The highly controversial Antiterrorism Bill is subject to amendments and changes in Parliament and as such no one should have any fear or feeling of threat from the proposed Bill, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said. Addressing a news conference at the Information Department auditorium, Minister Rajapakshe said the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) passed in 1979 under President J.R. Legislators allied to disputed PM Rajapaksa fight with rivals in second day of clashes

A clash between rival members of the Sri Lankan parliament, in Colombo.

Sri Lanka’s parliament has been disrupted for a second day, with legislators allied to the disputed prime minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa, hurling chairs at police officers and allegedly throwing chilli powder at opposing MPs.

It was the latest violent incident in the crisis that erupted three weeks ago, when the president, Maithripala Sirisena, suddenly announced he had sacked the prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and installed Rajapaksa in his place.

Despite the violence, the pro-Rajapaksa MPs failed to prevent the assembly from passing a no-confidence motion in his leadership, dismissing his government for the second time this week.

Unlike the previous vote, however, Friday’s motion omitted any reference to misconduct on the part of Sirisena. The change indicates the president could recognise the motion this time and agree to terminate Rajapaksa’s leadership.

Rajapaksa’s forces have already said they will reject Friday’s vote. “We say Mahinda Rajapaksa heads the government,” said Dinesh Gunawardena, a Rajapaksa ally. “We shall agitate for elections. The country is in anarchy. The parliament is in anarchy.”

Security was heavy in parliament on Friday after the previous day’s session had to be abandoned when MPs scuffled inside the chamber, requiring one to be hospitalised. One MP, Palitha Thewarapperuma of the United National party, was seen wielding a knife in Thursday’s fray.

Before the session could start, MPs allied to Rajapaksa surrounded the Speaker’s ceremonial chair, shouting protests at the use of knives in Thursday’s brawl.

More than two dozen police officers entered the chamber with their arms linked, trying to escort the Speaker, Karu Jayasuriya, inside along with parliamentary officials in white coats carrying a ceremonial mace.

Advised not to enter the chamber by his security staff, Jayasuriya, 78, responded: “I will enter the chamber for the future generations of Sri Lanka”, a witness to the scene told the Guardian.

As Rajapaksa watched from his chair, his MPs attacked the officers with chairs and books, injuring up to 11. Other legislators tipped the Speaker’s ceremonial chair to the floor and dragged it across the ground.

Taking refuge on a side bench and surrounded by officers, Jayasuriya called for a voice vote on the no-confidence motion in Rajapaksa. A roar erupted across the chamber and the Speaker declared the vote carried by a majority.

Jayasuriya must now formally communicate the result to Sirisena, which he is expected to do later on Friday.

Outside the chamber, MPs Gamini Jayawickrama Perera and Vijitha Herath could be seen rubbing their eyes, with splotches of chilli splattered across their robes.

“They have behaved as beasts, not as human beings,” Herath told reporters outside the chamber.

He wore a large bandage across his forehead, saying he was injured when an opposing lawmaker lobbed a copy of the Sri Lankan constitution at his head.

If recognised by Sirisena, who ultimately commands the country’s armed forces and police, Friday’s no-confidence motion would leave the country without a prime minister.

According to the constitution, Sirisena will need to name a prime minister who he believes can command a majority of parliament’s vote. Wickremesinghe would have the numbers, but the acrimony between he and Sirisena – one of the key factors in sparking the crisis – makes it doubtful he would be chosen.

Also uncertain is how Rajapaksa and his supporters will respond to the result. He tweeted after the vote: “The Speaker’s ad-hoc decisions are the main reason for today’s situation in parliament. The need is to go for a election and lead the way to a stable parliament.”

Wickremesinghe told a press conference on Friday evening it was “a black chapter in our history”.

“I’ve been there when a bomb was thrown … but this is the deliberate breaking up of parliament by a group of people claiming to be the government,” he said.

