  • This could be your last Ramadaan
REMEMBER the beginning of Ramadan last year: the festive supermarkets with their jampacked aisles, the makeshift roadside stalls outside restaurants selling crisp sambusas and subiya, the sounds of Adhan emanating from Masajid... My house overlooked a Maghsalat-Al-Amwaat Al-Khairiyyah (a charitable organization which prepares bodies for burial in the Islamic manner), and as I walked home from the neighborhood supermarket laden with packages of food and other essentials in preparation of the next day’s fast, I caught sight of a family accompanying a bier in a hearse. The women huddled together, sobbing quietly, while the men stood at a distance in somber silence. It struck me: While I was going home to the comfort of my home and the company of my family, this person was being dispatched alone, to answer the stern questioning of the grave....

  • Facebook staff to learn Sinhala insults after Sri Lanka riots
Three months after Sri Lanka was rocked by deadly anti-Muslim riots fuelled by online vitriol, Facebook is training its staff to identify inflammatory content in the country’s local languages. The social network has been seeking penance in Sri Lanka after authorities blocked Facebook in March as incendiary posts by Buddhist hardliners fanned religious violence that left three people dead and reduced hundreds of mosques, homes and businesses to ashes. Until the week-long ban, appeals to Facebook to act against the contagion of hate speech had been met with deafening silence, at a time when the California-based tech giant was reeling from unprecedented global scrutiny over fake news and user privacy. “We did make mistakes and we were slow,” Facebook spokeswoman Amrit Ahuja told AFP in Colombo. The dearth of staff fluent in Sinhala...

  • UN condemns anti-Muslim attacks in Sri Lanka
2018-03-12 11:10:35 4 2109 The UN's political chief on Sunday condemned anti-Muslim violence that has targeted mosques and businesses in Sri Lanka as he wrapped up a three-day visit to Sri Lanka. Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman urged the government to bring the perpetrators of the violence and hate speech to justice. Feltman, who met with Muslim leaders to show solidarity during his visit, "condemned the breakdown in law and order and the attacks against Muslims and their property," a UN statement said. Sri Lanka has been rocked by a week of violent riots by Sinhalese mobs who have attacked 11 mosques and at least 200 Muslim-owned businesses, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency. Three people have been killed and 20 wounded in the anti-Muslim attacks. On Sunday a Muslim-owned...

Back to School By Umme Ammarah

Schools are about to open and you're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that holidays are just about over. Back to School comes with a barrage of projects, homework, sports practice and of course a day filled with pickups and drop offs.

“The roots of education may be bitter, but the fruit is sweet

Back to school time also means adjustments for children and families;  the first day of grade one, new schools, new classrooms, new teachers and for adults sometimes new jobs.

Change is sometimes exciting and sometimes frightening, but this can also be an opportunity to set new goals. It's is a new year, 1435 of the Hijri Calendar and each year goes so fast like a quick turn of a page. This is why planning and setting goals is so important. As Muslims all our plans should be aimed at achieving our final goal which is to please our Creator Allah Ta'ala.

“He who fails to plan, plans to fail!”

Here are a few points to keep in mind when planning for this year.

· Niyyah: Our intention before doing anything is very important. The Messenger of Allah(peace be upon Him) has said "Every deed is judged by its intention."(Hadith-Bukhari) Plan and do lots…but it must be ONLY to please our Allah.

· Dua: Everyone of us needs to ask and pray to Allah Ta’ala daily for all our needs. A very beautiful dua that The Beloved Messenger of Allah(Peace be upon Him) made whenever he left his home " In the name of Allah,I trust in Allah, oh Allah I seek refuge in You from straying or being led astray or against slipping or being caused to slip or doing injustice or injustice being done on me or doing wrong or having wrong done to me." (Hadith-Abu Dawud)

· Make mashwera/shura (mutual consultation): To consult with your family is important as it unites the heart on a common purpose. All activities whether big or small should be discussed. Sit with the family daily at a mutually convenient time and plan our activities. See where we are and where we want to go this year. Check our level of Deen and plan to improve upon it. Discuss our day to day affairs. We may even discuss and allocate turns for household chores, or even who sits where in car, etc…this can save a lot of time and arguments early in the morning. To make Mashwera is a sunnah and will bring great barakah(blessings) in our home. It will also grant us an opportunity to plan our lives Islamically.

