Dr. Shafi donates arrears of his salary to purchase medicines for hospitalsDr. Shihabdeen Mohamed Shafi, the doctor at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital has decided to donate arrears of his salary amounting over Rs. 2.67 million for the purchase of essential medicines for hospitals.
Dr. Shafi who was on compulsory leave on charges of performing infertility surgery, has received a cheque of over Rs. 2.67 million salary arrears from the Health Ministry last week.
The salary arrears include the basic salary, interim allowance, cost of living, and allowance in lieu of pension for the period of compulsory leave imposed on Dr. Sihabdeen.
Dr. Shafi who was employed at the Kurunegala teaching hospital was arrested on May 25th, 2019, on charges of performing infertility surgery.

All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) Meets Muslim Ministers and MPs
Following the invitation of the Senior Minister Hon. M.H.M. Fowzie the Executive Committee of All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama met the Muslim Ministers & MPs on Monday evening, 18.03.2013 at the Dehiwala Jumu'ah Masjid.
Hon. Minister M.H.M. Fowzie said that the meeting was arranged to bring about a well-defined decision on the Halaal Issue which continues to be havoc.
The participants came out with various opinions. Some insisted on the complete cessation of the issue of Halaal Certification, while some others said that Jamiyya has taken the right decision, but leaving apart the Halaal issue we should try to bring an end to the other issues uprising day by day. And, some others said that Jamiyya's decision was acceptable; but, we must arrange it to be released officially.
Mufti Rizwe, the President of ACJU, updated clearly every step taken, and every decision taken and the reasons for every decision taken on the Halaal issue. He also explained the final decision taken after discussing with the Muslim members of the Parliamentary Sub-Committee.
They are:
1. The companies who received the Halaal Certificates were requested to display the logo on every product as a mandate. But, now this condition is relaxed to be optional to the companies.
2. Though the service of issuing Halaal Certification had been carried out with a fee to meet the cost of processing, Jamiyya has now come forward to do that free of charge.
After considering on every opinion forwarded at the meeting (held on 18.03.2013) and a deep discussion the following resolutions were taken unanimously:
1. ACJU shall get an official letter, on the stand of its Halaal issue, from the Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and submit it to the Parliament Sub-Committee.
2. Under the leadership of Hon. Minister M.H.M. Fowzie, all Muslim members in the Parliament sub-Committee shall get together to arrive at a good solution that shall not be detrimental to any Muslims or non-Muslims of this country.
All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama had given up its entitlements in whatever ways possible to resolve the Halaal issue.
At the first stage: ACJU decided to issue Halaal Certification only to Muslims
At the second stage: ACJU decided to issue Halaal Certification at 70 is to 30 ratio basis
At the third stage: ACJU requested the Government to take over the responsibility of Halaal Certification
At the fourth stage: ACJU took the present decision. This we wish to inform to the general public.
Furthermore, ACJU is willing to accept any fruitful decision taken by the Muslim members of the Parliament Sub-Committee under the leadership of Senior Minister Hon. M.H.M. Fowzie, forgetting all party differences.