“Today Sri Lankans have again seen deplorable behaviour by some MPs, unbecoming of them and of their noble institution,” the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, James Dauris, wrote on Twitter. “No parliament can perform its role when its own members stop it from doing so.”

Sri Lanka MPs pass no-confidence vote against new prime minister

Lawmakers show their support for Sri Lanka's ousted prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe during a parliamentary session in Colombo on November 14, 2018.

Colombo, Sri Lanka (CNN)Sri Lankan lawmakers have passed a no-confidence motion against the country's new Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa, declaring his appointment "void and invalid" amid raucous scenes in the country's Parliament.

Supporters of Rajapaksa refused to recognize the vote as legitimate, plunging the country deeper into crisis, as fears grow that the political dispute could spill into wider instability.
The move follows the shock decision last month by President Maithripala Sirisena to sack Ranil Wickremesinghe as prime minister, and replace him with controversial former strongman President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The announcement triggered protests and violence leaving one person dead.
Wickremesinghe denounced Sirisena's attempt to remove him from office and refused to leave the official prime minister's residence, claiming the president does not have the power to take such action.
Sirisena had attempted to prevent a vote of no-confidence by dissolving Parliament until December 7, however, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court overturned the president's controversial decision and ordered an interim order, paving the way for fresh elections.
In a move that showed that he was potentially softening his hard stance, Sirisena invited his ousted Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, leaders of his party and those associated for talks Wednesday evening.
Spokesman Mahinda Samarasinghe declined to comment on the meeting, but told CNN: "The President will act constitutionally and within the framework of the law of the country."
Sri Lanka's former president and newly appointed prime minister Mahinda Rajapakse (C) attends the parliament session in Colombo on November 14, 2018.

Passed by voice, not by name

The passing of the no-confidence motion comes as a major blow to Sirisena, demonstrating that his appointment of Rajapaksa does not have the majority backing of the 225 seat Parliament.
Contrary to the usual practice, notice of the motion was given Wednesday morning and taken up for discussion immediately after.
However, such was the commotion inside the House Wednesday, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya was prevented from taking the vote by name, as is standard, and instead forced to take a vote by voice.
The resolution, which was passed by a majority, was moved by left wing Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka and law maker Vijitha Herath.
The United National Party of ousted Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, the Tamil National Alliance and smaller Muslim parties all supported the no-confidence motion.
Three newly sworn cabinet ministers and a state minister also crossed over to the opposition benches in support. Both Rajapaksa, as well as his ousted predecessor Wickremesinghe were present during the vote.

Instability in Colombo

Violence erupted in the capital at the end of October when crowds loyal to the President attempted to prevent the recently deposed petroleum minister Arjuna Ranatunga from entering a government building in Colombo.
As crowds surged around Ranatunga, a former Sri Lankan cricket captain, the official's bodyguards opened fire, killing one person and injuring three others.
Ranatunga subsequently claimed that his bodyguards opened fire because the crowd was "trying to kill" him.
One bodyguard was nevertheless taken into custody and an investigation is underway, police spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekera confirmed.

Pandemonium in Sri Lankan parliament as MPs hurl books at speaker

Mahinda Rajapaksa supporters throw books, chilli paste and water bottles at speaker to disrupt second confidence vote.

Sri Lanka's parliament descended into chaos for a second day on Friday as legislators supporting newly appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa threw books, chilli paste and water bottles at the speaker to try to disrupt a second no-confidence motion.

The vote went ahead anyway and for a second time, legislators turned against Rajapaksa and his new government, possibly opening the way for the return of Ranil Wickremesinghe as prime minister.

Wickremesinghe was removed by President Maithripala Sirisena late last month and replaced with Rajapaksa, plunging the country into a constitutional crisis.
WATCH: Chaos in Sri Lanka parliament as MPs exchange blows (1:53)

"We have the majority," Wickremesinghe told reporters. "We can form our government and we will act accordingly."
Sirisena is now faced with the choice of either reappointing the man he kicked out only a few weeks ago or allowing the crisis to continue with potentially damaging consequences for the economy.