· Make attainable goals: Sets goals realistically and intelligently. Set goals that are attainable. Most important Make Deen the priority in our lives. Monitor your progress and place reminders and back your resolutions with planning.

· Family time:Set aside quality time for them. Be interactive. Listen to them and pay attention to them when they call on you. Engage them in Taleem (Educational programs), for the smaller ones also read Islamic stories and even make it a practice to discuss the day's events with them. There is NO SUBSTITUTE for parental guidance and supervision.

Your children need your presence more than your presents

· Homework: Turn off the T.V, BBM, Facebook and other social networks…put away your concerns and concentrate on being a parent. Look through your child's homework diary as your child's teacher uses this as a main connection between you and the school.

“Don't do homework for them, Do it with them!”

· Daily routines: Let your child be involved in the small things like packing lunch, laying out clothes(uniforms) etc this teaches them responsibility. Start bed time routines a week before school starts. Ensure punctuality in Salaah(prayers). Read your duas together in the morning and evening. Make going to and from school educational by reciting duas collectively in the car. In a short time they will memorize the duas of travelling.

· Educational goals: Plan big! Enrol your kids for the best available Islamic Education…enrol your kids for Hifdh (memorisation of the Qur'an). You may have also realised how weak your Islamic knowledge is. Make time to attend some Islamic classes, or sit for Taleem Halqa at the Masjid. Ladies can join the weekly taleem (educational) programs in their area. Consult with your local Islamic Scholars regarding suitable Islamic educational programs.

· Identify your career goals: Choose your curriculum carefully and wisely. Maybe you always talked about making the career switch to a more Halaal source of income or adjusting your work times for salaat with jamaat (congregation). You may need to adjust your times so as to spend some quality time with your family. Whatever your reasons maybe, identify a career that will benefit your family both in this world and the aakhirah(hereafter).

· Wake up every day with a purpose: We wake up often knowing we should be doing something important today, but have failed to plan! Prepare for our higher purpose otherwise our day will become less productive.

· Uniforms and Stationery: Make sure uniforms are purchased timeously and that it conforms to Sharia (Islamic requirements). If your kids encounter any resistance from the educational institution regarding their Islamic attire or other Islamic practices then be diplomatic and discuss and resolve the matter with management respectfully. Also ensure that you obtained a list of stationery required early so that it could be budgeted for and purchased well before hand.

· Lunch boxes, breakfasts and diets: Research shows that breakfast eaters have better concentration and muscle co-ordination. Kids need healthy lunch box snacks that maintain blood glucose levels which help concentration, so keep away from fuzzy drinks, chips and chocolates for lunch. A good idea is to plan a lunch box menu for the week.

· Take account of yourself daily: We need to be alert of our development so that we progress. Therefore we need to daily reflect on our progress or a lack of it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has said" the feet of the son of Adam will not move on the Day of Judgement until he is asked about five things: how he spent his life, how he spent his youth, from where he acquired his wealth and how he spent it, and what he did with his knowledge." So we need to be conscious on how we profitably use every second of our lives.

Remember that a Muslim sets goals that are in harmony with our accountability in the Aakhirah (Hereafter)... so take pen to paper and plan for a better life, seeking Allah Ta’ala's Guidance, Help and Forgiveness. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has encouraged us to make the following du’a "Oh our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the torment of the fire.”

Back to School may be demanding and at times stressful but keep in mind that an investment in knowledge always pays the best “interest”!

Just one "A"!

By Abdur Rahmaan Umar

It had been a long two weeks thought Taheera as she stole a moment to gulp down her now lukewarm tea. Yes, it had been two long weeks of covering books, sharpening pencils and struggling to make up sets of pencil colours from leftovers of last year. Getting the kids back to school had been no easy task and she had heard all the stories about school and about the learner who was adamant about working on the floor because her teacher insisted that they do their math without tables; and of the new teacher who marched into the classroom determined to establish his authority, and after banging his books on the desk demanded, “Will all the idiots in this class please stand up!”

