  • Anti-terrorism Bill will be changed
The highly controversial Antiterrorism Bill is subject to amendments and changes in Parliament and as such no one should have any fear or feeling of threat from the proposed Bill, Justice Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said. The government is aware of concerns raised by the global and local community on certain provisions contained in the draft of the Anti-terrorism Bill and the Government is ready to alleviate them by discussion, compromise and flexibility, he added. Addressing a news conference at the Information Department auditorium, Minister Rajapakshe said the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) passed in 1979 under President J.R. Jayewardene’s rule as a temporary measure to counter the emerging separatist insurgency. The PTA has been misused and exploited by successive Governments since then for their personal and political...

Quebec City mosque shooting: Six killed, eight wounded

Latest

ix people have been killed and another eight wounded in a shooting at a mosque in Quebec City, Canada, police say.

Shots were fired at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre on Sunday night, where more than 50 people had gathered for evening prayers.

One suspect was arrested at the scene and another was arrested nearby. Police do not believe there are other suspects at large.

The Canadian authorities are treating the shooting as a terror attack.

"We condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a centre of worship and refuge," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement.

"Muslim-Canadians are an important part of our national fabric, and these senseless acts have no place in our communities, cities and country."

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard also referred to the shooting as a terrorist attack.

The dead were aged between about 35 and 70 years old, police spokeswoman Christine Coulombe said. Some of those injured were in a serious condition, she said.

Police said the area was secure and the situation was "under control". Thirty-nine people had left the mosque safely, they said.

Earlier, a witness had told Reuters news agency that up to three gunmen had been involved. The news agency also reported that a "heavily armed police tactical squad" had been seen entering the mosque.

The second suspect fled the scene in a vehicle but was arrested on a bridge leading to Orleans Island, the Journal de Quebec reported. The suspect had called the police himself, the newspaper said.

Police seized automatic weapons and handguns from the alleged attackers, the Journal de Quebec said.

The president of the mosque, Mohamed Yangui - who was not inside at the time - said the shooting had happened in the men's section of the mosque.

"Why is this happening here? This is barbaric," he said.

On its Facebook page the centre thanked the public "for the hundreds of messages of compassion".

In June last year the same mosque was the target of an Islamophobic incident when a pig's head was left in front of the building, with a card saying "bonne appetit".

Eating pork is forbidden in Islam.

Pearls of Wisdom: No.50 “Food for the Soul” SUBJECT: BROTHERHOOD

Pearls of Wisdom: No.50

“Food for the Soul”

SUBJECT:  BROTHERHOOD

Allah, The Most Exalted, says:

"The Believers are but a single Brotherhood." (Qur’an 49:10)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

"A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. He does not oppress him, nor does he leave him at the mercy of others." (Hadith - Muslim)

Do not hate each other, do not envy each other, do not turn away from each other, but rather be servants of Allah as brothers. It is not lawful for a Muslim to boycott his brother for more than three days.”(Hadith–Bukhari )

Note: Brotherhood in Islam is a comprehensive concept that is based upon good character with others, treating others the way we want to be treated, and uniting together upon common values. It has three levels of degree: religion, family, and humanity. Each of these levels has a set of rights and duties that a Muslim must uphold with others. The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” (Hadith Bukhari)

Pearls of Wisdom: No.51 “Food for the Soul” SUBJECT: VIRTUE AFTER VICE

Pearls of Wisdom: No.51

“Food for the Soul”

SUBJECT:  VIRTUE AFTER VICE

Allah, The Most Exalted, says:

“Indeed good actions eradicate bad actions. This is a reminder for people who pay heed.” (Qur’an Surah 11, Verse 114)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

”Be conscious of Allah wherever you are. Follow the bad deed with a good one to erase it, and engage others with beautiful character.” (Hadith - Tirmidhi)

Note: Virtue is a cleanser and can remove the stains of sins.  We often respond to a sin by putting ourselves in a figurative corner and abusing ourselves psychologically until we get over that sin. This is not what Allah Ta’ala wants from us. Yes, we should feel guilty, have a level of regret and MOST IMPORTANTLY repent, but it should not stop us from moving forwa rd in good deeds. People use their sins as an excuse to stay behind. Do not allow sin to stop yourself from all the other good that you could be involved in.