Rajapaksa supporters poured on to the floor of parliament, surrounding the Speaker's chair, and demanded the arrest of two MPs from Wickremesinghe's party for allegedly bringing knives into the house on Thursday.

An MP from Rajapaksa's Sri Lanka Podujana Peremuna party sat in Speaker Karu Jayasuriya's seat surrounded by more than 20 legislators, delaying the start of proceedings. Rajapaksa loyalists then tried to prevent Jayasuriya from sitting on a second chair brought in by police.

When Jayasuriya started calling out names to know whom MPs supported, Rajapaksa supporters threw the books and chilli paste at him.

Parliament on Wednesday passed the first no-confidence motion against Rajapaksa and his government with the backing of 122 of 225 MPs in a voice vote, followed by a signed document. Sirisena did not accept that result and called for the second vote.

Sirisena dissolved parliament last week and ordered elections to break the deadlock. But the Supreme Court ordered a suspension of that decree on Tuesday until it had heard petitions challenging the move as unconstitutional.

Sources close to the leadership have said Sirisena's decision to sack Wickremesinghe came after the prime minister's party rejected the president's request to back him for a second five-year term in the 2020 presidential elections.

They had also split over whether to back Chinese or Indian investors in various projects, the sources said.

India and Western countries have requested Sirisena act in line with the constitution while raising concerns over Rajapaksa's close ties with China.

Beijing loaned Sri Lanka billions of dollars for infrastructure projects during Rajapaksa's presidency between 2005 and 2015.

Tourism accounts for nearly five percent of the economy and is a key main foreign exchange earner, along with the garment and tea industries and remittances from Sri Lankans working abroad.

TheVirtues of Jumu’ah

(3min read)

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “Friday is the best of days. It was on this day that Hadrat Aadam alayhis salaam was created, it was on this day that he was granted entry into jannah, it was on this day that he was removed from jannah (which became the cause for man’s existence in this universe, and which is a great blessing), and the day of resurrection will also take place on this day. ” (Sahih Muslim)

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “There is such an hour on Friday that if any Muslim makes Dua in it, his Dua will definitely be accepted. ” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “Of all the days, Friday is the most virtuous. It is on this day that the trumpet will be blown. Send abundant Durood upon me on Fridays because they are presented to me on that day. ” The Sahabah Radhiyallahu anhum asked: “O Rasulullah! How will they be presented to you when even your bones will not be present after your death?” Rasulullah (Allah bless him & give him peace) replied: “Allah Ta’ala has made the earth haraam upon the prophets forever . ” (Abu Dawood)

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “The word “shaahid”refers to Friday . There is no day more virtuous than Friday. There is such an hour in this day that no Muslim will make dua in it except that his dua will be accepted. And he does not seek protection from anything except that Allah Ta’ala will grant him protection . ” (Tirmidhi)

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “Friday is the “mother” of all days and the most virtuous in the sight of Allah Ta’ala. In the sight of Allah Ta’ala it has more greatness than Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Ad’haa. ” (Ibn Majah)

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “The Muslim who passes away on the night or during the day of Friday, Allah Ta’ala saves him from the punishment of the grave . ” (Tirmidhi)

On one Friday, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “O Muslims! Allah Ta’ala has made this day a day of eid. So have a bath on this day, whoever has perfume should apply it, and use the miswaak. ” (Ibn Majah)

The Virtues and Importance of Jumu’ah Salaat

Rasulullah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said, “The person who has a bath on Friday, purifies himself as far as possible, applies oil to his hair, applies perfume, leaves for the Musjid, when he arrives at the Musjid he does not sit down by removing anyone from his place, offers as many Nafl salaatsas possible, when the imamdelivers the Khutbah he remains silent – then his sins from the previous Jumu’ah till now will be forgiven. ” (Bukhari)

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “The person who has a bath on Friday and goes early to the Musjid on foot, and not by a vehicle, listens to the Khutbah and does not do any foolish act while it is being delivered, will get the reward of one year’s Ibadah, one year’s fasting, and one year’s Salaat; for every step that he takes. ” (Tirmidhi)

