  • Anti-terrorism Bill will be changed
The highly controversial Antiterrorism Bill is subject to amendments and changes in Parliament and as such no one should have any fear or feeling of threat from the proposed Bill, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said. The government is aware of concerns raised by the global and local community on certain provisions contained in the draft of the Anti-terrorism Bill and the Government is ready to alleviate them by discussion, compromise and flexibility, he added. Halaal Certification Explained

By J.T. Mahmud

During the last few months there has been increasing criticism from certain quarters to the halaal certification scheme of ACJU (All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama). In Sri Lanka, most non-muslims have the impression that halaal is something only to do with animal slaughter. This is a misunderstanding of the Arabic word halaal which means ‘permitted’ and its opposite haram means ‘prohibited’. Halal and haram are universal terms that apply to all facets of life. However, we will use these terms only in relation to food products, meat products, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, and food contact materials. ACJU’s halaal certification process, besides monitoring abattoirs, also involves the scrutinizing of ingredients in food production facilities that do not deal with any slaughter and instead produce consumer items. Unfortunately, wrong figures are given and wrong accusations are made against ACJU, which has taken the shape of a disinformation and defamation campaign. This article is an attempt to try and dispel these false claims and present the facts and figures to the readers so that they may realize and understand the truth.

Media Communique by ACJU re: destruction of a place of Buddhist worship in Bangladesh

We are deeply disturbed and outraged by reports of the destruction of a place of Buddhist worship in Bangladesh.  We are saddened that this despicable act is said to have been committed by a group of misguided Muslims.  We unreservedly condemn this reprehensible act and call upon the Government of Bangladesh to take immediate action in this regard.

Such acts of religious bigotry and intolerance are completely prohibited by the tenets of Islam which is a peaceful and viable way of life.   The Holy Quran expressly states that there is no compulsion in religion and exhorts all Muslims to engage with persons of other faiths with reason and kindness.   The Holy Prophet of Islam (on whom be peace) was the very epitome of compassion and tolerance.  Islamic history is replete with instances embodying such tolerance.   If one may give a random pick – the Holy Prophet was persecuted and assaulted when he preached his message in the city of Taif.

Buddhist monks took to the streets yesterday again demanding the demolition of yet another Muslim community building in Colombo, claiming it was illegal.

Over 250 protestors led by Buddhist monks staged a demonstration yesterday in front of Galvihara Road, Dehiwala, calling for the demolition of the Madarasa ‘Darul- Qur’an lil Baranil Iman.

The protestors charged it is an illegal construction and a place where goats are scarified.

The Police was immediately deployed to avoid any clashes.

One of the monks leading the protest claimed the Madarasa should be demolished as the Muslims had constructed it illegally; a claim many Muslims in the area are disputing.

Fingers Crossed: Religious rifts in Sri Lanka’s Dambulla area, not affecting tourists

May 01, 2012 (LBO) – Foreign visitors continue to tour Sri Lanka’s central regions, despite ongoing religious tensions where Buddhist monks have demanded a 60-year-old mosque be relocated, a tourism industry lobby said.

"It’s not that much of an issue yet," NilminNanayakkara, president of the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) told reporters.
The central regions which hosts some of the island’s former royal kingdoms and historic Buddhist temples, has been in the news since the dispute flared up recently. The area is one of the key cultural and heritage sites for visiting foreign tourists.
The Buddhist clergy point out that the mosque in Dambulla, some 150 kilometers north of Colombo, are situated inside temple land and should be demolished. The minority Muslims argue that they have been praying in that mosque since the mid-1940s.

Last week, the state offered three alternate locations for the mosque and also offered tax money to fund a new building, an offer firmly rejected by the SLMC.

"We will not agree to any compromise of taking land elsewhere," Sri Lanka Muslim Congress chief and Justice Minister RaufHakeem told reporters.

"We are very, very firm on that.”

Hakeem alleged that "extremist forces" were trying to stir trouble, to fan religious tensions across the island that is emerging after the end of nearly four decades of ethnic bloodshed.

"A strong government must protect the weaker minorities," Hakeem said. "We appeal to the government to ensure that they do not allow xenophobic forces to hold the country hostage."

Sri Lanka is recovering from a 30-year ethnic war which ended in 2009. In 1983 the state failed to protect thousands of minority Tamils who perished in ethnic riots, in landmark breakdown of rule of law and justice.

Sri Lankan citizens have taken up arms against the state three times, the Sinhalese majority twice and the Tamil minority once as the country was buffeted from both state intervention and nationalism.
