඟක් වෙනස්කම් තියෙනවා. මම යුද්ධයක් ගැන කතා කරන්නේ නෑ. මම කියන්නේ හැම දෙනාගෙම එකඟතාවය මත සිද්ධ වෙන්න ඕන දෙයක් ගැන. මම කවදාවත් රට කඩන්න රට බෙදන්න යෝජනා කරන්නේ නෑ. විනාසයකින් තොරව සිද්ධ විය යුතු දෙයක් ගැනයි මම කියන්නේ. එකිනෙකාට ගෞරව කරන සමාජයක් අපට ඕන. හැම දෙනාගෙම අයිතිවාසිකම්වලට අපි ගෞරව කරන්න ඕන.


● ඔබ විපක්ෂනායකකමෙනුත් අයින් විය  යුතුයි කියලා තවත් සමහරු කියනවා?
ඒක මගේ පක්ෂයට අයිති දෙයක්. විපක්ෂ නායකකම මම බලෙන් අරගත්තු දෙයක් නොවෙයි. අපට පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ තියෙන ෂීට් ගානට අනුව තමයි විපක්ෂනායකකම ලැබුණේ. ඒක අපට අයිති දෙයක්. ඒකට කාටවත් ඇඟිල්ල දික්කරන්න බෑ. මමයි පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ වැඩිම කාලයක් විපක්ෂෙ ඉන්න කෙනා. මම කවදාවත් ආණ්ඩුවලට එකතු වෙලා නෑ. ඒක නිසා මගේ විපක්ෂනායකකම ගැන කවුරුවත් කලබල වෙන්න ඕනකමක් නෑ. සිංහල ජනතාවත් හාමුදුරුවරුනුත් අනිත් අයත් මේ ඇත්ත දැනගන්න ඕන.


● මේ ආණ්ඩුවෙන් ෆෙඩරල් ලබාගන්න පුළුවන් හින්දා මේ ආණ්ඩුව වෙනස් කරන්න යන්න එපා කියලා ඔබ කියල තිබුණා?
එහෙම කතාවක් මම කිව්වේ නෑ.


● එහෙම කතාවක් ඔබ කිව්වා කියලා මාධ්‍ය වාර්තා කරලා තිබුණා?
ඒක වැරදි ප්‍රවෘත්තියක්. මම ඒ වගේ දෙයක් කිව්වේ නෑ. මේ ආණ්ඩුව පෙරළන්න එපා කියලා මම කිව්වේ නෑ. මේ ආණ්ඩුව මේ ප්‍රශ්නයට විසඳුමක් ගේන්න පුළුවන් කියන විදියට හැසිරෙනවා. ඒක අපට විස්වාසයි කියලයි මම කිව්වේ.


● ඔබට මේ ආණ්ඩුවෙන් වැඩිපුර විශ්වාස මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන ජනාධිපතිද රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ අගමැතිද?
ඇයි ඔබ ඒ වගේ ප්‍රශ්නයක් මගෙන් අහන්නේ. රටේ ජනාධිපති මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන. එයා තමයි රටට වෙනස්කමක් ගෙනාවෙ. එයා තමයි දැන් රටේ පළවෙනි නායකයා. ඒක අපි පිළිගන්න ඕන. මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන මහත්තයා මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහත්තයා පරාජය කරපු නිසා තමයි රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ මහත්තයා අගමැති වුණේ. මේ දෙගොල්ලොම එකතුවෙලා රටේ ප්‍රශ්නවලට විසඳුම් ගේන්න ඕන කියලා තමයි අපි කියන්නේ.


● විපක්ෂ නායකයා වුණාට ඔබ ආණ්ඩුව වර්ණනා කරන එකනේ කරන්නේ?
නෑ, අපි විපක්ෂයෙ රාජකාරිය කරනවා. පහුගිය බජට් එක ගෙනාපු වෙලාවෙ අපි ඒක විවේචනය කළා. අපි “කරප්ශන්” ගැන කතා කරනවා. අපි ආණ්ඩුව සුද්ද කරන්නේ නෑ. අපි අපේ ප්‍රශ්න ගැන විතරක් නොවෙයි කතා කරන්නේ. මේක අපේ රට. මේ රට මටත් අයිතියි. මම මේ රටට අයිති පුද්ගලයෙක්. ඒ හැඟීම මට තියෙනවා. දිනේෂ් ගුණවර්ධනලා ඔච්චර පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ කෑ ගහනවා. එයාලා උතුරේ ප්‍රශ්න ගැන කතා කරනවද? උතුර කියන්නෙත් මේ රටේ කොටසක්.