Hadrat Ibn Umar and Abu Hurayrah Radhiyallahu Anhuma narrate that they heard Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) saying, “People should abstain from leaving out Jumu’ah Salaat. If not, Allah Ta’ala will put a seal over their hearts whereby they will fall into severe negligence. ” (Muslim)

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “The person who misses out three jumu’ah’s without any valid reason, Allah Ta’ala puts a seal over his heart.” (Tirmidhi)

Ibn Abbas Radhiyallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said, “The person who leaves out Jumu’ah Salaat without a valid reason is written down as a hypocrite in a book that is protected from any changes and modifications.” (Mishkaat)

In other words, he will be labelled as a hypocrite forever. However, if he repents or Allah forgives him solely out of His mercy, then this is another matter.

A shy introvert can own the social media world from the privacy of their bedrooms. Cloaked by the safety of their remote internet connection they can woo their followers. Their sharp wit and awesome posts will have you hungering for their company and you will be forgiven to believe your own life is just too dull in comparison.

That woman you’re so jealous of used filters and chose her best angle. Basically she’s as beautiful and as ordinary as you. You go back to your mirror and begin to judge and criticize your reflection. You focus on your “flaws” and soon you feel frumpy and unattractive.

You begin to question your unmarried status or your spouses love as it pales in comparison to the loved up posts you see filling your newsfeeds. You are hoodwinked by the “romance” and fall to the floor in despair. Your love life is doomed.
But how often do these very people post about their fights, arguments and irritations with these spouses/partners?

These posts only showcase the glorified side of life. You won’t see them with their mismatched pj’s while they laze on their couches.

The off days where she almost scratched out her partners eyeballs because he fell asleep on the couch watching soccer will never make it to the news feeds.

That selfie that showed the dark shadows under her eyes were deleted. You only saw the cover girl pic with the make up on point.

Human nature will have you envying almost everything and anything but its your common sense that should actually save you from being completely distracted from the reality of life.

The perfect life simply does not exist.

Be happy for your “friends” that have seemingly awesome lives but don’t question your own stupendous life.

Remember, life is what you make of it. So, if you’re unhappy about your own dull life, what are you doing about it?

Ask yourself if you’re taking pics, going out and having “fun” to post, entertain and add to the facade of social media or are you really living an exciting life simply because you really want to have fun.

Not all those that post fun pics are really having fun and those that don’t post aren’t leading dull lives.

Its social media. It’s all about camera, lighting and action. Don’t believe it all.

Not everyone is what they post to be.

Points to assist a declining marriage

Latest

Points to assist a declining marriage

The Hadith questions the manhood of a person who beats his wife up during the day and derives pleasure from her during the night. Good marriages require patience, kindness, humility, sacrifice, empathy, love, understanding, forgiveness, and hard work. Following these basic principles should help any marriage to improve. The essence of them all can be summed up in one sentence: Always treat your spouse the way you would like to be treated.

Amidst busy schedules and tasks on the parts of both women and men, Muslim husbands and wives tend to forget the real reasons behind marriage and likewise the rights of each other. Subsequently, they deprive themselves, their mates and their children of the happiness and tranquility that is the bedrock of a successful family. This unbalanced vision towards a couple’s ideal relationship is bad enough to plunge the family into a situation laden with troubles and worries.

Negative Relationship between Husband & Wife

Some Muslim spouses relate to each other like adversaries rather than life time partners. The husband assumes the position of dictator, and whatever he says is not law. The wife on the other hand feels that she must squeeze everything she can out of her husband. Some wives do not express their gratitude to their husbands irrespective of how much the man may do for her. Instead they adopt an attitude of ‘never enough’ and make the husband feel like a failure if he does not provide every want and desire their extravagant lifestyles dictate. Some husbands speak very harshly to their wives, humiliate them, and even physically abuse them. Their wives have no voice or opinion in family matters. Moreover certain husbands become so cold and miserly that even the basic expenditure for the house is difficult to come by.