After a painfully long silence young Abdool stood up at the back of the class and the teacher said, “Yes young man! Tell us why you think you are an idiot!”

The young man shifted his toppee(hat) nervously and in a near whisper replied, “I don’t think I am an idiot, Sir. But I felt bad that you were the only one standing”

She had just put away the last of the dishes when she heard her son at the door. Patting down her greying hair and removing her apron she waited for him to come rushing in as he always did.

“Salaams Ma. Howzit!” he shouted as bounded into the kitchen dropping his heavy school bag at the door. “What’s to eat? I’m very starved”

“Wa Alaikum wasalaam. When are you going to learn to say the full salaam. All you young people...”

“Ma, guess what?” he cut her off, “I am going to get seven A’s this year. Seven! Ma”

Taheera smiled broadly and replied, “I think you should get eight A’s”

“But Ma, I am only doing seven subjects.” he said, a quizzical frown creased his forehead. “How can I ever get eight A’s. I think the heat of the kitchen is frying your brain, Ma.”

She paused for a while, set down the plate of steaming rice before him and said, “In fact, I think you should just get one A. Yes, just one A is enough”

Confused, he ignored his food and stared at his mother, “Ma, you not making sense. What good is one A? And in which subject – Maths, Science, English....no, Ma you really not making sense.”

Taheera busied herself with dishing out aromatic curry saying nothing. She moved confidently in the kitchen pleased that she could offer her children a freshly cooked lunch every day. She wiped her hands on the kitchen towel and sat down close to her son.

“You see, my son,” she began in her soft voice, “I don’t want you to get an A in any subject. Not Maths, Science, English or....even accounting.”

Yusuf tilted his head in confusion and began to say something, before he could collect his words, she continued, “The A I really want you to get is Allah. If you have Allah throughout your life then you have everything. But if you have all the qualifications, all the letters of the alphabet behind your name...LLB, BA, BSc, PhD, you name it; but you don’t have Allah then you have lost out. Not only in the Hereafter, but in this world too. Because,” she paused to take a sip of water and waited for her words to sink in before she continued,

“If you have Allah in your troubled times then you have the best of Helpers. And knowing there’s no problem that He can’t solve, you will never give up hope. And if you have Allah in your good times then you will never forget that all the lovely things you have come from Him and you will never be arrogant. And if He is with you in the grave then what darkness can there be? In fact your grave will be full of light!.. And if He is with you on the day of Judgement then who can deny you entry into His Paradise.”< /o:p>

Yusuf shuffled his food around his plate as he stared at his mother with tearful eyes.

“So if you have just this one A you have everything. And Allah will carry you in the difficult times and guide you in the happy times.”

Taheera reached for her son’s hand and held it tightly. He stood up, his tall lanky frame towering over her and bent low to place a gentle kiss on her forehead, whispering, “Ma, you’re a genius.”

Pearls of Wisdom: No.57 “Food for the Soul” SUBJECT: DEEN(ISLAM) IS EASY

Latest

User Rating: / 2
PoorBest

Allah, The Most Exalted, says:

“Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you.” (Quran:2:185)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said;

“Verily this religion is ease; and none make this religion difficult except that it overwhelms them.” (Hadith Bukhari)

Note: Islam is a simple religion and not burdensome. However, that Islam is easy and not ‘difficult’ is not to imply that Muslims will not face 'hardship'. It implies that the practicing of Islam is quite easy and simple.

None should go to extremes in religious matters and forsake the easy approach as it may become too taxing and the possibility that the person may abandon the act in totality. It does not mean that we should not seek to be more perfect in our worship, for that is something praiseworthy. Rather what is discouraged is going to such extremes in doing voluntary acts that over exertion overtakes a person so that eventually he or she  is unable to cope with even the simplest of tasks.

In Deen, whatever has been ordained is always practical and beneficial.

“Islam is really simple, but often due to our ignorance we insist on making it complicated.”

