This article should be read contextually with all previous parts. . It is not my objective to make any derogatory criticism of any community or any religion. An attempt has been made here to illustrate how Singhalese people have been sympathetic and companionate towards all other religious groups in the past. Though Portuguese and Hindu invaders from South India try to destroy cultural heritage of Singhalese Buddhist people during the colonial and pre-colonial periods, Singhalese kings offered unconditional supports and help for all other religious groups such as Christian, Hindi and Muslims people. I shall try to illustrate this point with historical evidence to show what BBS doing today is contrary to their cultural and religious history and teachings.

In this part of the series we shall examine the life of Prophet Muhammad PBUP before he attained his prophethood. This should shed some light on the personal traits and personalities of our beloved prophet that distinguish him from all other people. Historical accounts tell us that every minute aspects of our beloved prophet were meticulously recorded and preserved by his companions. According to some historians the biography of the Prophet Muhammad was recorded by two methods: It was verbally recoded and transmitted in accordance with the oral traditions of transmitting information in Arabic societies. Secondly the biography of prophet was documented in written format in the books of Sira of the prophet by succeeding generations. Most historians and Islamic scholars argue that Prophet Muhammad is a special human being among humanity. Some argue that since his birth Prophet Muhammad was brought up in divine sight and care.

There is no doubt that Muslims have been loyal citizens of Srilanka throughout Srilankan history. They fought with Sinhalese to protect the Island from the onslaught of colonial powers. Dewaraja notes that “when the Portuguese first appeared off the shoes of Srilanka, the Muslims warned the kings, sangha, nobles and the people of the potential threat to the country’s sovereignty. When the Portuguese tried to gain a foothold in Colombo, the Muslims provided firearms, fought side by side with the Sinhalese and even used their influences with South Indian powers to get military assistance to Sinhalese rulers. Through the intervention of the Muslims, the Zamorin of Calicut sent three distinguished Moors of Cochin with forces to help Mayadunne”. P. 50). This illustrates Muslim people’s loyalty to this nation and they defended this land with their lives against any foreign invasions. Do we really need to respond to the provocations and hated campaigns of this tiny group of extremists in SriLanka? Much has been said and written about them in various news papers and TV broadcasting. It has been highlighted in recent media presentation and press release. Reading through what has been said and written about them I could notice that there are two schools of thought in our response to the provocations and activities of this group. One school of thought argues that BBS should be left on its own and we should not respond to their provocation and activities. It will meet its doom day naturally.

An attempt has been made here to illustrate the biographical account of the Prophet Muhammad a precise and succinct way so that our Non-Muslim readers could enhance their knowledge about the prophet Muhammad without any bias or prejudice

In this series I shall try to introduce the biography of the prophet Muhammad to our Non-Muslim readership. Most of the Non-Muslim people have got wrong perceptions about the life and accomplishment of the prophet Muhammad.   In some cases we can not blame them all for this misperception. This is because they have come to know the biographical account of the prophet Muhammad through the writing of some bias writers toward Islam and Muslims.  Today, misperceptions about Islam and its prophet are wide spread in all formats: Since Prophet Muhammad received his prophethood from Almighty Allah in the cave Hira the antagonism and accusation toward his message began. It is not a new social phenomenon that Islam and Muslims encounter problems and challenges when Muslims reach out with the message of Islam to any Non- Muslim community today, yet, it is importance to know how to face some of these challenges and problems and how to repulse some of these accusations.

Historical origins of Srilankan Muslims:

It is pathetic that some extremist Buddhist people are protesting against Muslims in Srilanka today for no reason. Muslim people have been accused of many social issues. They have done nothing wrong in Srilankan history and they have been accusing of spreading fundamentalism in Sirlanka . They have been accused of supporting al-Qaida. They have been accused of supporting Taliban. They have been accusing of building more mosques in Srilanka. They have been accused of marrying Singhalese girls. They have been accused of increasing their population. They have been accused of accumulating money by selling Halal food.  They have been accused of forcing Buddhist people to eat halal food. They have been accused of being disloyal to Srilanka. This list of accusations could go on countless. But the entire Muslim community is innocent from all these allegations and accusations. There may have been some misunderstanding in some of these issues and yet, such misunderstanding should be clarified: We all need some clarity of thought on these issues: some of these issues are exaggerated and inflated very much by the some extreme people.

Patriotism, allegiance and loyalty of Srilankan Muslims to Mother Lanka: Part: 1. - by Dr Rifai Naleemi. UK

It is imperative to examine and gauge the true nature of Muslims’ patriotism to mother lanka. Particularly, this is a timely needed subject in the context of prevailing current debates about Muslim people in Srilanka. Muslim population in Srilanka according to the recent census constitutes 9. 2%. Do they really have loyalty and allegiance to this land? Do they love this land as the majority people of the land do? Or do they have loyalty to another land in the world map? Do they belong to Saudi or Pakistan or do they belong to somewhere else.

A strange mystery   has been created in the mind of some people that minority people do not belong to this Island. It has been debated by some people in utter an arrogant to say that this country belongs only to the majority people alone.

Attacks and sinister criticism against Islam and Muslims have dramatically increased in the last few decades.  Since Salman Rushdie published his book satanic verses we have seen many provocative activities against Muslims throughout the world and particularly in European countries.   Sometimes, some anti-Muslim elements openly come out and attack Islamic places, mosques, and physically attack Muslim brothers and sisters. Many incidents of such attacks have been have been reported in many parts of European countries and  these provocative acts are expressed through books, news papers, magazines, cartoons and films to gauge emotional  pulses of Muslim people throughout the world.  Time to time provocative actions are taken by anti-Islamic forces to create communal tension between Muslim and Non-Muslim communities in Europe and more importantly to portray Muslims as violent and extremist people.

More than one billion Muslim people are fasting this month from dawn to dusk all over the globe. This is indeed a blessed month and Muslim people are happy to welcome this holy month. Muslim devotees are dedicating their time and energies in devotion, supplication and religious rituals during this holy month.  More times are spent in the mosques, more people are reading the holy Quran, and more charities are exchanged between people. Fasting is one of five pillars of Islam.  It is beyond the scope of this article to cover all aspects of this pillar and yet I will try my best to give some basic points about fasting and most of time our Non-Muslim brothers ask. Why do Muslim fast and how do they starve from dawn to dusk and how do they go without water or drinks whole day  and now it is nearly 17 hours in western countries. Some people see it as a daunting task. But believe me it is not a difficult task and even 8 years old children could do it. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of beautiful aspects of Islam that unites all Muslims all over the world and gives practical dimensions to the universal brotherhood of Muslim people.

I have given here a precise summary of IERA’s research findings concerning perceptions of Islam, Muslims and how Islam is presented to Non-Muslim in England. Though this a sample survey with very limited numbers of respondents it tells lots about Non-Muslim perceptions of Islam and Muslim in general. This survey is carried out by Non-Muslim Company on behalf this Islamic education and Research Academy.  Finding of this survey were released on 23/07/2010 at London Muslim Centre.

This research finding is an eye opener not only Muslim minority in UK but also for the entire Muslim people all over the world particularly for Muslim minorities. These findings should encourage Muslims people to review and re-evaluate their attitudes and methodologies in reaching out to Non-Muslim people.
