The highly controversial Antiterrorism Bill is subject to amendments and changes in Parliament and as such no one should have any fear or feeling of threat from the proposed Bill, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said.

Ibn Abbaas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said: There are no days during which good deeds are more beloved to Allah than these days; meaning the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. They inquired: Not even Jihad in the cause of Allah? He said: Not even Jihad in the cause of Allah, unless one goes out for Jihad sacrificing both his life and property and returning with neither. ISLAM & SCIENCE

The power of science is so amazing that it pushes religious people to take one of two paths when it comes to their beliefs about the world and what their sacred texts have to say about it. Either one has to both reject what we learned through the scientific method and have faith that what they believe to be Revelation is the Truth and everything else is the devil’s deception, or they relegate what they see in their sacred texts to be allegories to teach us life’s lessons. Many followers of the Jewish and Christian traditions seem to have fallen entrapped into one of these two paths. We now have two main encampments: young earth creationists, or sacred scripture allegorists. There are even an increasing number of believers who have been taken by powerful scientific theories, such as that of evolution, and have now begun to reject the literality of the story of Adam and Eve as a real event. Unfortunately, Muslims are increasingly joining their Abrahamic brothers and sisters as they try to cope with how to deal with the seemingly outward contradiction between religion and science.

Children are easily influenced by their surroundings. These days, it is extremely difficult to expose our children to an ideal Islamic environment given the influences from media, friends and even other members of the family.

With television, radio, Internet and forms of media mostly touting un-Islamic values, it is up to parents and adults close to the children to set the correct example.

It is impossible to shield our children from all the negative forces that can shape their minds and, ultimately, their behavior.

Understanding the Qur’an: Some Initial Conditions

By Amin Ahsan Islahi

Cleanliness and ablution are the initial conditions for the prayer. One can obtain its true blessings only if one fulfils these initial conditions before offering it. Similarly, there are some initial conditions for understanding the Qur’an. One can be blessed with this understanding only if one tries to grasp the Holy Book after fulfilling these conditions. This writer will now attempt to explain these:

Purity of Intent

Purity of intent is the foremost of all conditions. It means that one should read the Qur’an only to obtain guidance from it and not for any other purpose. If a person has some other purpose in mind, he will not only remain deprived of the blessings of the Qur’an, but he may also get further away from the Qur’an than he formerly was. If he studies the Qur’an in order to be an exegete so that he may get some fame and mundane interest, he might achieve this target but he will never get to the true comprehension of the Qur’an. Similarly, if a person studies the Qur’an to notch up some arguments for his preconceived notions, he may succeed in getting some distorted testimonies for them, but at the cost of understanding the Qur’an.

Intelligence: Is it in the brain or the heart?

Contrary to what we know now, the “organ of intellect” was not always known to be the brain. In fact, before the matter was settled, there were two competing views regarding where the intellect is in the body: the brain or the heart. The most famous of those on one side was Aristotle who was pushing for a cardiocentric (heart-centered) model, which argued that the heart is in fact the organ of intelligence (Frampton, 1991). In his observations, Aristotle noticed that poking the brain of an injured person did not induce pain. He therefore reasoned that the brain is not engaged in perception of any kind. Had he known about pain receptors, I’m sure he would’ve done a few more tests.

Miswak – A great sunnah and a healthy habit

Islam is a complete way of life and therefore teaches us good manners too. Cleanliness in Islam is given a lot of importance according to a famous Hadith which says, “Purification is half of faith.” (Muslim). It not only teaches us personal hygiene, but also cleanliness of our houses and neighborhoods.

Allah has indeed created man in the best form and granted him beauty, and so he wishes to see His slave in the best form as well. “Verily Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.” (Muslim).

The use of siwak or miswak holds great importance in Islam. Apart from keeping the body and limbs clean Islam teaches special cleanliness for the mouth in order to keep away from diseases and also to make ones breath pleasant so that it doesn’t become a cause of discomfort to others. Since teeth are the doors of our mouth they should always be clean and shinning as it adds beauty to a Muslims smile and face.

Understanding Islamic Prophetic medicine in light of eastern medicine

Featured Islamic Articles

by Dr. Rehan Zaidi

Amazing is our confidence in Modern medicine. Amazing still is how illness can change all that confidence quite quickly. Spending billions of dollars annually on alternative health care in the United States, the sheer number of people becoming disillusioned with the current state of medical care is driving medical institutions to loosen up on their conservative medical ideology.

Johns Hopkins, the Mayo Clinic, MD Anderson, most other leading hospitals, all have begun integrating complementary therapies, even if nothing more than treating with Chinese needles. Acupuncture, like most Eastern therapies, used in a purely Modern medical fashion is limited in benefit compared to its 4000 year old traditional method, but at least Western medicine is recognizing the East can contribute a thing or two. Eastern countries, surprisingly, are doing the exact opposite: As the West proudly presents its newfound respect in ancient therapies, the East shyly brushes its medical traditions under the rug.