Winning the Race? By Abu Muhammad Yusuf

Winning the Race?

By Abu Muhammad Yusuf

It may be an athletic race, an exam, a business deal, an argument or whatever; our human instinct wants us to be at the top. We all want to win the battle, but in the process are we not losing the war?

In pursuit of our material goals we often lose focus and although we may “achieve, win or succeed”, it could be at a substantial cost to ourselves, families, friends and community.

A few years ago at a Special Athletics Meeting, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 50 meter race. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win.

All, that is, except one boy who stumbled on the tarmac, tumbled over a couple of times and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. They all turned around and went back. Every one of them!

One with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better."

All nine linked arms and walked across the finish line together.

Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing:

What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What truly matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course.

“By helping others achieve their dreams, we will be achieving our own!”

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon) is reported to have said;

“He who is not merciful to people, Allah will not be merciful to him.”(Hadith-Bukhari & Muslim)

In pursuing our ambitions let us not become unmindful of those around us for indeed the road to success is paved by helping and caring for others and if we cannot help or support them, then let us not by our conduct hurt them.

Indeed the bigger picture is NOT about winning the race but about bringing joy and happiness to  those around us whether we win the race or not!

HE VIRTUES MONTH OF ZIL HIJJAH

By E ISLAM TEAM
  • Importance of First 10 Days of Zil Hijjah
  • The Takbeeraat of Tashreeq
  • Fasting on the day of Arafah(9 Zil Hijjah)
  • Qurbani / Udhiyya

IMPORTANCE OF FIRST TEN DAYS OF ZIL-HIJJAH

The first ten days of Zul Hijjah are among the most magnificent days in Islamic calendar. The Messenger of Allah, Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: "There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days." (Hadith -Bukhari)

Almighty Allah Ta'ala says, (By the dawn; by the ten nights) (Quran-Al-Fajr 89: 1-2). Ibn `Abbas, ibn az-Zubayr, Mujahid and others of the earlier and later generations are of the opinion that this refers to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. Ibn Kathir said: "This is the correct opinion." (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 8/413)

The Messenger of Allah, Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, has said, "One fast during these days is equal to the fasting of one complete year, and the worship of one night during this period is equal to the worship of "Lailatul-Qadr".(Hadith-Tirmizi)

Every Muslim should avail oneself of this wonderful opportunity by performing as much Ibadah (acts of worship) as he or she can during this period.

THE TAKBEERAAT OF TASHREEQ

It is Wajib (incumbent) for every adult Muslim male to recite the Takbeeraat of Tashreeq after every Fardh Salaat-performed with Jamaat or individually from the Fajr of the 9th of Zul-Hijjah to the Asr of the 13th of Zul Hijjah. The Takbeeraat should be recited once only.

The words of the Takbeeraat of Tashreeq are as follows:

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ وَاَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ

Transliteration: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar laa ilaha illallahu wallahu akbar. Allahu Akbar walillaahil hamd.

Translation: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no deity besides Allah and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest and all praises belong to Him Alone.”

NB. Men should recite this Takbeer audibly whilst females should do so softly.
FASTING ON THE DAY OF ARAFAH (9 ZIL HIJJAH)

It was reported from Abu Qutaadah that the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) was asked aboutfasting on the Day of 'Arafah ( 9 Zil Hijjah). He said, "It atones for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year." (Hadith-Muslim)

QURBANI / UDHIYYA

Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (R.A.) reports that the Companions of Rasulullah (Sallalaho alihe wassallam) asked him:

" Oh Prohpet of Allah (pbuh), what is this sacrifice?" He said: "It is the way of your forefather Ibrahim(AS) ." They asked:"What (reward) is for us therein?" He replied: "There is a reward for every hair (i.e. the reward for meat and useful parts of the animal's body will be very lofty in merit, but there will also be a great reward for the parts which are useless and thrown away such as the hair)." They asked: "For the wool, Ya Rasulullah?" He replied: "There is one reward for every strand of wool." (Hadith:Ahmed, Ibn Majah)

Udhiya (Qurbani)

Latest

User Rating: / 1
PoorBest

Udhiya (Qurbani)

What is Udhiya?

