  • Anti-terrorism Bill will be changed
The highly controversial Antiterrorism Bill is subject to amendments and changes in Parliament and as such no one should have any fear or feeling of threat from the proposed Bill, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said. The government is aware of concerns raised by the global and local community on certain provisions contained in the draft of the Anti-terrorism Bill and the Government is ready to alleviate them by discussion, compromise and flexibility, he added. Addressing a news conference at the Information Department auditorium, Minister Rajapakshe said the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) passed in 1979 under President J.R. Attorney General Palitha Fernando says that this is an opportune moment, for everyone to unite and realise the importance of religious and racial harmony. He made this comment in Colombo on Tuesday.

The launch of the Sinhala Version of the book titled Islamic Jurisprudence authored by Justice C.G.Weeramantry took place at the auditorium of the Bandaranaike Center for International Studies on Tuesday evening.

Attorney General, PaIitha Fernando said

“I must tell you that this is an opportune moment for all of us to get together and realise the importance of religious and racial harmony. If anyone does anything to breach that, I think that attempt should be condemned with revulsion and disgust. I say this with all seriousness. I say so because it is only on religious and racial harmony that everything depends on. And we cannot think of any sort of development devoid of such religious harmony. “

How the Month of Rajab Can Make You More Productive

A beautiful aspect of Allah’s power is that He chooses and selects whatever He wills. Allah ‘azza wajal says about Himself: And your Lord creates whatsoever He wills and chooses. [Quran, 28:68]. The attribute of choosing shows the perfection of His wisdom, knowledge and power.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’alaa has chosen four months to be sacred. Did you know that we’re in one of those four months right now?

The Prophet salallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: O People! Time has gone back to how it was at the time Allah created the Heavens and the Earth. A year has twelve months, four of which are sacred, three consecutive, Dhul-Qi’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab. [Al-Bukharee]

Now the next question is: what does this mean to you? Let’s get ready to find out what you can do to benefit in the Sacred Month of Rajab! First we discover some interesting facts about this time of the year followed by some amazing spiritual productivity tips for you to apply right now insha’Allah!

In this week’s central ayah Allah ‘azza wajal instructs us: Verily, the number of months with Allāh is twelve months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allāh on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein. [Quran, 9: 36].

An Islamic perspective on Muslim - Buddhist dialogue

http://www.dailynews.lk/2013/05/13/fea27.asp

This important need is being increasingly felt today than ever before due to ever increasing violence and bloodshed , ethnic conflict, religious strife and many other challenges that are threatening the stable social order, peace and security.

Dr. M A M Shukri - Director Jamiah Naleemiah-Beruwala

Many conferences are being held in various part of the world in the form of Dialogue between Islam and Christianity and Islam and Judaism. Many Muslim and Christian Organizations on the part western world are playing a significant role in promoting understanding, dialogue and co-existence between Muslims, Christians and Jews, but very little attempts have been made to initiate a dialogue between Islam and other Oriental religions at International level.

The followers of oriental religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism constitute about half of the world population and the oriental religions had played an important role in shaping the spiritual traditions of humanity. The orient has a long history of peaceful co-existence between religions, except for few instances in which there had been frictions and conflicts due to reasons that are more political and economic and less motivated by religious impulses and more over conflicts of this nature are not the norm but exceptions.

STOP ATTACKS ON MUSLIMS – DALAI LAMA TELLS LANKAN MONKS

The Dalai Lama has implored Buddhist monks in Myanmar and Sri Lanka to put an end to a series of recent attacks on Muslims in their countries. He said Buddhists, including monks, were responsible for recent violence against Muslims in Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader spoke Tuesday night about religious violence when asked questions following a speech he delivered to 15,000 people at the University of Maryland. He condemned all killing being carried out in the name of religion and then turned to his own religion.

Myanmar has been wracked by sectarian violence that has displaced tens of thousands over the past year, while Sri Lankan Buddhist groups have recently attacked Muslim businesses, AP reports.

Islamic culture and the challenge of Buddhist fundamentalism

April 30, 2013, 12:00 pm

World Literature: A Reader (Routledge, 2013) Editors: Prof. Cesar Domingues et al

Reviewed by Liyanage Amarakeerthi

When I heard about the Boston explosions I had many hopes. First, I hoped that my teacher, who is at Harvard, was safe. Second, I hoped no one was killed. Third, I hoped there was no any Muslim connection to the explosion. Finally, I hoped Boston, one of my favourite American cities, liberal, leftwing, cosmopolitan and intellectually bent, was not disrupted by any fundamentalist attacks, internal or external.

I found out soon enough that my teacher was safe. Sadly, some people died, including an eight-year old boy- someone from my son’s generation. America has its own fundamentalists. When it goes to war, America (Washington) itself is fundamentalist. International terrorism is a real problem and all fundamentalists are party to that terrorism. America’s not-so-democratic acts in the past also keep following like the cart behind the oxen as it has in a Dhammapada verse. In Sri Lanka too we have to be mindful of our collective Karma.

My third hope was much more Sri Lankan than personal. In Sri Lanka, Bodu Bala Sena (‘the army of Buddhist power’) – the newest and crudest version of Sinhala nationalism- is up against Sri Lankan Muslims, claiming that they are invading the social, cultural, economic spheres, pushing aside the Sinhala majority. I do not know the factual position. But the rhetoric seems to suggest something much more dangerous than the facts (even if they are correct) ever could. Some of the BBS (or of the populace attracted to the organization) accusations are really absurd: some Muslim-owned clothing store (a chain of shops in fact) is selling an incredible female underwear that makes Sinhala women barren. The argument is that this shop chain is part of a Muslim conspiracy to reduce the Sinhala population in the country.