The response to a sin should not be to wait, but rather to race to do something good so the sin can be erased. Our attitude should be proactive and positive. We should always have hope that Allah Ta’ala can, and will, have mercy on us as long as we keep struggling and pushing forward.

Impact Of Buddhism, Politics & Corruption On The Rule Of Law

January 15, 2017 | Filed under: Colombo Telegraph,Opinion | Posted by:
By Mass L. Usuf
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” ~ Martin Luther King Jr.
My interest in writing this opinion is solely in relation to the Rule of Law (ROL) and its application in post-conflict Sri Lanka. There were promises echoed from the stages of both the Presidential and General elections with much hype, to transform Sri Lanka into an exemplary nation. Nearly two years after, even a semblance of this looks a distant mirage?
Events of the recent past indicates that there are at least three areas which impact on the ROL locally. They are Buddhism, politics and corruption. These three are intertwined and difficult to manage. For instance, politics is tainted with Buddhism and corruption. The solution is to first untwine and separate each of these from the other and, secondly, to distance each of these three factors from this idea of the ROL. To do this there are certain conditions precedent :
  1. Determination (firm and sincere), to establish a decent civil society;
  2. Positioning (truly), the interest of the nation above personal interests, ambitions and political party pursuits;
  3. Inclination (strong), towards upholding truth and justice;
  4. Resolution (unswerving), to apply the law equally to all including the monks and politicians; and,
  5. Courage, bravery, impartiality and the real character of patriotism.
It is apt to refer to a statement by the Late Justice Weeramantry, “there can be no democracy in a country unless the rule of law prevails at every level from the humblest to the most exalted citizen.”
Are these monks alone?
For the sake of brevity, I will confine myself only to the first of these three i.e. Buddhism. As far as Buddhism is concerned the excellence of it’s teachings is well known worldwide. What is not equally known is the irreparable damage that is being done to Buddhism. There have been several scholarly opinions expressed in the Colombo Telegraph time and again, mostly written by Sinhala Buddhists. Almost all of which expressing concern on the same lines namely, the damage being perpetrated on Buddhism. Strangely, not by any non-Buddhist but by the Buddhists themselves. More so, by some of those who have chosen to adopt the strictures of Buddha and donned the saffron robe. Are these monks alone? Nay, they are ably supported by the cohorts within the bureaucracy and those outside. Evidently for their selfish political gains and, the cunning foxes among them, eyeing greater political ambitions in the future.
Racialist nationalism and buddhism are opportunistic slogans used by these so called ‘patriots’ and ‘saviours’. The Rule of Law for such elements is an obstacle.
Is Buddha A Prophet Of Islam?
This is a subject of much intellectual debate and scholarship. I must make mention of this in passing. Some may feel uneasy or even jealous arising from a sense of possessiveness that a Muslim is writing about Buddhism. Be aware that Buddhism is a universal message and not the private property of the Sinhalese. I love Buddhism and I love the Buddhism in it’s original form. I, obviously, do not love the corrupted version of Buddhism as it is commonly being practised today.
My love for Buddhism stems from my adherence to Islam. It teaches that to every nation messengers and reformers have been sent at different times. Such Reformers preached what was suitable for that time and for those people.
“And for every community or a nation, there is a Messenger;” (Quran, Chapter 10 Verse 47)
“Truly We inspire you, as We inspired Noah, and the prophets after him, as We inspired Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and Jesus and Job and Jonah and Aaron and Solomon, and as We bestowed unto David the Psalms;”
“And Messengers We have mentioned to you before, and Messengers We have not mentioned to you,…” (Quran, Chapter 4 Verse 163–164)
Note the last sentence, ‘Messengers We have mentioned to you before, and Messengers We have not mentioned to you’. A subject under study is if Buddha can be among one such Reformer who has not been mentioned but was Awakened to guide and reform mankind. Most of what he preached within the context of his time is in harmony with the progressive teachings of Islam. The final Reformer being Prophet Muhammed (Peace be upon him). This is, however, a totally different subject which can be dealt with on a later occasion.