‘Udhiya’ is an Arabic word meaning "blood sacrifice", and ‘Qurbani’ is an Urdu and Persian word derived from the Arabic word "Qurban" which literally means an act performed to seek Allah Ta’ala’s pleasure. It is technically used for the sacrifice of an animal slaughtered for the sake of Allah Ta’ala.

The sacrifice of an animal has always been a recognised form of worship in many religions, but in the ‘Shariah’ (Islamic sacred law) of The Last and Final Messenger of Allah Ta’ala (Peace be upon him) the sacrifice of an animal has been recognised as a form of ibadah (worship) during the three days of the month Zul Hijjah, namely the 10th, 11th, and 12th.

This is to commemorate the unparalleled sacrifice offered by the Prophet Sayyidna Ibrahim, Alayhi Salam, when he, in pursuance to a command of Allah Ta’ala conveyed to him in a dream, prepared himself to slaughter his beloved son, Sayyidna Isma'il, Alayhi Salam, and actually intended to do so, but Allah Ta’ala the Almighty, after testing his submission, sent down a sheep and saved his son from the logical fate of slaughter. It is from that incident that the sacrifice of an animal became an obligatory duty to be performed by every Muslim who has the means to do it.

On who is it obligatory?

Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) on every Muslim who is

  • Of sound mind - mature (has reached the age of puberty),
  • Muqeem (i.e. he is not a traveller in terms of Sharia)
  • Possesses the amount of 612,36 grams of silver or wealth equivalent to that value which is in excess of one's basic needs and debts on any of the three days of Qurbani. It is not necessary that this amount be in one's possession for a complete lunar year. (please do consult your local Islamic Scholars for more details and exact value in your local currency)

What the Quran and Hadith says:

Allah Ta’ala Ta'ala, The Most Wise says:

"It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allâh, it is your piety that reaches Him. Indeed He has subjected them (animals) to you so that you may glorify Allah for guiding you, and give glad tidings to those who excel in good." (Quran-22:37)

The Noble Messenger of Allah Ta’ala(Peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

"For every hair that is on the sacrificial animal, one reward is recorded for the person making the Qurbâni."

"There is nothing dearer to Allâh during the days of Qurbâni than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Qiyamah with its horns, hair and hooves (to be weighed inreward). The sacrifice is accepted by Allâh before the blood reaches the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart." (Hadith-Ibn Majah).

"Whoever has the capacity to sacrifice and does not do so, should not come to the place where the Eid prayer is offered." (Hadith-Ibn Majah).

Therefore not ignore this important part of Deen if you do have the means. There are many more details that relate to Qurbani which we have not covered in this brief article.

True Richness! By Abu Muhammad Yusuf

Truly, the richest person is not the one with most materials possessions nor is the poorest person one in abject poverty. True wealth lies in contentment. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said:

“Richness is not the abundance of wealth; rather, it is self-contentment.”

Discontentment makes rich people poor while contentment makes poor people rich. There was a crow which lived in the forest and was absolutely satisfied in life. But one day he saw a swan. “This swan is so white,” he thought, “and I am so black. This swan must be the happiest bird in the world.”

He expressed his thoughts to the swan. “Actually,” the swan replied, “I was feeling that I was the happiest bird around until I saw a parrot, which has two colours. I now think the parrot is the happiest bird in creation.” The crow then approached the parrot. The parrot explained, “I lived a very happy life until I saw a peacock. I have only two colours, but the peacock has multiple colours.”

The crow then visited a peacock in the zoo and saw that hundreds of people had gathered to see him. After the people had left, the crow approached the peacock. “Dear peacock,” the crow said, “you are so beautiful. Every day thousands of people come to see you. When people see me, they immediately shoo me away. I think you are the happiest bird on the planet.”

The peacock replied, “I always thought that I was the most beautiful and happy bird on the planet. But because of my beauty, I am entrapped in this zoo. I have examined the zoo very carefully, and I have realized that the crow is the only bird not kept in a cage. So for past few days I have been thinking that if I were a crow, I could happily roam everywhere.”