Nikah – A divine institution

The Nikah bond has been divinely established for the welfare and upkeep of a healthy and progressive community. This divine prescription has been unjustly utilised as a vehicle to perpetrate oppression, deception, humiliation, and abuse. Allah Ta’ala describes marriage very differently in the Noble Quran: ‘And from his signs are, He created for you wives from among yourselves, so that you may live in tranquillity with them, and instilled love and mercy between your (hearts) . . . “(30:21)

Head of the Home

The position Islam has accorded to the man as the head of the home is a responsibility which will be accounted for, rather than a privilege which should be abused. We are taught to treat our wives well. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) has reported to have said: ‘The person possessing the most perfect faith is one who has excellent behaviour, and the best among you are those who are best towards their wives” (Mishkat)

Be Partners in Decision Making

Follow the principle of ‘Shura,” (consultation) and make decisions as a family. Implementing this Sunnah within the home increases harmony and love between family members. It will also assist in enhancing trust and loyalty between spouses and the children.

Abuse

Abstain totally from every form of emotional, mental, or physical abuse to your spouse.

Watch Your Words

Be very careful what you say when you are upset. The wounds afflicted to the heart of a person by words will never heal and remain a lifelong memory. Sometimes you will say things that you would never say when you were not angry. Apply the directives found in the Hadith for suppression of anger.

Work Together in the House

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) consistently assisted his wives with household chores. When Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) did not consider the housework trivial, how can we today obligate our wives to all the house work and much more?

Communication is Important

Talk to each other, communicate, have a dialogue, but do it respectfully. Husbands and wives need to talk to each other. It is better to deal with problems early and honestly than to let them pile up until they explode.

Live Simply

Do not envy or cast your gaze towards those spouses who seem to be living a more luxurious life than your family. Be pleased with what you have. The grass will always look greener on the other side. The wealthiest person is the one who has attained contentment of heart. To develop the quality of contentment, look at those people who have less than you, not those who have more. Repeatedly thank Allah Ta’ala for the many blessings in your life.

Admit Your Mistakes

When you make a mistake, admit it. When your mate makes a mistake, excuse him or her easily. If possible, never sleep angry with each other.

Past Problems

Everything that has happened is history. Repent for the past and live for the future. Do not focus discussion on the past unless it is something that will make both of you laugh.

The Duaa for a blissful marriage: “Allahumma rabana hab lana min azwaajinaa wa zurriyyatina qurrata a-ayun waj-alna lil muttaqeena imaama” (O Allah! grant us such wives and offspring who will be a source of coolness for our eyes, and make us leaders of the Allah-Fearing)

11 Signs of Kibr (Pride/Arrogance)

Latest

read time: 2 min

The Prophet said,

No one who has an atom’s-weight of Pride in his heart will enter Paradise.” A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, what if a man likes his clothes and his shoes to look good?” He said, “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty, Pride means rejecting the truth and looking down on people”(Sahih Muslim).

Commentary:

The word or the name for arrogance/pride in Arabic is ‘Kibr’. This is the inner quality of pride. The name of the outward quality is ‘Takabbur’ which means arrogance.

Arrogance is a blameworthy characteristic which is the feature of Iblees and his followers in this world, those on whose hearts Allah Ta'ala has placed a seal.

11 Signs of a Person Having Pride/Arrogance:

He doesn’t like others to have what he has

He cannot avoid anger

He cannot avoid being jealous of others

He doesn’t accept advice from others

He doesn’t want to listen or accept advice from a learned person or even attend lessons

When advising people he always puts them down

When speaking he will say good remarks about himself

When he speaks he speaks with pride to let people know he has knowledge

He deals with people in bad way

He walks in bad way

He has looks down at people because he is wealthier, or has a better appearance.

