Bodu Bala Sena Meets President Mahinda Rajapaksa

Buddhist priests representing Bodu Bala Sena met President Mahinda Rajapaksa this afternoon at Temple Trees and discussed a host of issues during the near two-hour meeting.

While discussing a number of problems pertaining to Buddhist temples, priests and the practice of the Buddhist religion in the country overall, one of the main points of the conversation revolved around some of the ongoing disputes between some Muslim and Buddhist groups.

Referring to the various messages that have appeared in the media recently, President Rajapaksa requested the group not to engage in any activities that would be seen as promoting communal hatred.

During the last few months there has been increasing criticism from certain quarters to the halaal certification scheme of ACJU (All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama). In Sri Lanka, most non-muslims have the impression that halaal is something only to do with animal slaughter. This is a misunderstanding of the Arabic word halaal which means ‘permitted’ and its opposite haram means ‘prohibited’. Halal and haram are universal terms that apply to all facets of life. However, we will use these terms only in relation to food products, meat products, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, and food contact materials. ACJU’s halaal certification process, besides monitoring abattoirs, also involves the scrutinizing of ingredients in food production facilities that do not deal with any slaughter and instead produce consumer items. Unfortunately, wrong figures are given and wrong accusations are made against ACJU, which has taken the shape of a disinformation and defamation campaign. This article is an attempt to try and dispel these false claims and present the facts and figures to the readers so that they may realize and understand the truth.

හලාල් සහතිකය ලබා ගැනීම සඳහා අය කරන ප්‍රමාණයන් විස්තර පහතින් ලබා දී ඇත්තෙමු. අපගේ ගිණුම් රජයේ නීති රීති වලට අනුකුලව නිවැරදිව පවත්වාගෙන යන අතර ඒවා වාර්ෂිකව විගණනය කොට සහතික කර ඇත. මේ කිසිවක් රහස් ලෙබණ නොවන අතර මෙය පරික්ෂා කර බැලීම සඳහා අප කාර්යාලය වෙත ක්‍රමාණුකූලවපැමිණ එම කරුණ ඉටු කර ගත හැකි බව ප්‍රකාශ කරන්නෙමු.

Sri Lankan Wins International Quran Contest for First Time.

Sri Lanka’s Rifti Muhammed Rizwan, who came first in the international Holy Quran recital contest, held at Mecca in Saudi Arabia recently, returned to the country on Wednesday. Eighty six countries participated in the event.

This is the first time that a Sri Lankan had secured the top slot in this prestigious international contest.

We are deeply disturbed and outraged by reports of the destruction of a place of Buddhist worship in Bangladesh.  We are saddened that this despicable act is said to have been committed by a group of misguided Muslims.  We unreservedly condemn this reprehensible act and call upon the Government of Bangladesh to take immediate action in this regard.

Such acts of religious bigotry and intolerance are completely prohibited by the tenets of Islam which is a peaceful and viable way of life.   The Holy Quran expressly states that there is no compulsion in religion and exhorts all Muslims to engage with persons of other faiths with reason and kindness.   The Holy Prophet of Islam (on whom be peace) was the very epitome of compassion and tolerance.  Islamic history is replete with instances embodying such tolerance.   If one may give a random pick – the Holy Prophet was persecuted and assaulted when he preached his message in the city of Taif.

Ten Outstanding Young Persons award recipients for 2012

The Ten Outstanding Young Persons or the TOYP award recipients for 2012 organised  the junior Chamber International were announced on Monday evening.

The Ten Outstanding Young Persons  is one of the most prestigious international award seletion and has been held in Sri Lanka for the past thirty three years.

International luminaries who have won this award in the past include former US President’s, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Henry Kissinger.

The winners of the award this year are in the category of business, economic and entrepreneurial accomplishment, Thushantha Jayasundara.

The award for academic leadership was won by Dr. Faiz Marikkar.

Buddhist monks took to the streets yesterday again demanding the demolition of yet another Muslim community building in Colombo, claiming it was illegal.

Over 250 protestors led by Buddhist monks staged a demonstration yesterday in front of Galvihara Road, Dehiwala, calling for the demolition of the Madarasa ‘Darul- Qur’an lil Baranil Iman.

The protestors charged it is an illegal construction and a place where goats are scarified.

The Police was immediately deployed to avoid any clashes.

One of the monks leading the protest claimed the Madarasa should be demolished as the Muslims had constructed it illegally; a claim many Muslims in the area are disputing.

Chief Minister agrees to dissolution; President in bid to revitalise SLFP

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed members of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) to be prepared for an early election in the Eastern Province. Eastern Provincial Council Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan said he gave his consent on Thursday to dissolve the council earlier than scheduled.

Constitutionally, the consent of the Chief Minister is required to dissolve a provincial council.
Three years after the military defeat of Tiger guerrillas, the government wants to put its popularity to the test in the East by holding provincial council elections.

A Sri Lankan Islamic scholar currently visiting the Kingdom said racial tensions following an attack on Dambulla mosque in Sri Lanka had greatly eased and the country’s government is trying its best to resolve this issue amicably.

“We firmly believe that very soon a satisfactory solution will be realized on the initiative of the government,” M.I.M Rizvi Mufthie, president of the Colombo-based All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama (ACJU) said in Riyadh on Friday. Abdul Cader Al Mashoor Moulana, the Sri Lankan president’s coordinating secretary, was also present at the lecture.

Mufthie, who was adjudged among the 500 most influential Muslims worldwide, was addressing the members of the Sri Lankan Muslim community here on Friday.