● විපක්ෂනායකයා විදියට විපක්ෂයේ ප්‍රධාන සංවිධායක අනුර කුමාර දිසානායක එක්ක කොහොමද ගනුදෙනුව?
මමයි ඒක එයාට දුන්නේ. ඕන නම් අපේ පක්ෂයේ කෙනෙකුට ම ඒක දෙන්න තිබුණා. අපිට විපක්ෂ නායකකම හම්බවෙච්ච නිසා විපක්ෂය නියෝජනය කරන තවත් පක්ෂයක් විදියට ජනතා විමුක්ති පෙරමුණට විපක්ෂයේ ප්‍රධාන සංවිධායකකම ලැබෙන්න ඕන කියල අපිත් හිතුවා. එයාලත් ඒක බාරගත්තා. අපි හොඳ සහයෝගයෙන් වැඩ කරගෙන යනවා. පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ මගේ විපක්ෂ නායක කාර්යාලයේ අනුරටත් වෙනම කාමරයක් තියෙනවා.


● උතුර ගැන උතුරේ මහ ඇමැති විග්නේෂ්වරන් එහෙමත් විවිධ කතා කියනවා. ඔබලා අතරේ මේ ගැන විවාදයක් තියෙනවද?
විග්නේෂ්වරන්ට ඕන දෙයක් කියන්න අයිතියක් එයාට තියෙනවා. විග්නේෂ්වරනුත් රට බෙදන්න කියලා ඉල්ලන්නේ නෑ. එයාත් යුද්ධයත් පටන් ගන්න කියලා කියන්නේ නෑ. එයත් රට කැඩෙන්න කතා කරන්නේ නෑ. අපේ කතාවල එක එක මට්ටම් තියෙනවා. මම කියන කතාවට සමාන නෑ විග්නේෂ්වරන් කියන එකට. දැන් ජනාධිපතිතුමා කියන කතාවට වඩා අගමැතිතුමා කියන දේවල්වල වෙනස්කම් තියෙනවනේ. ඉදිරියේ අපේ මේ කතා හැම එකක්ම සලකලා හොඳ තීරණයකට එන්න පුළුවන් වෙයි.


● සුරේෂ් ප්‍රේමචන්ද්‍රන් ඒ ඔබේ කතාවට විරුද්ධයි වගේ?
එයා ගිය සැරේ මන්ත්‍රීතුමෙක් වෙලා හිටියා. මේ සැරේ එයාට පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට එන්නත් බැරි වුණා. එයාටත් ඕන දෙයක් කියන්න ඕන මතයක් දරන්න අයිතියක් තියෙනවා. ඒක ප්‍රශ්නයක් නෑ. අපිට ඒක නවත්වන්නත් බෑ. මේ හැම කතා ගැනම අන්තිමට ජනතාව තීන්දුවක් ගනීවි.


● ඔබ සුරේෂ් ප්‍රේමචන්ද්‍රට කිව්වද යාපනේදී ටී.එන්.ඒ. එක විවේචනය කරන්න එපා කියලා?
නෑ, මම එහෙම දෙයක් එයාගෙන් ඉල්ලුවෙ නෑ. මම කිව්වෙ අපි ඔක්කොම එකතුවෙලා වැඩ කරමු කියලා. අපි එක අදහසකට එමු කියලයි මම කිව්වෙ. මම කවදාවත් කිව්වෙ නෑ එයාට අරක කියන්න එපා මේක කියන්න එපා කියලා. මට එහෙම කියන්න බෑනේ.


● උතුරේ ජනතාවගේ ඇත්ත ප්‍රශ්නවලට ඔබලා උත්තර හොයනවද ඇත්තටම?
ඇයි නැත්තේ. හුඟක් දේවල් ගැන අපි බලනවා. තව විසඳගන්න හුඟක් දේවල් තියෙනවා. මේ ආණ්ඩුව ආවට පස්සේ යම් යම් පියවර ගත්තා. අපි ඒවට සහයෝගය දෙනවා. අපිත් ආණ්ඩුවට මේ සම්බන්ධව යෝජනා ඉදිරිපත් කරනවා. යුද්දෙ ඉවර වුණාට පස්සේ මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ උතුරේ ප්‍රශ්නවලට කිසිම දෙයක් කළේ නෑ. මම යුද්දෙ ඉවර වුණාට පස්සේ පාර්ලිමේන්තු කණ්ඩායම එක්ක උතුරේ සංචාරය කරලා අවශ්‍ය දේවල් හොයලා බැලුවා. ඊට පස්සෙ මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂගෙන් මම ඉල්ලුවා උතුරේ ගෙවල් හදන්න ඉක්මන් පියවරක් ගන්න කියලා. එයා මගෙන් ඇහුවෙ “කොහේ තියෙන සල්ලිද මට ඔය ගෙවල් හදන්න” කියලා. පස්සෙ අපි ඉන්දියාවෙ ගිය වෙලාවක මන්මෝහන්සිං අගමැති තුමා එක්ක කතා කරලා ගෙවල් පනස් දාහක් හදලා දුන්නා.