The cure for arrogance involves Knowledge and Action which involves the following remedies:

Firstly, you should know and recognise your Lord and know and recognise your own self as you should be recognised, and that you are not worthy of greatness and that true greatness and pride are only for Allah Ta'ala

Secondly, you should think of yourself as being just like other people and realize that they are like you; they were born from a mother and a father just as you were, and that taqwa (piety, fear of Allah) is the true criterion of superiority.

Allah Ta'ala says (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At Taqwa [i.e. he is one of the Muttaqoon (the pious)” (Al-Hujuraat, 49:13).

And finally, know and realize that on the Day of Resurrection the person with pride will be gathered in a small form like an ant which will be trampled underfoot as The Prophet said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the arrogant will be gathered like ants in the form of men. Humiliation will overwhelm them from all sides. They will be driven to a prison in Hell called Bawlas, with the hottest fire rising over them, and they will be given to drink of the juice of the inhabitants of Hell, which is teenat al-khabaal” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi).

Arrogant people are hated by other people just as they are hated by Allah Ta'ala; people love humble, tolerant and gentle people, and they hate those who are harsh and cruel to people.

And Allah knows best!

Dont forget to forward to others.

6 Practical Steps Toward Sincere Repentance

Latest

Most people are aware of the conditions people must fulfill before their repentance is accepted, namely giving up the sin, regretting the sin, and determining never to commit it again.

However, in this article we will highlight some practical steps people should follow in order to help achieve sincere repentance.

1: Trying to count all the sins that you have committed since adulthood until the present time.

This is an introduction to repenting for all these sins, because when the soul considers all its sins, it will be humble and tend to repent as soon as possible. Here is a list of the categories of sins to help you remember your past sins:

- Sins of the body, such as the tongue (backbiting, tale-bearing, lying, and ridiculing others); the eyes (looking at what is prohibited), ears, hands, feet and private parts.

- Sins of the heart, such as arrogance, envy, aggression, self-conceit, and so on.

- Negligence in performing your duties towards one’s parents, relatives and negligence regarding the other duties such as enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil, as well as Da'wah (calling to Islam).

- Negligence in the acts of worship like delaying the prayer after its due time.

2: Try to count all the blessings of Allaah The Almighty upon you.

You should keep counting these blessings until you realize how negligent you are towards the rights of Allaah The Almighty and until you despair of counting. Allaah The Exalted Says (what means): {And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allaah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, humankind is most unjust and ungrateful.} [Quran 14:34]

Then, you should make a comparison between the blessings that Allaah The Almighty sends down to you, and your misdeeds that are being sent to Him in return. In this case, you will not be able to resist your tears, your heart will be soft and you will say: “I acknowledge the favors that You have bestowed upon me, and I confess my sins. Pardon me, for none but You has the power to pardon.” [Al-Bukhaari]

When you shed tears and feel remorse, you should then move to the third step.

3: Repentance Prayer

After deserting the sin, you should immediately implement the advice of the Prophet,(Peace be upon him) who said: “Whenever one commits a sin, and then performs ablution perfectly, and prays two Rak’ahs (units of prayer) after which he seeks the forgiveness of Allaah He will forgive him.” [Al-Albaani: Saheeh]

Then, you should determine that you would never return to sins. In this way, you will live the best day of your life since your birth.

4: Keep away from bad friends and evil companions.

Sever your relationship with them, because they will prevent you from returning to your Lord. If you succeed in getting rid of them, then this is a great sign that Allaah The Almighty has accepted your repentance.

5: You should have a daily program of acts of worship to perform.

This program aims at helping you make up for what you missed and compensate your negligence towards the rights of Allaah The Almighty. This program should include reading parts of the Quran, Dhikr (words of remembrance) reported from the Prophet, night prayer and fasting. However, the most important thing is that this program should be gradual and realistic.

6: You should attend a religious lecture in a masjid once a week on a regular basis.

This step aims at strengthening your relationship with your Lord and the righteous people who are your companions on the road to faith. Accompany those righteous people and never keep away from them.