That’s our problem too. We make unnecessary comparison with others and become sad. We don’t value what Allah Ta’ala has given us.  This all leads to the vicious cycle of unhappiness.  Learn to be happy in what you have instead of looking at what you don’t have.

There will always be someone who will have more or less than you have.  A person who is satisfied with what he or she has, is indeed the happiest person in the world and will enjoy tranquility, satisfaction and peace of mind as he or she does not long for what others have or desire what he or she does not possess.  The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Do not incline to the worldly life and Allah will love you. Have no desire for what people possess, and people will love you.”

In the present world a person’s greatest good fortune lies in remaining a thankful servant of Allah Ta’ala.  The person who possesses this inner contentment is really a thankful servant.

Contentment gives a person the blessing of a heart at peace. Those who are not content are eventually consumed by greed and when individuals succumb to greed, they cannot remain content, whatever the circumstances. They always keep complaining about one thing or another.

Contentment grants mental peace, while greed produces mental confusion and disturbance. Contentment makes one love others while greed makes one hate others. Contentment is a means to spiritual upliftment while greed leads to spiritual degeneration.

A feeling of contentment enables a person to rise above trivialities and live in the higher realities. It often appears that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence but remember…

“True wealth lies in a contented heart!”

Pearls of Wisdom: No.55 “Food for the Soul” SUBJECT: DO NOT DESPAIR IN THE MERCY OF ALLAH

Latest

Allah, The Most Exalted, says:

“O my servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Verily, Allah forgives all sins, for he is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” (Qur’an 39:53)

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is reported to have said;

"Indeed, before Allah created the creation, He decreed for Himself, 'Indeed My Mercy prevails over My Anger.” (Hadith Bukhari and Muslim)

Note: No matter how big the sin or sins that you have committed, no matter what your past has been like, if you come back to Him with one sincere, sincere Tauba(Repentance), coming from the heart, He will indeed forgive you. E very pious person has a past and every sinner has a future!

Allah created mercy in one hundred parts and sent down to earth only one part. Because of this one part, there is mutual love amongst creation, so much so that an animal will lift up its hoof from its young one, fearing that it might harm it. Allah has reserved the remaining ninety-nine parts of this mercy to favor His believing servants on the Day of Judgment. (Hadith-Bukhari and Muslim)

Allah's love is much greater than a mother's love for her child. When you find yourself lost in the whirlpool of your sins, when you can't see yourself coming out of this mess, when all you see is darkness around you, remember His doors are open for you. He loves you. If you crawl to Him, He will walk to you. If you walk to Him, He will run to you!

“Don’t despair, for as the sun fades the stars begin to shine! When it appears that that all have left remember Allah Ta’ala is AWLAYS there and will  NEVER leave you ALONE!”

Problems, Problems, Problems… By Sister S Bemath

Latest

PROBLEMS!!!...How we hate them! The time and energy we waste, stewing over problems instead of tackling them cheerfully and constructively, recognising them as the growth points of life and progress. Life can expose us to a series of problems. Problems evoke in us a great deal of emotional pain, such as sorrow, fear, anger, anxiety, sadness etc. These are uncomfortable emotions. Do we want to moan about them or solve them? Discipline is the basic set of tools we require to solve life's problems... it is in this whole process of meeting and solving problems that life has its meaning.

Problems are the cutting edge that distinguishes success and failure. Problems are what cause us to grow mentally and spiritually. Without growth, we're doomed to stay as we have always been. Wise people learn not to dread problems, but to welcome, expect and tackle problems. Fearing the pain involved causes most to go to any lengths to avoid their problems and the suffering, attempting to escape from or even at times ignoring them by building out the most elaborate fantasies in which to live, sometimes to the total exclusion of reality. A little pain, perhaps, in facing a problem... a little patience, courage, thought and effort to try and solve it – they're preferable to burying it and risk becoming a neurotic cripple who may need psychiatric treatment. In ignoring the problem, we stop growth which we learn from the problems that life brings. Therefore, we avoid real life for the replaced fantasy. When we stop the growth, we also stop the healing we could have attaine d if we faced our problems and pain with proper responses.