● ඔබ උතුරේ මිනිස්සුන්ගේ ප්‍රශ්න ගැන මෛත්‍රීපාල ජනාධිපතිතුමා එක්ක නිතර කතාබහ කරනවද?
ඔව්, අපි ඒ ගැන කතා කරනවා.


● පහුගිය දවස්වල රටේ තැනින් තැන බෝම්බ එහෙම අහුවෙනවා අපි දැක්කා. මේ සංඥාව මොකක්ද?
අපි නැවත නැවතත් කියන්නේ කිසිම මනුස්සයෙකුට ආපහු       “වයලන්ස්” එපා කියලා. කවුරුවත් ඒකට කැමැති නෑ. උතුරු නැගෙනහිර කවුරුවත් ආපහු “වයලන්ස්” පටන් ගන්න උත්සාහයක් ගන්නවා කියලා අපි හිතන්නෙ නෑ. තැන තැන තියෙන ආයුධ වරින් වර හම්බ වෙනවා. තවත් හම්බවෙයි. මීට කලිනුත් හම්බ වුණා. ආයුධ කොච්චර පාවිච්චි වෙච්ච රටක්ද මේක. මිනිස්සු මැරුණට ආයුද ඉතුරු වුණා. යුද්දෙන් පස්සෙ තැන තැන තියෙන ආයුධ හම්බවෙන එක සාමාන්‍ය දෙයක්. මේ හම්බවෙන ආයුධ ගැන දැන් එළියට නිව්ස් එක යනවා. සමහරු ඒක තියෙනවටත් වඩා ලොකු කරනවා.


● ඔබට මේ ආණ්ඩුව ගැන ලොකු විශ්වාසයක් තියෙන පාටයි. එහෙම නම් පුළුවන් නේ ඇමැතිකම් අරගෙන උතුරට වැඩ කරන්න.
මේ දැන් ඇතිවෙලා තියෙන සංවාදය ඉවර වුණාට පස්සේ එවැනි තීරණයකට එන්නත් පුළුවන්.


● ඒ කියන්නේ ඉස්සරහට ඇමැතිකම් ගන්නවා?
හොඳ තීන්දුවක් ආවොත් රට වෙනුවෙන් එකතු වෙලා වැඩ කරන්න අපි සූදානම්. අද වෙනතුරු නම් මම ඇමැතිකම් අරගෙන නෑ. කීප වතාවක් මගෙන් ඉල්ලුවා ඇමැතිකම් ගන්න කියලා. ඒ කිසි වෙලාවක මම ඇමැතිකම් ගත්තේ නෑ. හැබැයි මේ ප්‍රශ්නයට තීන්දුවක් ගෙනාවට පස්සෙ ඔක්කොම දෙනා එකතුවෙලා රට වෙනුවෙන් වැඩ කරන්න ලෑස්තියි.


● ඔබෙන් පස්සෙ ටී.එන්.ඒ. එකේ නායකයා කවුද?

● සුමන්තිරන්ට ඒක දෙනවද?

● සාම්පූර්වලට යෝජිත බලාගාරයට ඔබලා විරුද්ධයි නේද?
මෙච්චර කල් ඒ ගැන අපට ප්‍රශ්නයක් තිබුණෙ නෑ. හැබැයි දැන් මිනිස්සු කියනවා ඒකෙන් යම් යම් ප්‍රශ්න ඇති වෙනවා කියලා. ඒ ගැන දැන් අපි හොයා බලනවා. මේ ගැන ආණ්ඩුව එක්ක අපි සාකච්ඡා කරලා හොඳ විසඳුමකට එන්න ඕන. අපිට විදුලි බලයත් ඕන. හැබැයි මිනිස්සුන්ට ඒකෙන් අහිතකර ප්‍රතිඵල ලැබෙනව නම් ඒ ගැනත් හිතන්න ඕන. මොකද මේ මිනිස්සු කාලයක් තිස්සේ හොඳටම කරදරවලට මුහුණදීපු පිරිසක්.