Environment Of Impunity
It would be really humorous to think of a group of Congressmen writing a letter to their President, Barrack Obama, requesting him to take into custody and charge a suspect for inciting hate. Sadly, what would be considered a joke in the United States of America is a reality in Sri Lanka. Last month, (2nd December 2016) a letter was addressed to President Maithripala Sirisena signed by twenty one Muslim Parliamentarians requesting him “to take all extremists who are causing hate amongst communities into custody and charge them for inciting hate.” Does this action of the Members of Parliament demonstrate the absence of the normal standards of the Rule of Law? Something is amiss to require the intervention of the Chief Executive of the country over a simple investigation and prosecutorial matter. What is clear from this is the environment of impunity that has been created by the politicization of the Executive by successive governments. Wither the Rule of Law. In the absence of ROL chaos reigns and democracy diminishes.
I Will Kill You!
The virtues of the Noble Eightfold Path are very well known to the monks than to the layman. Despite this, it is alleged that Ampitiye Sumanarathana, a monk, by his conduct has either directly or indirectly brought disrepute to Buddha, Buddhism and to the respected venerable monks in the most offensive and disparaging manner. He is perceived by many to have violated these virtues by spewing out hate filled, abusive and derogatory words against another human being.
The essence of Pancha Sila (five virtues) is boundless compassion (metta). One of the virtues of the pancha sila is to abstain from killing (Panatipata). Monks take this pledge daily and also asseverates this virtue to the laymen everyday. It was shocking to see a monk who utters “Panatipata veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami: I undertake the precept to refrain from destroying living creatures”, threatening a government servant saying, “I will kill you”. Ironically, in the presence of the Police who are also government servants.
Reflect for a while at the Sila (purity of conduct) Samadhi (Tranquility) and Panna (Insightful wisdom) of this monk. (see video: CT, 12.11.2016). How many times would he have hypocritically mentioned “Sabbe satta bhavantu sukhitatta” (May all beings be happy) in Metta Bhavana (Loving-Kindness meditation)?
Who is bringing disrepute to, and destruction of, Buddhism?
Nexus Between Buddhism And The ROL
Were the laws of this land relaxed just because he is a monk? Does wearing the saffron robe entitle one to make threats against the life of another citizen? Do they enjoy the status of primus inter pares (first among equals) and have stationed themselves beyond justice? Sarcasm would have it that the traditional concept of Separation of Powers be reviewed to include these unbuddistic monks as a new entity along with the Legislative, Executive and the Judiciary.
Here comes the nexus between Buddhism and the ROL.
  1. Article 12 (1) of the Constitution? “All persons are equal before the law and are entitled to the equal protection of the law.”
  2. Article 9 of the Constitution? “… it shall be the duty of the State to protect and foster the Buddha Sasana…”.
  3. The Police Ordinance Section 79 (2)? “Any person who in any public place or at any public meeting uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour ……., shall be guilty of an offence under this section”.
  4. The Prevention of Terrorism Act Section 2 (1)(h)? “Any person by words either spoken …………. causes or intends to cause commission of acts of violence or religious, racial or communal disharmony or feelings of ill-will or hostility between different communities or racial or religious groups …. Shall be guilty of an offence”.
  5. The several Penal Code provisions relating to hate speech, threat of injury to Public Officer, criminal intimidation etc. all of which are offences.
Dear Mr. President and Mr. Prime Minister, what happened to that passionate election pledge that the Rule of Law shall be established?
Gnanasara’s rendezvous with President and the ROL
Gnanasara who famously called H.E. President Maithripala Sirisena, “rukada nayakayek – a puppet leader”, and demanded, ජනාධිපති තුමනි, ඔබ වහාම ඉල්ලා අස් වෙන්න “President, you resign immediately” is also on record stating among other matters, as follows:

How many “likes”? By Sister Sumaiyah Seedat

Latest

PoorBest

How many times have we posted a picture that we thought to be something great and to our surprise the picture receives a meager 10 “likes”?...Instant removal !