As Muslims, we are in direct communication with the Almighty ALLAH. No matter how bad you perceive your situation and your lack of strength is, don't give up! Because, where your strength ends, the grace of ALLAH begins. So, cry your heart to none but ALLAH. Only ALLAH TA'ALA can and will heal you in all possible ways! HE is the only One Who not only Hears and Knows all, but Who can change our situation and give us the patience to deal with our difficulties. Allah, The Most Wise, says:

“Remember Me, and I shall remember you; be grateful to Me, and deny Me not.” (Qur'aan 2:152)

Life is difficult, and the world is full of troubles, but the sun still shines, and ALLAH'S blessings are everywhere in our lives. Many have complained that “life isn’t fair.” Life consists of examination papers given by Almighty ALLAH to see how much we have learnt in HIS subject called “LIFE”. Sometimes ALLAH tests us so that we can see the rainbow after a stormy rain. If we can’t see the rainbow in this world, then In'Sha'ALLAH we can in the Hereafter. Just be strong in your heart and mind! Furnish it with faith, love, trust, and sincerity for the sake of ALLAH. Make your imagination embroidered with HIS love and light. In'Sha'ALLAH tranquility and contentment will penetrate into our soul. That is when our imagination triumphs over intelligence. Never give up on ALLAH’S MERCY. Doing so is actually tantamount to disbelief.

“Truly no one despairs of ALLAH'S soothing Mercy except those who have no faith.”(Qur'aan 12:87)

Be it the silence in your life right now or the rumble of the forthcoming storm... you have ALLAH TA'ALA to guide you through! HE sends you hope in the most desperate moments. Don't forget;the heaviest rain comes out of the darkest clouds. Have faith that it shall pass and a sunshine of Sabr (patience) will shine down on you. So, often we associate problems with “the unwanted, difficulty and stress.” We should rather associate them with “lessons, opportunity and growth.”Problems are like washing machines, they twist us, spin us and knock us around, but in the end we come out cleaner, brighter and better than before.

Avoiding problems is our attempt to avoid true life's learning opportunities. True emotional and spiritual health comes from acknowledging that life is full of problems. And with this truth, we discover the tools to dealing with these problems. The tools we must discover are found inside discipline. When we develop discipline within every area of our life, we also develop the tools we shall need to successfully confront and overcome problems Insha Allah.

Here are few guidelines for problem solving:

• Develop the habit of viewing problems optimistically and tackling them creatively. With patience, prayer and supplication, most problems can be overcome. Prayer is the key that unlocks all doors.

• Have faith in your ability to solve problems, often while you sleep. Write down what's worrying you before you go to bed, then trust Allah Ta’ala to work on the problem while you sleep. Often an answer comes like a flash in the morning. “Sleep on a problem” is sound common-sense which has worked throughout the ages.

• Recognise which problems need to be lived through and which to be worked through. Recognise also that there are no definite answers to every problem and with the passage of time some will evaporate, while others need to be tackled wisely.

• Don't suppose that, if you change your circumstances, problems will vanish. Many people think that if this and if that, they would be happy – but every situation has its problems. The secret is to change your attitude towards them.

• Place your forehead on the ground and mention ALLAH'S Praises, so that you can obtain true freedom. Let your tears flow in front of HIM and read the supplication of Prophet Yaqoob (Alaihis Salaam), “I only complain of my suffering and grief to ALLAH...” (Qur'aan 12:86)

• Write down several possible solutions. If you can't think of any, remember ALLAH, call out HIS name, and ask HIM for help. HE will make a way out when there seems to be no way!!!

“…And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish his purpose…” (Quran 65: 2-3)

Accept your problems. View them positively, creatively and courageously. And, yes, be grateful for them – for, in learning to cope, you'll grow in stature and wisdom. Take the time out every day to thank ALLAH for the blessings in your life – not only will you be overwhelmed because you will never be able to enumerate them, but you will truly recognise ALLAH'S presence in your life.

Stay strong and firm because things will get better Insha Allah, it might be stormy now, but it can't rain forever.