● ටී. එන්. ඒ. එක හැම තිස්සෙම හිතන්නේ උතුර ගැන විතරමද?
නෑ, අපි මුළු රට ගැනම හිතනවා. අපේ පක්ෂයේ මෙම්බර්ස්ලා එන්නේ උතුරු නැගෙනහිරෙන් විතරයිනේ. ඒක නිසා උතුරු නැගෙනහිර ගැන අපි හිතන්න ඕන. ඒත් අපි හිතන්නේ මේක අපේ රට විදියට. උතුර හෝ නැගෙනහිර විතරක් ඉස්සරහට යන්න බෑ. ඉස්සරහට යන්න ඕන රටක් විදියට. මම කියන්නේ උතුර නැගෙනහිර කියල වෙන්කරල කතා කරන්න එපා. එහෙම හිතනකම් බෙදිලා කියන හැඟීම එනවා.


● ආපහු එල්.ටී.ටී.ඊ.ය හිස ඔසවන්නේ නෑ කියලා ඔබට සහතික වෙන්න පුළුවන්ද?
ඒකට අපේ ජනතාව කවදාවත් ඉඩ දෙන්නෙ නෑ. අපිත් ඉඩ දෙන්නෙ නෑ ඒකට. අපි ත්‍රස්තවාදයට විරුද්ධයි. මම පැහැදිළිවම සහතික වෙනවා. ආපහු එල්.ටී.ටී.ඊයෙ නැගිටීමක් වෙන්නේ නෑ කියලා. මම හැම තිස්සෙම ඒක කියනවා.

එක රට ඇතුළෙ හැම ජාතියකටම එකට සමඟියෙන් ඉන්න පුළුවන් පසුබිමක් හදන්න මම ගොඩක් උත්සාහ කරපු කෙනෙක්. මේ ගැන නොයෙක් අවස්ථාවලට මම සහභාගිවෙලා තියෙනවා. මම මේ ගැන නොයෙක් අවස්ථාවල අදහස් ප්‍රකාශ කරලා තියෙනවා. අපේ ඒ බලාපොරොත්තුව ඉෂ්ට වුණොත් ඒක ලොකු ජයග්‍රහණයක්. රටට පළමුවෙන්ම දැන් ඕන ඒක. මම මේ අවුරුදු 37ක පාර්ලිමේන්තු කාලය තුළ රටට දෙයක් කළා කියලා මම හිතනවා. අපේ පක්ෂයෙත් මගෙත් බලාපොරොත්තුව කාටත් සංතෝෂයෙන් ජීවත් වෙන්න පුළුවන් රටක්.




Will take tough decisions in the future - President


President Maithripala Sirisena says that the government will take tough decisions in the future in the interest of the country and its citizens.   He was answering questions from media organizations in an interview telecast live tonight on all non-state media channels.

ගාල්ලේ පැවැත්වෙන ශ්‍රීලනිප මැයි රැලියට සාධාරණ හේතු නොදක්වා පැමිණ නැති අය සම්බන්ධයෙන් විනය ක්‍රියා මාර්ග ගන්නා බව ශ්‍රී ලංකා නිදහස් පක්ෂයේ මහ ‍ලේකම් දුමින්ද දිසානායක දැනටමත් ප්‍රකාශ කර ඇත. එමෙන්ම මේ වන විටත් ඒකාබද්ධ විපක්ෂයට සහය දක්වන මන්ත්‍රීවරුන් රැසකගේ ආසන සංවිධායක ධුර අහිමි කර තිබේ.

කිරුළපන රැලියට සහභාගි වන අය සම්බන්ධයෙන් විනය පියවර නොගතහොත් පක්ෂයේ ඉදිරි කටයුතු පවත්වාගෙන යාම දුෂ්කර වනු ඇතැයි ශ්‍රීලනිපයේ ‍‍‍ජ්‍යෙෂ්ඨයන් රැසක් ජනාධිපති මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේනට දැනුම් දී ඇත.
මැයි දිනයෙන් පසු ශ්‍රීලනිප දේශපාලනයේ විශේෂ වෙනස්කම් රැසක් සිදුවනු ඇති බවට ජනාධිපතිවරයා මීට පෙර ප්‍රකාශ කර තිබුණි. එය එසේම සිදුවනු ඇති බවද දේශපාලන ආරංචි මාර්ග සඳහන් කරයි.
මෙම විනය පියවර ගැනීමේදී හිටපු ජනාධිපති මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මහතාද විශේෂ කොට නොසලකා තීරණයක් ගනු ඇතැයිද එම ආරංචි මාර්ග වැඩිදුරටත් සඳහන් කළේය.