In our quest to boost our self-confidence, we have become egotistical and as fake as the filters we apply to our pictures on social media. Sadly, our lives have come down to us needing constant validation from others, some of whom are complete strangers to us! This is unhealthy because we build unrealistic views on life and suddenly what Allah Ta’ala has given to us is not enough.

We find fault with our complexion, our weight, height even the colour of our hair requires some sort of modification. We are indeed so vulnerable. The filters applied to pictures are deceptive and brainwashing and yet so many of us strive to look that way.

"You will never look like the girl on the front page of the magazine, as even that girl doesn’t look like her original self”

The harms of abusing social media are not only the inferiority-complex it gives its users, it also commonly leads to a narcissistic approach to life. One has reduced their self-worth to the amount of 'likes' they accumulate on their 'selfies' and thus feeding their ego's when they have indeed overlooked that
"Allah does not like the arrogant, the boastful" (Qur’an An-Nisa, 4:36).

Really, our beauty is sacred; we are beautiful because we are the work of Allah! You do not need validation from any human being.

The next time you are about to post a 'selfie' that you are convinced is going to get you many likes, ask yourself 3 things:

1. Would I be comfortable showing this picture to my children?
2. Would I be pleased if they grew up to do the same?
3. If I were to take my last breath tomorrow, would my pictures work for or against me in my grave?

Islam is not about doom and gloom, but in fact it’s about being in peace and harmony with our Creator 'Ar-Rahmaan'.

"Never despair of the mercy of your Lord" (Qur’an Az-Zumar 39:53)

No matter how far you may have strayed, do not let Shaitaan (Satan) misguide you into thinking that there is no way back, the doors of forgiveness are always open.

Always remember, a pretty face is temporary and inner beauty more important than outer beauty. Rather aspire to
"be so beautiful that others can't take their HEARTS off you"

Allah Ta’ala has created every person beautiful, unique and precious. Often this value is neither recognized nor appreciated by the person or society. Society determines a person’s worth according to its own preconceived values and standards. This  opinion of people generally determines how an individual perceives himself or herself.

A little boy went to his old grandpa and asked, "What's the value of my life?" The grandpa gave him one stone and said, "Find out the value of this stone, but don't sell it."

The boy took the stone to an Orange Seller and asked him what its cost would be. The Orange Seller saw the shiny stone and said, "You can take 12 oranges and give me the stone." The boy apologized and said that the grandpa has asked him not to sell it.

He went ahead and found a vegetable seller. "What could be the value of this stone?" he asked the vegetable seller. The seller saw the shiny stone and said, "Take one sack of potatoes and give me the stone." The boy again apologized and said he can't sell it.

Further ahead, he went into a jewellery shop and asked the value of the stone. The jeweler saw the stone under a lens and said, "I'll give you a million for this stone." When the boy shook his head, the jeweler said, "Alright, alright, take a few 24 karat gold necklaces, but give me the stone." The boy explained that he can't sell the stone.

Further ahead, the boy saw a precious stone's shop and asked the seller the value of this stone. When the precious stone's seller saw the big ruby, he lay down a red cloth and put the ruby on it. He thereafter examined the ruby. Then he walked in circles around the ruby and for a long time and then fixed his gaze on the ruby. "From where did you bring this priceless ruby from?" he asked. "Even if I sell whatever I own, and my life, I won't be able to purchase this priceless stone." Stunned and confused, the boy returned to the grandpa and told him what had happened.

"Now tell me what is the value of my life, grandpa?" Grandpa said, "The answers you got from the Orange Seller, the Vegetable Seller, the Jeweler & the Precious Stone's Seller explain the value of our life...