පළාත් සභා මහ ඇමැතිවරුන් ඇතුළු පළාත් අමාත්‍ය ධුරවල සංශෝධනයක් ඉදිරි සතිය තුළදී කිරීමට නියමිත බව ශ්‍රී ලංකා නිදහස් පක්ෂ ආරංචි මාර්ග අනාවරණය කරයි. ඒ අනුව ලබන 5 වැනිදා වන විට පළාත් අමාත්‍ය ධුරවල සංශෝධනයක් කරන බව ජනාධිපති මෛත්‍රීපාල සිරිසේන පසුගිය සිකුරාදා ගාල්ලේදී මැයි දින කමිටුව හමුවේදී පවසා තිබේ.
පක්ෂයේ කළ යුතු සංශෝධන මැයි පළමුවැනිදා සිට ආරම්භ කරන බවත් ජනාධිපතිවරයා දැනුම්දී ඇත. තමන් වසර එකහමාරක කාලයක් වන දේ බලා සිටි බවත් එම කාලය තුළදී මෙවැනි පියවරක් නොගත්තේ නොහැකියාව නිසා නොවන බව තේරුම් ගත යුතු බවද ජනාධිපතිවරයා මෙහිදී දැනුම්දී තිබේ


සම්බන්ධන් ඇතුල් වුනේ මහජනතාවගේ ඉඩම්වලට - අගමැති


වර්තමානයේ රට තුළ පවතින මාධ්‍ය නිදහසට විශාලම තර්ජනය එල්ල වන්නේද මාධ්‍ය වෙතින්ම බව අග්‍රාම්‍ය රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ පවසයි.

අගමැතිවරයා ඒ බව කියා සිටියේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා මුස්ලිම් මාධ්‍ය සංසදයේ විසි වන සංවත්සර උළෙල අමතමිනුයි.

අන්තවාදී අදහස් පරාජය කොට සිංහල, දෙමළ, මුස්ලිම් සියලු ජාතීන් එක්ව රට තුළ ස්ථාපිත කළ ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදය සහ නිදහස තවදුරටත් තහවුරු කර ගැනීම සඳහා මාධ්‍ය වෙත විශාල වගකීමක් පැවරෙන බවයි අගමැතිවරයා එහිදී අවධාරණය කළේ.

කෙසේ නමුත් ඇතැම් මාධ්‍ය ආයතන එම වගකීම ඉටු නොකරන බව පවසන අගමැතිවරයා එවැනි මාධ්‍ය ආයතන දැඩි දෝෂ දර්ශනයට ලක් කළේය.

පසුගියදා විපක්ෂ නායක ආර් සම්බන්ධන් කිලිනොච්චියේ හමුදා කඳවුරකට බලහත්කාරයෙන් ඇතුළු වූ බවට එල්ල වන චෝදනා පිළිබඳ අදහස් දක්වමින් අගමැතිවරයා කියා සිටියේ අදාළ ප්‍රදේශයේ පිහිටි සාමාන්‍ය ජනතාවට අයත් ඉඩම්වලට විපක්ෂ නායකවරයා ගොස් ඇති බව තමන්ට හමුදාපතිගෙන් දැන ගැනීමට ලැබුණු බවයි.

ඒකාබද්ධ විපක්‍ෂය

මේ අතර ඒකාබද්ධ විපක්‍ෂය යන නම භාවිත කිරීම වාරණය කිරීමේ හා පාලනය කිරීමේ අභිලාෂයක් රජය සතුව නොමැති බව අග්‍රාමාත්‍ය කාර්යාලය නිකුත් කළ නිවේදනයක සඳහන්.

'රජය අඩු තරමින් මේ සම්බන්ධව අවධානය යොමු කර හෝ සාකච්ඡා කොට හෝ නොමැත.' එම නිවේදනයේ සඳහන් වේ.

එවන් වාතාවරණයක් තුළ පාර්ලිමේන්තු ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ හා ජනමාධ්‍ය අමාත්‍යංශයේ ලේකම්වරයා විසින් ජනමාධ්‍ය වෙත නිවේදනයක් නිකුත් කිරීම සම්බන්ධයෙන් කරුණු විමසා බැලීමට අග්‍රාමාත්‍ය රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ තීරණය කොට ඇති බවයි එම නිවේදනයේ වැඩිදුරටත් දැක්වෙන්නේ.

ඒ අනුව මැයි 02 වනදා පෙරවරුවේ පාර්ලිමේන්තු ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ හා ජනමාධ්‍ය අමාත්‍යවරයා, නියෝජ්‍ය අමාත්‍යවරයා සහ අමාත්‍යංශ ලේකම්වරයා සමග අග්‍රාමාත්‍යවරයා විශේෂ සාකච්ඡාවක් පැවැත්වීමට නියමිත බවයි අග්‍රාමාත්‍ය කාර්යාලය පවසන්නේ.