You may be a precious stone, even priceless, but, people will value you based on their financial status, their level of information, their belief in you, and their motive behind entertaining you, their ambition, and their risk taking ability.

But don't fear, you will surely find someone who will discern your true value. Respect yourself and don't sell yourself cheap. You are rare, unique, original and the only one of your kind. You are a masterpiece because you are MASTER'S PIECE. No one can replace you!

Indeed our true value can be only realized if we enter the Court of our Creator who is indeed the  Most Honest Valuator. He has manufactured us with such beauty and precision and only He knows our true value.

You weren't an accident. You weren't mass produced. You aren't an assembly-line product. You were deliberately planned, specifically gifted, and lovingly positioned on the earth by the Master Craftsman!

To realise your “TRUE VALUE”...  bow in worship and obedience to Him!

Sri Lanka Muslim Council objects to Justice Minister's statement on Muslim community

Latest

Sat, Nov 19, 2016, 11:12 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 19, Colombo: The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka (MCSL) has strongly objected to the statement made by the Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe in Parliament regarding the Muslim community.

Justice Minister told parliament Friday that information has been uncovered on 32 well-educated Sri Lankan Muslims of 4 families joining the Islamic State in Syria.

Issuing a statement today, MCSL president N M Ameen said Minister's statement implies that 32 Muslims have joined the ISIS recently.

"We strongly object to this misplaced statement. The facts given by the Honorable Minister were reported in the media more than one year ago when a Sri Lankan combatant died fighting with ISIS," Ameen said.

"There have been no new reports of any others involved since this was reported last year," he pointed out.

"It is believed that one family had gone to Syria to provide humanitarian support to the war wounded and refugees. Some of the men are alleged to have joined or forced to join the fighting forces of ISIS. The Muslim community, including the Muslim Council, Jamiathul Ulema and other organizations cooperated with the government in identifying the families to provide the necessary support for the intelligence agencies to investigate. Those who have gone to Syria as quoted by Hon. Rajapakshe include women and children." he said.

Ameen said the Minister's statement comes at a very opportune time to certain extremist elements bent on tarnishing the image of the Muslim community for reasons only best known to them. The Thableeq Jamath, Sunnath Jamath, Thowheed Jamath and Jamaithe Islam and several other organizations are all Muslim religious and social service organizations.

"They do not promote any form of violence as implied by Hon. Wijedasa Rajapakshe. Certain parts of his statement are verbatim of the hate speech spewed by the extremist priest Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero."

"The Muslims of Sri Lanka has a long history of peaceful co-existence and have stood with the Sri Lankans at good times and at times of adversity. The entire Muslim community has condemned the un-Islamic comments of the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Thowheed Jamath, Abdul Razick. Twenty-three Muslim Religious and Civil Society organizations headed by the All Ceylon Jamiathul Ulema issued a statement condemning the speech made by SLTJs secretary.

"A little known fact that did not attract any media attention in July 2013 was that the All Ceylon Jamiathul Ulema and Muslim civil society intervened in court in support of Ven. Soranathota Chandrarathana Thero who filed action and pleaded with the magistrate to sentence Abdul Razick and six others with maximum punishment. This is something that we would do irrespective of race or religion as we would expect from our governments in power.

"As alleged by the Hon. Minister, no Muslim international school invites extremists to indoctrinate its children with fundamentalism. Such has been the language of certain countries who created terrorists out of Madrasas in Pakistan to achieve their own ends. We urge Hon. Wijedasa Rajapakshe to provide the evidence and take immediate action against anyone may have violated the laws of the land irrespective of ethnicity or religion.

"The Muslim community is seriously alarmed about the re-emergence of the racist campaign that was carried out by extremist Buddhist monks since the end of the war in 2009. Many youth too have started social media campaigns against the Muslim community. The statements made by the Hon Minster would only help to disturb peace and promote the interests of certain vested interests to destroy our country.

"We urge the Hon Minister and the Government to investigate this and take appropriate action. We urge the government to take immediate steps to halt all form of extremism and restore peace and harmony for all Sri Lankans," the MCSL President said.

Rajitha contradicts Wijeyadasa

While rejecting Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakse's recent statement in Parliament that some 32 Sri Lankan youths had joined the IS, Cabinet spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne today said that the statement was completely incorrect and misleading. Addressing the weekly cabinet press briefing in Parliament, Minister Senaratne said according to the armed forces intelligence reports, only four Muslim youths had joined the IS but they have joined the militant group from abroad. “I have reliable intelligence reports that the information given to Minister Rajapakse was not correct. But unfortunately, the statement made by Minister Rajapakse in Parliament recently has created a confusion and anxiety among the Muslim community in Sri Lanka. Someone has given him misleading information. Not a single Muslim youth joined IS directly from Sri Lanka,” Minister Senaratne said. He said the government must create confidence among the Muslim community as 90% of Muslims are a moderate and passive community and only 10% of Muslim youths are prone to fall into extremist ideologies and added whoever comes to Sri Lanka with the ruse that they are coming here to propagate Muslim, they are screened by the NIB (National Intelligence Bureau). Minister Senaratne said some 30 shocked and distressed Muslim organizations over the remarks made by Minister Rajapaksa representing the entire Muslim community in Sri Lanka had sought a discussion with him to sort out the issue and he would meet them shortly after briefing President Maithripala Sirisena. He charged that the joint opposition was in a dastardly move to create communal disharmony by inciting Muslims and Tamils in the South, East and North with the sinister motive to block Muslim and Tamil votes for the SLFP or the UNP in a future election as they think they could win elections only from Sinhala Buddhist votes which will be their waterloo. Responding to a journalist on the military conspiracy theory suggested by Parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardane, Minister Senaratne said it was the most malicious and vengeful statement made by a Sri Lankan politician ever.

An Open Letter to the Minister of Justice Hon. Wijedasa Rajapakshe

Hon. Wijedasa Rajapakse

Minister of Justice

Colombo

An Open Letter to the Minister of Justice Hon. Wijedasa Rajapakshe

Minister Rajapakse,

The Muslim community takes serious exception to the censorious remarks made by you in Parliament on 17th Nov 2016.  You juxtaposed selected irrelevant issues to implicate and malign several respected Muslim organisations and the Muslim community. Your fearmongering remarks are increasing the degree of tension among all communities thereby jeopardising nascent peace emerging in the country.  The impact of your statement is not confined to the Muslims alone as it affects the whole country at a time when the President and the Prime Minister are forewarning the nation that anti-government saboteurs are scheming to bring Buddhist-Muslim clash as a strategy to bring down the government. Your statement strengthened the hands of the extremist racists of the country and the aftermath ensuing racist demonstrations in Kandy etc unwittingly places you as the initiator of the collapse of the government by sheer coincidence, which I hope not.

You being a responsible Minister and an erudite Presidential Council, it is unbecoming for a person of your calibre to make sweeping generalization of irrelevant stories put together under the cover of parliamentary immunity. You are making statement in the august house of Parliament to the peoples’ representatives. It is their right to know precise facts and figures, dates and places and names so that they can contribute to find solutions to the problems to which you are seeking to address. Your generalised naming of respected legitimate Muslim organisations and with sweeping generalization of Muslim internationals schools alleging extremist indoctrination by foreign scholars, about infighting between different sects and groups and referring to an isolated story of a person marrying a young girl  and that it can be a cause for communal riot and racial disharmony. All these topped with the story of ISIS, alleging that four families consisting of 32 people men women and small children, at a time that the ISIS is at its death throes and the world has come to know who trained, funded, marketed and operated them to destroy Syria to protect Israeli interest. This is public knowledge, a common phenomenon experienced by many countries and created by the geopolitical realities at the hand of their handlers. I also draw your attention regarding the ISIS matter that you are not updated. Way back in 2015 when the ISIS issue cropped up in the media, the Prime Minister convened a meeting with major Muslim organisations to which senior ministers, The Defence Secretary, the three Service Chiefs, the IGP and the Intelligence Officials participated. I participated on behalf of the National Shoora Council amongst others. We settled these issues at the highest levels of consultation, coordination and communication. We give credits to the government, the military and the law enforcements agencies and the intelligence community for their professional handling of this issue and allaying our concerns.

You will realise that in these statements, you failed the august chamber to give precise intelligible facts to inform the peoples’ representatives. Instead your collection of irrelevant, outdated and fabricated facts are of no use to the peoples’ representative but are becoming handy tools to the racist trouble makers in the country hell bent on destabilizing the nation. Do you know how many potential investors to the country your statement and the aftermath would have shooed out resulting in loss to the country. Do you know how your statements are derailing the struggling government’s development initiatives? Do you know how you are making despondency and frustration to set in the country? Do you know how your statements are scuttling reconciliation initiatives of the country? Or is this the prelude to the enactments of Counter Terrorism Act by artificially creating tension and fearmongering in the country as a strategy?

We would like to know what was the rationale behind sensationalizing something past and irrelevant in a fast changing society seeking social harmony, rebuilding, reconciliation and rejuvenating of the economy as priorities of the Yahapalana Government. We fail to understand your logic of why you did chose to make this statement impromptu. We believe that you are not updated about the issues that you talked about with concrete facts, figures and dates. Whoever shared information with you has failed the test of due diligence thereby making you to speak something not in keeping with your stature as a legal luminary if not a Minister. We sympathise with you and shall be prepared to work with you corroborating with facts and figures, inshallah (God willing), for the sake of building Mother Lanka.

Thank you,

Sincerely

Tariq Mahmud President National Shoora Council

SUBJECT: HEALING IN THE QUR’AN

Allah, The Most Exalted, says:

“And We reveal of the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy for Believers( Qur’an 17: 82)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

“There is no disease that Allah has sent down except that He also has sent down its treatment.” (Hadith – Bukhari )

Note: The Quran is not only guidance for humanity but Allah has also made it a spiritual cure and healing for all types of ailments. This includes treatment of all worldly problems, physical and psychological ailments, and spiritual. The Creator has clearly told us that the words of the Quran are a “shifa” (healing) for all and, therefore, when used with real belief in one’s heart, this form of treatment can bring miraculous cu re to all forms of ailments

Islam does not discourage the use of treatments available to us through medical and other sciences. On the contrary, the use of such treatments is encouraged by the teachings of the Noble Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) who sought the treatment of illnesses and diseases for himself and urged his followers to do the same.

SUBJECT: SHAITAAN(SATAN): “Our open enemy!”

Allah, The Most Exalted, says:

“O You who believe! Enter absolutely into peace (Islam). Do not follow in the footsteps of satan. He is an outright enemy to you.” (Quran: 2:208)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

“Shaitaan places his throne upon water; then sends detachments (for creating dissension); one of them comes and says: I did not spare so and so until I sowed the seed of discord between him and his father or between him and his mother or his brothers. Then he (Shaitan) says: you did nothing. They will be made up with one another. Another one comes and says: I did not spare so and so until I sowed the seed of discord between him and his wife. The Shaitan goes near him and says: ‘You have done well. And He then embraces him and says: You are so and so.” (Hadith Muslim)

Note: Shaitaan’s master plan is to distract us from obedience to Allah Ta’ala. Shaitaan’s attacks comes in various forms from leading one disbelief, committing shirk (associating partners to Allah), introducing innovations in Islam and committing sins. Allah the Most Exalted has however granted us various means of protection f rom the evil of Shaitaan in the form of du’as (prayers) of protection and seeking His refuge from Shaitaan. Don’t ever feel despondent on being led astray by Shaitaan as he would hope you would give up and fail. If you have been deceived then repent and return to Allah Ta’ala. The next time he reminds you of your past, remind him of your future!
